It kinda...seems all over the place? I can't even wrap my brain around it. Like, what purpose does the Shinka serve? Do they steal guys and sac them to get Gargadon into play? There doesn't seem to be a comprehensive "stealing" strategy. Counter everything until the differing dudes can get through? I don't get it. Maybe a really good/lucky meta call? Or people saying wtf are you playing and lose to it in the confusion?
No Lightning Angels? No Momentary Blink? WTF is this garbage?
Also, just because you win a ptq doesn't mean you or your deck is good. It obviously threw people off since they had no freaking clue what they were playing against.
It looks like this person said "I wanna play a URw deck at a PTQ" and threw a bunch of cards together. Only two four-ofs in the entire thing haha.
Actually, I swear I saw a similar deck last season... here: http://www.deckcheck.net/deck.php?id=22786
Yup. I guess it's a rogue deck that pops up every once in a while, but the concept is cool, so maybe it's worth testing.
And as a Scapeshift player, I'd DEFINITELY be caught off guard by the Aven Mindcensor sideboard.
Understand, Dredge is not really a Magic: The Gathering deck. When a card is playable in it, it doesn't mean it's a tournament playable card. It means it's playable in whatever crazy fantasy world that Dredge operates in.
Ken Adams is the same guy who played it. I was there; the deck itself is just meh. The guy drew well every time I saw him, and mogg war marshal is pretty good vs zoo.
Seems like he just got the match-ups and draws he needed to win a ptq. I've won my fair share of ptq's and it seems like you need from my personal experience good match-ups, good draws, tight play, and a lot of luck. The deck itself looks pretty bad, and seems to be ll over the place and have no purpose other than to land the garadon. If you are looking to center your deck around a big creature why not just play dark depths?
Ken Adams plays this deck every extended format, he ran it last year as straight UR and he manages to win a PTQ with it every year. Its just a good player playing a deck he obviously understands very well.
Regardless of the synergies of the deck me and my playtest group built it just to play with so could understand how to play against it if we had to play it in a tournament and the deck is honestly bad. You have a good zoo match but after tha you start scooping games to dark depths, dredge and especially thopter. Fae just 2-0's you before you can even resolve a spell. The deck is awkward and all over the place, this is probably one of those "fluke" situations where a bad deck gets there.
Guys, how about you all go learn how to play this deck before you comment on it?
This deck is designed to beat the crap out of Dark Depths combo decks and yet win with tempo before the Thopter Foundry combo comes online.
It also does well vs Zoo and Faeries.
The majority of its impact spells are high manacosts and this allows it to dodge Chalice, EE and Spell Snare.
Muddle is also somewhat dodged too because of its varied ways of destroying Dark Depths.
Lol at the ignorant people commenting without even trying it out or have an extensive knowledge of the intricacies of the format.
Guys, how about you all go learn how to play this deck before you comment on it?
Why? None of us are going to play it, or against it for that matter, and the same guy has been playing the same deck in this format for the past 3 seasons. It's completely irrelevant past being gawked at as an oddity.
@jmedina: you top8ed a ptq but you didn't said anything about that rogue 1st place. Would you give us your opinion about it?
For what it's worth, I like the deck. I used to play a similar style deck in standard, it was Momentary Blink + Revilark and Gargadon.
I have never played with this deck or against it so forgive my ignorance in the following rant.
The deck seems to be strong in the tempo department. It makes your opponents removal less relevant when you can just sacrifice things to the Gargadon in response. Cards like Ajani Vengeant, Vendillion Clique and Remand keep the tempo in your favor.
What I didn't understand was why not just run Foundry Sword in this deck? I mean you can sac Thopter Tokens to the Gargedon
Anyway- I dont think the deck is "Bad" but then again -I was the one running Polymorph- LOL
All I know is if this deck becomes a regular on the scene - I will be packing some Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir in my sideboard

The problem with your statement though is that we have tested the deck. Your dark depths matchup would be decent if dark depths was still just running the dark depths combo, but no they are running thopter also. Plus the hate in the deck is to erratic, your running one of's and random 2-0f's which signal erratic deck building. Also, the majority of thopter players have switched from lsv's controlling version to a more combo oriented version where you get the combo assembled as quickly as possible and ride it. Zoo, you will beat because you are running flat out burn and creature hate. The big problem i have with the deck is it tries to be a very tempo oriented deck, while lacking the tempo. Garadon isn't that good of a win con on a lot of different levels especially with how late it comes down and how it forces you to build and play around it. By the way, i know a lot about this format, already I've top 16ed two cardboard ptq's and top eighted an online one. By all means though, feel free to play this deck if you don't mind the 0-2 bracket.

I think the biggest "problem" with this deck in as far as seeing widespread play is that it doesn't lend to being very intuitive, at least from what my playtesting on MWS has shown. Yes, there are a few smaller synergies that are fun to play around with, but it just doesn't feel that consistent. That being said, I think that if the person who created it is piloting it, he may know the intricacies better than someone who just picked it up. I think that it could very well be a good deck, but the mainstream isn't going to be able to it with that PTQ level of consistently. A consistently that can just be achieved by something like, say, some zoo deck.
SO I have tested it, and I can't play it. I don't think that is saying anything about the deck, I think it is just meant to be played by its creator. Therefore I just dn't see it surging in popularity.
2-ofs and 1-ofs are not automatically a bad choice.
The majority of the time you'll want to be playing 4-ofs or at least 3-ofs, but some decks prefer versatility over consistency. This is a risky move, but I believe that the pilot of this deck knew what he was doing.
I also don't think you win a PTQ on "lucky draws", that's silly. I also can't figure out how to properly play it. I guess that I'd need to see it in action first.

I rolled 5 D6's and got 3 fours. They must have changed the odds of getting a 4!
