Interested in writing articles for MTGSalvation? We're always looking for more authors, and especially right now.
To write for MTG Salvation, you need to send a PM to Binary, Dr. Tom, or me which includes:
* A sample of your writing (this may be either part of an article you've already started or something else entirely, even schoolwork is okay).
* An idea of what your first article might be (OPTIONAL).
Submit a request to join the Writer's Forum.
We are looking for authors who can write about Magic. We do not accept articles about VS, Yugioh, etc. However, as long as it's about Magic, pretty much any topic is acceptable. We simply ask that your article be informative (what will the reader learn from you?), well-defined (don't write "An Overview of the Metagame of Every Format Ever"), and generally correct (for Pete's sake don't write a tournament strategy article without a good amount of testing data to back it up).
Please join us! We're looking forward to working with you.
I have a few ideas on Magic articles I could write.
But english is not my first language and I still make some spelling mistakes. Would it be a problem?

YOU ARE SURPRISED BY A MANTICORE! IT QUICKLY SHREDS YOUR FLESH AND DEVOURS YOU!
I have a few ideas on Magic articles I could write.
But english is not my first language and I still make some spelling mistakes. Would it be a problem?
Not at all, we have three editors that make sure the English is flawless. Plus, there's a writing guide in the Writer's Forum that'll help.
I've been looking for some editing work for a while now. I'd be more than happy to edit anyone's articles if he or she needs a little help. Or is there already someone filling this "position"?
Let me know. Editing is something I truly enjoy doing. jsa32@cornell.edu
Edit: Feuerdrache answered that one, I suppose. I'm still interested, though! Contact me if you need another editor!

We have several writers for whom English is not the first language. We have several "style" documents in the Writer's Forum you should read if you're given access... they will help you get your article in good enough shape that it won't be too annoying for us to edit it.
@bismarck:
We are not currently looking to expand the editorial staff, but thank you for your offer.

The editorial staff could use some expanding. There are numerous spelling, grammatical and syntax errors in almost every article posted here. It's not as bad as Brainburst, but it's still there.
I must concur with Deathgyunos, we could use a few more editors, if only to spread the work a bit more. I'm not saying to bring someone in as full editor status (with the ability to vote for/against publication), but someone who could at least fix up the grammar and syntax for the rest of ya'll.

I'd definitely be up for this. No official title necessary.
"Hello! I've come to serenade you. I can't play guitar. I can't play this accordion either, but I thought it'd be less obvious."
Dylan Moran, Black Books
I'm always debating whether to write or not. I definitely enjoy it, but at the moment I'm kinda out of spare time. If I'ld write someting it would be about rogue decking, which for me (with my low amount of spare time) implies that I haven't tested my decks extensively. Is that a problem?
haha! Don't expect to get paid, we'd do this for the love of the game and the Magic-playing community, right? Right?! Yeah, thought so... will come up with something about Dissension release here, but if ever you need more willing (re: as cheap as free) editors, sign me up!
It's not "haha" - I think this is a point worth addressing properly.
Indeed, unless I'm much mistaken "PolarBearGod" is probably none other than Richie Proffitt, featured writer at StarCity. Anyone who's written for StarCity of Brainburst will naturally assume there's some sort of payment.
So - I'll attempt a slightly longer answer to the question.
No, there is no reimbursement of any kind. MTGSalvation is a fan community, not a business and one of its core aims is to keep the site free for all users. All the site's admins and moderators are volunteers and none of them are paid either despite putting in innumerable hours of work.
One might reasonably ask "Why write for a site that isn't going to pay me ?". The answer, for me, is because when I write it is primarily to share ideas with fellow fans of the game. Magic writing started on a UseNet group - nobody paid the people there, but there was no shortage of contributors. (Besides, there are far better ways to make money than to write for a Magic site whichever site you might write for.)

So your suggestion is to write for not even the chance at compensation, with the rationalisation of 'Well, other people, at a time in the past, didn't get compensated'? That's a fine perspective for an individual to have, but you might want to focus, insitead, on the 'better' aspects of writing for this site.
The most significant things writing for MTGS will give you is connections - there's an associated store (Rancoredelf.com) that might well offer discounts to writers, - and exposure. If you want to step up to writing professionally on this subject, you should start by writing for free. Bennie Smith, Mike Flores, and Jamie Wakefield, all of whom command money for their articles all started by writing for free in the Dojo.

@Talen Lee: I think you missed the two big points in Bateleur's comment.
So your suggestion is to write for not even the chance at compensation, with the rationalisation of 'Well, other people, at a time in the past, didn't get compensated'?
Not at all. The "rationalisation" (did you mean "rationale" ?) is that writing is as much a part of the Magic hobby as playing the game, collecting the cards and all the rest.
When you're hanging out with your friends you don't say "Hey, funny thing happened in this game yesterday. I was playing in an RRG draft on MtGO and... OK, 10c each to hear the rest of the story. Any takers ?".
When you turn up to your local gamestore you don't sit down, pull out your deck and say "Hey, anyone for Extended 2HG ? $1 entry fee each to play with moi !".
But somehow with writing that's different ?
Some people seem to think so. For those that don't, MTGSalvation is the place to be.
Not that I'm in the running for this, of course.
I like the "of course", that's classy. I tell you what you ought to do - get one of those CafePress stores and sell t-shirts and baseball caps and stuff. Seriously, I'd buy one ! A picture of you looking all stern and potent, with a little caption saying "Talen Lee - Featured Writer".

Uh, well, no, it's just that SCG have a public policy saying you should submit to them and not others. I kinda don't like biting the hand that feeds me.
I say again - there are good reasons to write for the site so even if one disagrees with your individual stance. Like, as I said - experience and exposure. Still, is it really worth bickering about this detail of what I said, given that I weighed in on support of the idea of writing for this site?
I have to say, though, I'm not so sure the idea of 'Forum Posts, But Longer' is a great approach to use to lure in new writers. As you may notice, forum posts are ver' different from proper articles.
In regards to compensation, no, there's no direct compensation. One author a month wins a $30 gift certificate to rancoredelf.com, but it's certainly not a heavy-paying gig. Personally, I do what I do because I like it. Magic is not a job and I don't want it to be.

Not sure where exactly we're using this approach, unless you're talking about the Usenet reference.
The winner of Article of the Month receives $30 in credit at rancored_elf's store.
Other than that gracious donation, we do not offer compensation for writers. We don't charge for subscriptions and the relatively small number of banner ads on the site probably aren't even enough to cover server costs, so there simply isn't enough income to pay every person who writes an article.

I feel horrible now. Look at this turmoil I've caused. I happened to ask about compensation, as my forte for writing is constructed and namely T2, although I'm capable of writing about extended quite easily. Mr. Flores and a few other recently acquired pro's over at SCG take up alot of the discussion on T2. I could write a series of tournament reports there, as I play in roughly 2 to 4 Magic events a week, but I don't think tournament reports are too well received. Unless of course you've won/t8'd a GP or Tour, then some attention is paid.
Let me know if I'm wrong Talen, but I believe we can submit elsewhere, as long as it's not the same column, content, or subject? I remember for a brief time there Chad was writing for BB and SCG and had a stint, I believe, on MTG.com too. Oh well.
I'm not a long time member of Salvation nor was I one at News either. For the most part I checked in for spoilers, like most. One day, I decided to look around and found some places that intrested me. Now I visit just about six or seven times a day. I would be intrested in every once in a blue moon contributing a piece to a site that I don't think has yet been flooded by pro writers (which isn't a bad thing mind you). If that's okay with you ladies and gents, then it's fine by me. No compensation required and I apologize for causing all of this.
Hopefully with my health improving a bit with the warmer weather, I can get the "gumption" to write more. I know I'm LONG overdue at SCG.
