HBO just approaved "A Game of Thrones" pilot, which has been floating around in limbo for a while now. So far the only news is on GRRM's Live journal, but I will post the HBO link as soon as I can find it.
Now if only he could finish writing A Dance with Dragons.
Media is not making me steal. But in a way is like the story of the very hot girl with the short skirt teasing the old sick guy with a history of rape.
Wow, great news. I can't wait to see it. I hope they end up making a full season, as it will surely be great.
I wonder if they plan to squeeze the whole first book into one season though? Seems like it might not fit.
According to what I remember they are planning to do a book a season, with each episode being a chapter or two in length. But this is only what they were planning to do when the news broke all that time ago when HBO first bought the rights to it. As to whether or not they still plan on doing it like that, I guess only time will tell.
i am sure they will butcher it worse than, the sword of truth series they are now trying to pull off(not HBO but some other station i can not recall at the moment)...they need to understand the scope of what they are taking on..its hard enough cramming one book worth of plots and sub plots in to a movie...but to take on some as epic as a game of thrones where every little plot detail builds on the other...it will fail worse than some one trying to build a house of card in front of a fan.

I have faith that they will do a good job and keep it extremely faithful. GRRM is supposed to write a couple of episodes per season and to be an advisor on the program, which should keep things in line and as faithful as possible. I personally have faith that GRRM and HBO can pull this off, if anybody can. And I have faith that it will be one of the better series based off of a book series. Plus GRRM has said that the pilot script is good and faithful.

I find your doubt in need of prozac.
i am praying you are right, and i agree if anyone can do it hbo can. But HBO has a left series unfinished or rushed finished...off the top of my head Carnival and The Wire(which has some of the greatest writing ever done for a tv show) But my concern is the amount of story arcs in the series and if they just do one book then what happens do they stop? will they alter the story for a more main stream crowd...i dont know im just a little snake bitten from the whole sword of truth attempt and that is a much simpler series....and i have no doubt prozac should be in my system...i am just to bull headed to try it

Great news! I've not finished the series yet, but I'm plugging through both it and Hobbs' Assassin serie at the same time. Great to see a Game of Thrones hit the screens - hopefully they can pull it off well.

On a side note if you do finish the series before the pilot airs, please tell the rest of us what alternate dimension you bought the last books in.
Finally I doubt, that given the success of the series that HBO will only do one season and leave it at that, I think if they green light one season they will probably green light the other books as well. Or maybe that is just my Dark Optimism unleashed.
I'm not as excited about this as the rest of you. I'm huge fan of the series...but the movie is always worse than the book. This series is so epic, and so fantastic, that I hope HBO does it justice (I'm also pissed that I don't have HBO anymore...)
Edit: And yeah...He really needs to get this book done...it has all of my favorite characters. I was bored with Feast
Nor am I as excited. I have found that the book is better than the movie. As far as I can remember, I have always felt that way. From my own personal experience, and off the top of my head: Where the Red Fern Grows, Old Yeller, White Fang, Lonesome Dove, Jurassic Park, Timeline, I mean the list is quite long. I really hope it turns out well, but in nearly every instance the movie, or TV series, is not as good. Personally, I'll be waiting for the boxed set, if it gets that far. Sure HBO has some good hour long dramas, but I just don't think that GRRM "A Game of Thrones" is made for TV. In any case, that was my two cents.

Got some spare time, check out my blog, it's my first one, but it's pretty fun so far. Thanks! http://agentbill.blogspot.com/
The movie is always worse than the books because the person making them envisioned something different than you did. This is a series, therefore it leaves room for way more detail and GRRM is going to working closely with the series. I have complete faith in GRRM and HBO pulling this off.
I think this series was made for a good, but gritty, tv series. Esp with some fantastic acting, this could become amazing.
This is actually quite true, because it attracts fans of political novels, fans of fantasy novels, fans of war novels, and just your general literary fans (i.e. English Professors :sneaky:). It is sort of the perfect series to be made into a TV series, since you can do it right, while attracting such a diverse fan base.
I am going to have to agree with Mr Brady on this one. While I am a huge fan of this series, I dont see anyone being able to bring forth the scope and detail of this to the small screen.
Terry Goodkind's "The Sword of Truth" series is being butchered by TBS/CW and really makes me apprehensive for this series. The main problem is that even though the writer is overseeing the production doesnt mean it is going to translate correctly. Terry Goodkind was all over the promos for "Seeker" and even talked it up as "My story come to life." but anyone who has read those books and seen what they did to his world, will know why Mr Brady and I arent holding our breath for HBO to do any better with this.

Round One: Bill Copes playing Stax
Bill seems like a nice guy till I see that he's playing Stax and realize (by way of a concrete Magic formula I learned from my 4th grade math teacher) he has no soul.
I think that this series will do better than 'Legend of the Seeker'. For one thing, it's HBO, and they're known for quality shows. And secondly, I think that Martin will do a better job of keeping them true to the subject matter than Goodkind, because Martin is a better writer, and cares more. Goodkind sold out a long time ago and started using his books primarily as political vehicles.
And I disagree that a TV series can't capture the scope of ASoIaF. If anything, because the series is so focused on politics, person to person interaction etc, it should be EASIER to capture it than it would most fantasy series.
I really hope you are right, and HBO will do a good job with this, but I wont be subscribing to HBO until after I can get some confirmation from fans of the series that it lives up to the books.

I think Peter Jackson's direction with The Lord of the Rings movies is the way to go here. Be faithful to the source material, but in the sense of being respectful, not in trying to put the books into movie form line by line. It simply can't be done. Take what is most important, figure out how you're going to string those most important bits together, and throw everything else out.
If you're making a television show then making it a good show should be the first priority, and accurately recreating the books should be second in my opinion.

One means that he has not finished the currently released series.
