So, it's back tonight after an eight-month hiatus. Will anyone still be watching?
TVGuide says:
In the season premiere episode, "The Beginning of the End," feeling that their rescue is close at hand, the survivors don't know whether to believe Charlie's final message that the people claiming to liberate them are not who they seem to be. The band of friends, family, enemies and strangers must continue to work together against the cruel weather and harsh terrain if they want to stay alive. But as they have discovered during their 90-plus days on the island, danger and mystery loom behind every corner, and those they thought could be trusted may turn against them. Even heroes have secrets.
well i didn't think tonights episode was that good.
i thought the whole episode was missing that one thing to really make it exciting. at the end i was expecting something to totaly shock me but it never came.
i just hope this season of lost isn't as bad as heroes.

It was a very subtle lead in. It's prepping us for some amazing revelations in the coming episodes. Keep the following in mind.
Hurley's future story took place before Jack's
It appeared Locke was in the cabin, or maybe the flash of the eye was again Jacob.
Hurley appears to have unwittingly teleported to and from the cabin. Super spoiler about that below.
Teleportaion is going to be a major theme this season if the Orchid video has any weight to it. So will cloning and eternal youth, as suggested by the 3 Japanese doctors with differing names (Edgar Hallowax/Marvin Candle/OtherGuyName?) and the fact Richard never gets old.
Charlie tells Hurley he has to help "them". Them being who's left on the island supposedly.
I thought this was an awesome series opener...and that it answered two HUGE questions right away:
1. Only six people "officially" get off the island. That's really low.
2. The cover-up of what happened to those six people is extensive enough that Hurley has to deny knowing Ana-Lucia.
In the scene in the gym, we see that Jack is - at this point - really concerned that the cover-up will be blown, unlike when we see him after his bear has fully grown in. And though Hurley's lips are sealed, he is already thinking about going back to help the people left behind. (Charlie's hand say's "They Need You" in the interrogation room scene.)
So when Hurley says he wishes he had stayed with Jack, it must be out of regret for something Hurley could have done to prevent the current situation. The fact that Hurley is both among the "Oceanic Six" and Locke's team on-island is really intriguing.
I don't think that Hurley was physically transported to the cabin. It seems more likely that Jacob's cabin is not physically real, but perhaps a manifestation of Jacob's mind. This would tie in better with whatever they are going to be doing with Walt.
Also, Christian was in Jacob's chair. This seems to fit with the last mobisode,"So it Begins," which has Christian talking to Vincent on the island in a scene that takes place right before the opening shot of the first episode. This could be the same phenomenon that allowed Eko to speak to Yemi right before being killed by the Monster. The eye at the window first reminded me of Desmond, but it could have been the same Jacob Locke briefly saw.

I'll buy that. Whether or not either my or your explanation is correct, one thing remains the same that I didn't realize until just now.
Hurley saw Jacob.
As far as I know, that's a big deal. Hell, it got John shot and thrown in a pit.
Still freaked about the NY lottery Numbers more than anything in this episode lol. Rows and Mem even live here too!
Anyone want to speculate on who the other three in the "Oceanic Six" are? We have Hurley, Jack and Kate...Sayid seems likely to me since he still has the open, off-island story arc with Nadia. Not sure if that would actually relate to the story of the island though.
Next episodes apparently written by Brian K. Vaughan, though, so I can't wait to see that.
Wow, I didn't know that. Another reason to look forward to next Thursday (or Friday morning for me, as I'm at work on Thursday nights and have to wait to see it online).
Answering my own question here, but I found the mobisodes. They're on abc.com, referred to as LOST: Missing Pieces" ... they're short little vignettes that show scenes that sort of fit between the lines of the story as we know so far (for example, one shows Hurley's interesting encounter at the end of Season 2 when Libby went to get blankets from the hatch for their "picnic").
Right now there are only 12 on the official site. The 13th and final one is "So It Begins," which Rowsdower referred to. I believe it was just released (to mobile phones?) the other day, so as of yet I've been unable to find it online. I read the synopsis though. Interesting stuff...

I know he did at least one episode last season, and I think he's a permanent writer for them now. He better be, since he stopped writing Y on me!!!!!!#@&(^*&@^#(*^@#
I liked the episode. Lots going on, and set up the pieces for a potentially great season.
So what's the guess on the 'Oceanic 6'? Jack, Kate, Hurley and ????
I'm guessing no on Juliet, Locke, Jin and Sayid. Maybe Sun, Claire and Desmond make it? Though I can see them killing off Desmond as Penny tries to beat the clock.
the whole season just kind of skipped around and didn't have much feel to it cause the writers were rushing through it.
i think that we shouldn't be forgetting michael and walt when it comes to the oceanic 6. they could easily be 2 of the 6 and if that is the case than whos the other 1?
Okay, so I guess I should admit up-front that I've been following the spoilers for this season pretty heavily over on the fuselage, and I already knew what was going to happen in this episode. Still, though, there just wasn't anything that *would* have shocked me anyway. Nothing to compare to there being a man living in the hatch like in Season 2. The three things that affected me most were
1) Jack actually trying to kill Lock. He was going to do it. He's gone completely off the deep end and at this point I think it's fair to call him a tyrant. His monolithic ego demands that any who disagree with him be wiped out; I honestly wouldn't be terribly surprised if he tries to get the Freighters to help him hunt down and kill Lock.
2) Charlie. 'Nuff said.
3) Hurley found Jacob's cabin, yes, but what is MUCH more interesting is that he broke the seal of grey ash surrounding it! I have a hunch that seal was the only thing that allowed the Others to keep Jacob's powers in check - I can't wait to see him go medieval on the Freighters. Also, it definitely was Christian that Hurley saw in the cabin, which is some seriously freaky sh*t. Like someone else mentioned, the mobisode "So It Begins" clearly establishes that Christian somehow has an independent existence outside of Jack's guilt-induced hallucinations and that he can actually physically interact with other people (or at least Vincent, who I strongly suspect has much more significance than we know yet. Need I mention his portrait in the cabin?).

The episode was a bit better than I expected, but considering how low my expectations were, that's not saying much. It is extremely confusing about the mobisode things. I haven't seen them and now I'm wondering what, if anything, I've missed. I almost don't even care.
Anyway, there was one thing that I noticed that I may be wrong about:
When Hurley was approaching the cabin, there was a bunch of whispering. I thought that I heard something like "He's the one." Can that be confirmed or disproved?
i think that we shouldn't be forgetting michael and walt when it comes to the oceanic 6. they could easily be 2 of the 6 and if that is the case than whos the other 1?
Micheal and Walt wouldn't count towards the Oceanic 6 because they left the island before hand. Desomnd, and Juliette are also ruled out because they weren't on the plane. Jack, Kate and Hurley are obv 3 of the 6, I think Sawyer is another because in Sea. 3 finale Kate mentions "he'll be waiting" or "wondering where I am" something like that. That was a very small coffin in Sea. 3 finale, so I think maybe, depending on how far in the future the stories are taking place, Aaron and Clarie are the other 2, and Aaron died. In lieu of Sawyer being the 4th, it may be Sun, as she MUST get off the island or die in child birth (pending some twist where Juliete finally saves a pregnant woman)
I also don't know anything about a circle of ash.
Nice job spotting the subject in the portrait, I tried real hard.
I agree with highroller on the best line, Ben = smartass. lol
Lots and lots and lots of in depth stuff, plus tons of easter eggs all up to date. For example, Hurley and Jack played HORSE. Jack had HO, H is letter 8 and O is letter 15, ooohhh.

The episode isn't exceptionally thrilling, but I don't really care at this point, because they're building up to huge things.

Anyway, there was one thing that I noticed that I may be wrong about:
For starters, we always knew it would happen.
The second thing is this will allow for character development among Jack's side. Because who's gone with Jack?
Jack
Kate

THIS is the way to bring in new characters. Not that nonsense with Paolo and Nikki.
