Yes we all know that random dsiccard has it's bonuses, but it's not as powerful as we all think. Theres always the chance we can pull that chump card that they dont mind losing and its all the same as them just chuking a card from their hand. Also in this enviroment with all the flyers we see it still wont be that powerful. A 2/2 for 3 flyer can VERY EASILY be dealt with, so the chance that wizards wont reprint Hyppie cause itll be overpowered is absurd. Random discard is good, if it stays on the table long enpough to work forr a turn or 2.
And as for the artwork looking like abyssal specter, the specters ALL look the same, when I first saw the Hyppie I was surprised that it wasn't riding something, so the fact that it had its very old and somewwhat outdated and decrepit art redne is not unlikely in the least. And why exactly would they rename the artwork to Hyppie if it wasnt that most famous specter? Its not like its for a playtest name, and I doubt (kinda) that they are going to be that deceptive by naming an artwork one thing then renameing it another in the set. or they may just be that mean. Either way thats a card I might just collect because of the badassness of the picture. We should see more black cards done in this style I think.
Rejoice people either way we get a good card or a good picture!

I really do wish WoTC would allow players to play earlier versions of reprinted cards. Because it would be bad as hell to play with UE Hypnotic Specters!

Uhm.. if the specter is reprinted it would be fully legal to use any version of the hyppie thats ever printed

Let's understand that Skullscorch is not anywhere near a Hymn to Tourach. That said, the random discard effects seem to be in red these days. Black doesn not get them at all anymore. Wizards can break their own rules if they want, but Rosewater just talked about this one. The man would know if Hyppie was returning. Would he really want go to all the trouble of explaining why random discard (especially in black) was not going to be pursued if they were about to reprint the most broken random discard creature ever? He would look so foolish. I have to trust that he would not make such an error.

Wow, do you not even now MaRo's personality? He likes to tell us things that will never happen again, then he puts them in a set. He's goofy like that. Also, to people like you saying what's right for what color, THEY ARE R&D! THEY CHOOSE WHAT'S RIGHT FOR EACH COLOR! They can change anything around, for any reason that they want to.
1. Random discard effect on red is always self discard so that doesnt count.
2. He would know if hyppie was returning yes but wizards love to do things like that.. explaing why the shouldnt do something and then doing it.. a good example is the article where he talks about how they will never print a card that produces more mana then it costs. Along comes chrome mox only months after the article.
3. Hyppie is NOT broken. It is good yes but without dark ritual its far from broken

This thread is too long for me to actually...you know...read. So has it actually been confirmed or are we still in "omfg teh pichur sez hippy so it r teh truth!1" mode?
For the record, I doubt it will be reprinted anytime soon unless they do some sort of promotional thing.
Pros:
1. We know the art is on 9th edition booster boxes (meaning its not promotional art)
2. The art was named hypnotic_specter.jpg on greg staples website.
3. When we started discussing it he removed the links to the hyppie picture, the serra angel picture (a confirmed 9th art piece) and a treeman picture from the site. We are guessing that wotc found it we found the name on his site and didnt like that. Also that implied that the treeman was 9th art and we later found out that it actually was 9th art(from background on a pic from invitationals).
cons: Its random discard and wotc said they didnt like random discard (but then again they love to do the opposite of what they say.
Also some people think its broken even without ritual.. :/ Im not even gonna comment that again
It may be abbysal specter. (But booster box art has always been rare.)
it has very differnt art from the original. (but we think that they might try and make the new art look more like the other specters in magic)
That should sum it pretty much.

I didn't mean for it to sound like I meant that art may be for promotional work, what I meant to say was that it may have originally been a Hippy for something else other than 9th, and WotC liked the art so much they decided to use it...on something else.
I know it wouldn't be nearly as powerful without black acceleration, but I still doubt it will be in 9th.
Duskworker was comissioned to be Leaden Myr. Just as Myr Enforcer was the Blue Myr and Lodestone was the Red myr. Seriously, but when they got the art back they were inspired to make 2 new Myr and get the 5 Mana Myr dones similar.
They printed Hanabi Blast in CoK, which should have probably tipped me off to a subtle shift regarding random discard policy. Hanabi Blast just seemed so flavorful as a card (you might not get it back!) that it made sense in red, and probably didn't make people think about the random discard issue. Good choice by Wizards; they'll sell 9th Ed. boxes to some people with one rare. I wonder if they've got anything else up their sleeve. I also wonder if they'll use the policy for good or for awesome; consider replacing Mind Rot with Stupor, or printing a card similar to the very underrated Stormbind in a future set.
It's one thing to print a card that can force its owner to discard randomly. They've done it all over the red cards in Odyssey block. It's a completely different animal to print cards that force OPPONENTS to discard randomly. They're just not fun.
I hope hippie doesn't impact Standard AT ALL; otherwise it will be a really annoying addition to the format.
Random discard is FUN. I agree that it isn't fun for everyone, but only less skilled players would think that it is a bad thing to print, or unfun. I admit, not everyone would like to have a Hymn played on them turn 1. Not everyone would like to have them played on turn 2. Hymn to tourach is a Spike card, and also a tournament level card. If it sees casual play, then you have spikes playing casual, and that is almost wrong. But to argue that 'random discard is not fun,' is stupid and pointless. Random discard is not for casual magic.
rickcorgan: The fact that they talked about how bad it is doesnt matter at all!
Just look at the brilliant example of chrome mox. Just a few months before mirrodin came out there was a wotc article that talked about the importancy of not making cards that make more mana then they cost even with a drawback. Wizards loves to this sort of thing.
plentypurple: I know that its a theoritical possibility but the fact that it was removed from the website and that the other cards that were named that we know are 9th were names correctly supports it. also the fact that what other card would they use the art for? it would need to be a rare specter thats cool enough for beeing on the booster box. What would it be? abbysal specter? hollow specter? Hollow specter I think is to advanced for core set and the abbysal one was uncommon in 8th so why would be rare now? Its a lot of evidence supporting hyppies return..
squigles: I agree but Im a spike and I play casually

I have to pick up a playset of foil 9th specters (not to mention foil RUSSIAN) for my collection! Talk aabout total pimpage. Then again, due to all the hype around the card, I will end up paying through the nose for them :(.
It can't be Abyssal Specter because the art is on the 9th box top, a spot that always shows a rare card's art work. That would leave Blazing Specter, Doomsday Specter, Entropic Specter, Hollow Specter, Silent Specter, and Hypnotic Specter (was only uncommon but today would be rare like Sarra Angel) as rares. Blazing adn Doomsday are gold cards and Silent has morph so we can rule those out. Wizards in an article about discard effects said that random discard was falling out of flavor but not that they would never print it again, but at the same time Hypnotic hasn't been printed since 4th and had 7 specters to replace it none of which with random discard. Out of the possible specters for 9th, Entropic, Hollow, and Hypnotic, Hollow is the most likely being the most recently printed with a non-key mechanic. Entropic is also possible being a black version of Maro that was in 8th. While Hypnotic is possible it is very unlikely, either way you can't say Hypnotic is confirmed as of yet.

Nick: I lay a swamp, tap, dark ritual...
Me: If you cast a hypnotic specter I'll punch you in the face
Nick:...ahh I take 3 points of mana burn
The reason I play black according to CrovaxtheCursed:
Well, if we're assuming that WotC has changed there mind about allowing random discard, why can't we assume they won't do gold cards in 9th? Blazing Spectre is rare and isn't any harder to understand than anything else.
There has never been a gold card printed in any of the 8 core sets, seeing how wizards makes the core sets for new players it is safe to say that the art work is not one of the gold specters.

joseytheoutlaw: Sure there are other possibilities.. but think about it.. would any of the other specters get as much pr and coverage exept hypnotic specter? its the only specter cool and iconic enough to be on so much of wotc's 9th promo stuff. I really cant see them pushing hollow or Entropic Specter that much. And I also belive that hollow specter is to complicated for the core set but that isnt a viable argument with the unstability of wotc.
