Nomic General Discussion Thread

  • #1
Turn order chart snipped, see below

Also, is there any chance that some relevant thread can be left open at all times for people to ask what they are currently able to do, based on the rules in effect at that time? I suppose I could propose a rule to that effect, but it seems like in the absence of a rule forbidding it, it would be common courtesy.

What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.

Agreed. I think a general discussion thread should be created for the purpose of asking questions, debating theory, etc, similar to the one in the mafia forum. It might not be necessary when everyone is new (since they will ask in game threads and whatnot), but once players become experienced, a thread for newer people to ask questions would be good.

I assumed that the Mod was taking it upon him/her/itself to keep that list updated and correctly bolded. A FAQ might not be a bad idea, or maybe even an idea repository in case anyone needs an idea. I know three off the top of my head that might make the game go more smoothly.

I think an idea repository would make the game stale, and discourage creativity. Instead of spending time thinking up a new rule, people just steal from ones already given to them.

There are other aspects that can be discussed other than future rule changes. For example , past rule changes and their affect on the game, politics of the game, state of the game...

This seems like a good place to check if more people want to play than signed up.

Would those who were too late for the first game be interested in a second now?

    103. A rule-change is any of the following: (1) the enactment, repeal, or amendment of a mutable rule; (2) the enactment, repeal, or amendment of an amendment of a mutable rule; or (3) the transmutation of an immutable rule into a mutable rule or vice versa.
(Note: This definition implies that, at least initially, all new rules are mutable; immutable rules, as long as they are immutable, may not be amended or repealed; mutable rules, as long as they are mutable, may be amended or repealed; any rule of any status may be transmuted; no rule is absolutely immune to change.)

I'm still confused. As my turn, can I put to vote a rule to be transmuted?

Yes. You can propose to make a mutable rule immutable (thereby making it much more difficult to change in the future) or vice versa.

Yes, you can suggest for an immutable rule to be made mutable (requiring a unanimous vote for success.) or vote for a mutable rule to turn mutable (requiring only a majority.)

When updating the turn order thread, could the mod include the date and time that the current turn began? It's not strictly necessary, but it would give us a better sense of how long we've got to mull over our potential rule proposals or votes.
If your signature takes up more lines than your actual post does, you should fix one or both of them.

I have to wait until Midnight tonight to post my proposal.

I will do so once that becomes applicable. The first turn hasn't actually started yet.

I actually was once about to do so in the Rumor Mill.speculation - where else between the Rumor Mill and the Mafia-forum can you find people making PBPAs?

One thing I'm curious about is how many threads this game is going to have. It looks like each game gets its own subforum, and then each new rule proposal is a new thread. Is there any way to keep it to slightly fewer threads? Or are changes that have already been voted on get deleted and added to the rules list?

We could in theory have all the debate in one thread, but it would become unwieldy really quickly. I don't want to be deleting any debate threads.

If anyone has a better idea on how to organize it I'm definitely interested.

I think it is well organized as is.

BTW, what happens if a player violates a rule? I see rules that say players can't do things, but nothing specifically stating what happens if they do.
  • #24
I like the idea of a new thread for every proposed change. That way we can always look back on the minutes of previous debates and better form our own proposed changes without searching through endless pages of posts. By the end, this thing has potential to be HUGE, and any measure to organize it now will only serve us in the end.

    1) Glad to see that nomic finally caught on here after my first failed attempt
    2) Boo me not being even thought of in this regard
    3) I'd love to have a go at a game
