A promo copy of ATHEIST's album Jupiter was amongst the things I found in a local radio station's "excess free promos" bin. Very-heavy metal has been one of the genres I've been meaning to try out more of, so I picked it up.
From what I've listened to off of it so far, my reaction is similar to my reaction to other extreme metal: the instrumentation is kickass, but I don't like the screaming style of vocals.
With that in mind, could anybody point me to some good instrumental-only extreme metal? (whether intended as an instrumental-only track, or the instrumental-only version of a regular song)
I've got a few bands that came to mind. Animals As Leaders is one. They perform progressive metal that is entirely instrumental. Another is Cloudkicker, an instrumental djent (one-man) band that's pretty much blown me away.
I know the harsh vocals are pretty difficult to get past for some people, but you might enjoy the band Cynic. I've seen them be mentioned with Atheist often, but Cynic take an even more jazz/progressive approach and even have some neat auto-tuned clean vocals (between the growls).
There's likely to be more but that's just off the top of my head.
Oh yeah, it's also worth noting that while Jupiter is pretty solid in my opinion, Atheist have much better albums out there. Jupiter is their latest, and also their come-back.
Here are my favorite instrumental extreme metal songs. I don't know or listen to that many instrument extreme metal bands, since I like hearing lyrics every so often.
Longitudes by No Consequence. It's a pity that there are vocals in the song Latitudes just after it, because they flow together so well and are meant to be listened to together - in fact I couldn't find it on youtube without it linking into latitudes. When the singing starts here, you're into latitudes. Synaesthesia is imo even better.
Prosperity by The Absence is good. So is Intro: same deal as Longitudes/Latitudes: once there are lyrics, you're into A Breath Beneath.
Here's some youtube compilation someone made that I listened a bit to, seemed good - Mors Principium Est and Sylosis are both amazing.
Into Eternity is basically progressive extreme metal but they don't use heavy vocals much.
All of these bands are amazing, among my favorites.
Two last things I wanna say: I still dislike atheist's vocals, and only listen for instruments. That, and generally speaking the longer you listen to extreme metal vox you more you being to like them.

Those suggestions sound cool; I'll follow up on them.
I recognize that extreme heavy metal instrumentation can be more than simple blunt force; that much I have already acknowledged.
Some of my other favorite bands have successfully combined the heavy with the intricate without being as heavy, Led Zeppelin for instance.

Offical High Priest of Reign of Blood
Ataxia by Within the Ruins. Just an amazing song. Roads is good too.

Aspirations by After the Burial technically isn't instrumental but lyrics are sparse (only in middle). Same with Enigma of Torrents by Archon. Burden of Life's Behold a Burning Soul is similar but there's a bit more lyrics.
Hacride's Phenomenon is amazing.
