I don't know why the hell I didn't think of Buddy Holly, Jim Morrison and Frank Zappa.
I love Led Zeppelin, probably my favorite band, but would it be effective to resurrect those such as John Bonham who died because of drug-related reasons? Would they get the message and cool it with their habits?
As a Skynyrd fan, I should have thought of Duane Allman; personally, though I dig some of the songs, I more respect them *as an influence on Skynyrd. The Rev, Dimebag Darrel, Chuck Schuldiner, Aaliyah, Tupac and Biggie are some others that I can respect their fans naming even if I'm not personally a fan.
I hadn't thought to go back into the Mozart-esque classical, or even as far back as Robert Johnson (though Johnson is another one I respect as an influence more than as a huge fan by itself)
Kurt Cobain. He shouldn't have died the way he did and Nirvana hadn't hit its peak in the music industry yet.
There is no grunge music left anymore, the genera of music along with the generation he created all died along with him and for all these reasons it would be amazing if he was alive...
Most of the popular ones are taken, but I see no one's mentioned Elliott Smith yet. He was older than some of them listed (early 30s), but he was still making excellent music (and 33 or whatever isn't exactly old). He had at least two albums released posthumous and they are among my favorites. There are plenty of videos of great live performances, but afterward you can't help but wish he was still making music. I've got 90-100 or so songs by him, and I could always use more.
Then again, he supposedly killed himself. The whole thing was never really cleared up; it was after an argument, and he ended up with a knife in his chest, but it's generally referred to as a suicide. Would bringing him back help? Who knows. If he didn't want to come back he could just kill himself again.
I'll have to be the 3rd or 4th person to say Chuck Schuldiner. As time continued, his genius progressed as well. His solos were intense, and he knew how to combine the most perfect vocals to his always perfectly constructed verses and chorus. He jumpstarted/pioneered a genre, progressed on that, and continued in years to fuse it with various elements. It's beautiful; it's metal.
John Bonham. I love Led Zeppelin, and it would have been cool if they'd been active a lot longer.
This - although LZ was admittedly slumping quite a bit, Bonham definitely wasn't (Bonzo's Mantreaux, anyone?) and even if him staying alive wouldn't have let them make anything else good I'm sure he would've.
Plus, he's my pick for favorite drummer of all time and all of my other picks for favorite X of all time are still living/lived a lot longer.
As for the people saying "____ would just die again" I think the point of the question was that you would get to have whoever you want have a full life with a long musical career, don't take the question so literally.

"Virtue, Jacques, is an excellent thing. Both good people and wicked people speak highly of it..."
I know he was already old, but I'd bring back Ronnie James Dio.
Listening to The Devil You Know it was quite clear that his voice was still at its peak although he was in his 60's. I just know he and H&H had another killer album left in them, but that album will never come to light.
Listening to Dio, Rainbow, Sabbath or Heaven and Hell is just so bitter sweet for me now. Dio was like a loving grandfather to every metalhead, and we all loved him.
Didn't matter if your thing was death, black, power or thrash...Dio was a man that everyone respected.
I guess that The Devil You Know will have to stand as his Magnum Opus, which I suppose is suiting since it is genius and amongst the best work of his career.
I wasn't really an Avenged Sevenfold fan and I don't know if any one has said this: The Rev. That was sad and way too early.
Edit: After taking the time I see that The Rev was mentioned here. I would like to say I got to see them live while he was living and it was a pretty fun show to say the least.
Quorthon or Euronymous, tbh. Mayhem quickly went to ☺☺☺☺ without Euronymous' guidance (Chimera was an okay album though, I admit). And well, Quorthon... Bathory is undebatably one of the greatest bands of all time. It's a shame that Quorthon left us.
Son, Ronnie James Dio is one of the classiest, most masculine figures in music history, and he was taken from us FAR too soon. I'd like to see you tell Wendy Dio, or the legions of metal/Dio fans, that he "did not die too early". Actually, wait, no I wouldn't... save your dumb opinions for another thread.

I will throw my hat in for Quorthon. I am a fan of classical, jazz, metal, and folk, but Bathory's viking metal is truly epic. It isn't the same epic as classical compositions, or a sick funk solo, or even other viking metal songs; it was raw, awe-inspiring, and a flavour all its own. If only he were around for Nordland III and IV, or even beyond!
It was the anniversary of his death a few days ago. R.I.P. Quorthon \m/
I was about to flip until I finally saw Stevie Ray mentioned. Definitely one of my top picks; I've always been a bit bummed that I didn't really get into his stuff until after he'd died. So yeah, I have to go with either him or Morrison. I think it would've been interesting to see how much more amazing music the Doors could have produced had he lived a bit longer.
