I just stumbled upon an article (see below) on Yahoo that Gary Gygax (co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons) passed away today. As Gary Gygax is one of the fathers of role-playing, I thought it would be of interest to Magic fans.
Text: " MILWAUKEE - Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.

He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.
Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.
Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.
"It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from over the years about how he helped them become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them," Gygax said. "He really enjoyed that."
Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's still growing in popularity.
Funeral arrangements are pending. Besides his wife, Gygax is survived by six children."
Very sad to hear. My father was one of those very first players back in 1974 with the original Chain Mail game. I even have all his old, tabbed, marked-up 1st edition D&D books. I think he still has his original collection of hand-painted, lead figurines, too. It's how I got into gaming
RIP Gary Gygax, you will be missed.

Yes, rest in peace, Gary Gygax. Dungeons and Dragons was groundbreaking in many ways, and certainly paved the way for a lot of different games that we all enjoy today. You will be missed.
This is awful. D&D's a great game, and no doubt influenced countless other games, including Magic. I used to play D&D back when I was in high school when Advanced 2nd edition was the current form, and I played all the way up until 3rd. Maybe I'll pick it up again. Hopefully Gary's having fun in the afterlife flogging hobbits.

I think it's funny how Indestructible Aura is neither indestructible nor an Aura.
Thank you Gary Gygax for developing a game that has made me many friends over the years. I am saddened by this news, but I will always be thankful for the hours upon hours of fun and laughter going into the wee hours of the morning chucking dice on my kitchen table with my friends and consuming pizza and Dew. My D&D Saturdays are something I always look forward to. So thanks to you again Gary Gygax, I will always be thankful. RIP.

Thank you for everything. You invented the game that changed how games were played, brought fantasy out into the limelight, and fueled the imaginations of countless people. Without D&D how much fantasy literature and art would be missing? More important to me personally, D&D gave me a social environment where I could thrive and an imaginary haven during my adolescence and beyond. Thanks. You will be missed.
Gary Gygax truly inspired many, many people. Not only to pursue their own dreams of bringing something innovative to the gaming table which this man helped create, but also inspired them in hundreds of other ways with their own lives.
This man was a dreamer and a creator. D&D gave birth to so much, and is still a well-liked thing to this day.
Gary Gygax and his game have been a cultural force whose implications continue to shape us.
I could only pray for half such a wonderful legacy as this man leaves behind.
Rest in Peace
Seriously though, He was easily one of the most influential game designers...ever. He helped shape an entire generation of kids, and the effects of his work will be felt for years to come. Rest in peace, Mr. Gygax; you have changed the world.
Alcoholism is a disease, but it's the only one you can get yelled at for having. "God**** it Otto, you are an alcoholic." "God**** it Otto, you have Lupus" ... one of those two doesn't sound right.
Yes, this is sad, sad news. I still remember when I first started playing D&D. Does anyone else remember playing "Keep on the Border Lands" from the Basic set (back in the early '80s)? Here's a link to the module's cover. From those days, I then went on to play the Expert set and then the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons games. Then back in the '90s, Magic came out and I switch from playing D&D to Magic and have been playing Magic ever since. It's very sad to see that Garg Gygax has passed on. I'm just happy to have had the chance to see him in person at a GenCon back around 2000. Rest in peace Gray!
To Mr. Gygax,
You created a way for people to come together in true comraderie and friendship. Not only did you inspire a generation or 2 but you inspired the creation of many if not all of the fantasy games that people play today.
I will remember sitting around a table 1 night and my party of adventurers got their hands on a collection of a deck of many things. For the next few hours we had a blast drawing cards. Needless to say we came out not who we went in as. Good times.
Thank you for a wonderful memory and know that somewhere someone is rolling up a character in the hopes of saving the world. Thank You Mr. Gygax. R.I.P.

Truly R.I.P Gary Gygax. I shudder to think what the world would have been like without your contributions. While I never personally was greatly involved in DnD, I respect the phenomenal effect it has had on the modern world, especially in the fantasy genre.
