This is gonna be a long introduction. I only started playing about a month or less ago. I moved to Texas from Michigan to live with my boyfriend. So his family and him are all I've got here(I sure hope none of them are on here.) His close family is really into games and once a month after dinner all play. I'm not really into the types of games they play and get pretty bored. I definitely don't mean this in a bad way(at all, I'm the same species, just a different breed), but him and his brother(only sibling) in particular, along with the rest of his family, are all nerds. I'm not really into the same type of nerdy stuff as them. It's not for a lack of trying, though! Because I've made an effort to try to get into all of my boyfriend's hobbies and interests. I love trying new things and am open to all types of things. However, nothing they're into(Pokemon, various board/card games, comics, video games, DnD, et cetera) has really sparked anything in me until MTG. It's...pretty awesome.
So far, I want to keep me getting into the game a secret from the rest of his family, though. His brother gets really excited about these types of things. My boyfriend really looks up to his big brother and they're so much alike. He loves talking about this type of stuff with him and letting him know what he's getting me into and such so we can all play together. When we go over his brother always excitedly talks to me about it. It's really cool and everything, and I'm so thankful that they're so inclusive and excited to get me into things. It's just really overwhelming and intimidating! They all have decks! I always feel out of my element. So for now, I just want to learn the game quietly until I'm confident enough to play with someone experienced. My boyfriend still looks up terms and doesn't quite get everything all the time.
Here's the problem. I'm getting bored of just playing my boyfriend. He's super competitive and it takes some of the fun out for me. I'm competitive as well, but it's not really about winning for me.. I wanna have fun. I really like the fantasy of the game. A lot of the time I do have fun. But lately it's mostly been sapped out. He takes forever-r-r-r to take his turn. Puts SO much thought into EVERY move that I literally started falling asleep during one game on his turn(granted, it was late and I had a few beers.) It's just starting to lose it's excitement for me. I win about 1 out of 6-7 games we play. Maybe that's part of it? I don't know. I have such a random deck(Mono-Black) and he's just way better at building them than me. He always prefers heavily Green. Sometimes Green/Blue. He just made a Red/Green wolf deck to try out and we went one round with that(I lost with him only having 3 life left, though.) It was a close game. I think he might be getting a big head just playing me all the time. I'd really love to see him play someone more experienced. I'm feeling aggressive just thinking about it... But all we have is eachother(and the online game he plays) right now. I kinda of want to see if he'll play someone at one of the game stores here. I want to see him get ravaged. Put him on a playing field with a player that's equal to him.
I want to DESTROY HIM.
I want to TEAR HIM DOWN!
I wanna WIPE THE SMUGNESS OFF HIS FACE.
And I want him to have NO IDEA WHAT HIT HIM.
He wants to create our own "Planeswalker personas" for the decks we play. We're planning on dressing up for Renn Faire this fall and originally I wanted to be a succubus and him a warlock or sorcerer. But after getting into MTG, I want to do something inspired by it. At first I was really interested in Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver for the basis of a deck, but it was mainly just for Ashiok's story, biography and image, not really for it's card. I was also into demons, because I am/was super into them before the game.. but don't seem to care for how the game deals with them(I really love dark things.) Maybe I just don't know enough about them, though? So I did LOTS of research, looked into the cards I had the most fun playing and why I liked playing them(I like deathtouch, destroying his creatures, taking cards out of his hand, making him discard things, lifelink, flying.) And despite my stubbornness in wanting to stay Mono-Black.. I want to create a Black/Green deck that revolves around Vraska the Unseen, gorgons and possibly snakes. I love Vraska and the idea of having a gorgonesque Planeswalker persona for my deck. I look up deck lists for Gorgons, Vraska and snakes. I look up individual cards, how to build a deck, do lots of reading. The issue is that I don't always understand WHAT I'm reading. I often have to look up words and terms while I'm reading and it's just a LOT to take in at once.
So that's my goal right now and that's where I'm at!
Create a deck that inspires my imagination, get better at playing and become a formidable opponent.
First off I am in a similar boat except I got into the game to impress my girlfriend...turns out nearly a year later she don't like really and I am stuck on this awesome game. Below I have listed some tools I have found especially useful, hope these help!
Magic Slang Dictionary the wiki is also an awesome place to brush up on lore and magic set block mechanics.
Tappedout.net This is a tool many players use to share their decks via link while being able to figure out detailed deck info like your mana curve.
Gatherer Your biggest tool, look up any card past or present or that perfect card you never knew existed.
Thanks! I started reading the course as soon as I read your reply. It's definitely helpful. So far I've beaten him twice(in one day!) since this post. It was pretty awesome. The first time was by a lot compared to any other time I've beat him. It was just on his test(green/red wolf/werewolf) deck, though. His green deck with all the landfall is super hard for me to play against. So, the quest is still on to make a deck that can kick his mossy teeth in.

I started using Decked Builder(the phone app), would you say that Tappedout is better to use for that type of thing instead? I'd really like to get advice on building a deck with the cards I already own and cards that I should get to enhance it.
Tappedout.net also has an android app in the google playstore which I use to sketch a deck/tweak them on whim on the go. I find that linking the deck is faster than using the posting tools here, though I highly advise you learn to use the posting tools in the reply box Guide to MTGsalvation Tags. I personally wish I had this link when I had started here so I hope you can get a jump on things, hope this helps. Also link to Tapped.out App though am unsure what operating system your smartphone is as this is for android.
It might be a bit too technical of a deck idea for you, but look into pox type decks. You could do a budget version for pretty cheap. Rips things out of his hand, destroys his resources, and starves him out of the game, all while you benefit.
If you want to go into other colors, I'm just gonna throw this card out there ALUREN. Again maybe a bit technical, but you can do crazy things with it. It's pretty available, and cheap. I could see some cool black/green shenanigans with that.

I don't get the impression that anything will be "too technical" for LittlePill. Does it take time to learn timing and strategy with a pox deck if you're new to the archetype? Sure, but it already sounds like she enjoys mono-black and discard.

I really like these cards! I love destroying his lands, taking them, taking his life, messing with his cards, pretty much anything that focuses on messing up any plans he has. Which might be bad, because I don't focus much on keeping my own life up or defending myself? Is that a type of defense? This is probably the dumbest thing ever to experienced people, but I just build my deck from cards that do what I like. I still have problems and don't understand how cards work with each other and using cards to bounce off one another when I put a deck together.
Even though I really want to focus on black, I consider adding another color a lot. I really like blue, red and green.. but don't care for white at all. The fantasy part of the game really sparks my imagination and I want the deck to reflect me.
Would it be bad to buy some of the cards and mix them with cards I already have until I get a complete pox deck or can I make my own version without following one that's already made? What determines if it's a pox deck besides having pox or smallpox(I'm assuming this is a key factor) being the focus of the deck?
I strongly recommend looking up cards through Gatherer. Whenever I have an idea for a deck, I look up specific wordings and colors for cards. For example, I might filter an Advanced search by "Green" "Creature" cards that have the text "enters the battlefield" if I want to build a deck around Green creatures with EtB triggers. If I see a card I like, I might think, "I wonder if a card that does (X) exists, as well, that would synergize with that" and look for some cards with phrasings that might resemble cards to that effect.
Hythonia the Cruel is one of my favorite Gorgon cards. However, she might not be as viable in a casual-60 format - I mostly play Commander, these days.
Anyway, good luck in your quest, and remember that Deathtouch is your friend.

If you're looking for snake-y things, I recommend some cards like Pharika's Chosen, Ambush Viper, Skullwinder, Sidisi, Brood Tyrant, and Sidisi, Undead Vizier. Glissa, the Traitor also looks Gorgon-esque, even though she's just a Zombie Elf.
Hythonia the Cruel is one of my favorite Gorgon cards. However, she might not be as viable in a casual-60 format - I mostly play Commander, these days.
