Does anyone else despise how Comedy shows have the fake "laughter" sounds whenever a "joke" is made? They're absolutely pointless. When someone doesn't catch on to a joke, having to point it out ruins it. That, and a lot of the shows play the laughter at completely stupid moments that don't have any trace of humour.
That, and it's rather degrading to think of the mindset of the producers. Apparently viewers are too stupid to understand humour without being walked through it.
I always hated laugh tracks...The ones that made me the angriest was the one on The Drew Carey show; there was this guy who would always go 'hey HEY, hey,' instead of laughing...So annoying.
Jace on the other hand gives you card advantage for no life cost. On the contrary, Jace can actually take some damage for you. I'd think that makes him better than Arena.
Fake laughter is retarded. Shows that have real laughter, by virtue of being filmed in front of a live studio audience (oh how I miss hearing that brief voiceover at the beginning of a show!), are better than shows with no laugh tracks at all. Cheers really did it for me, for some reason. Good God, I miss it.

A lot of humor in such shows is that were they to happen in real life they wouldn't be funny at all. For example, a husband walks in on his wife and some guy making out. In a comedy, a laugh track would be used, but in an a drama it would be a moment of silence (heck, if the scene were meant to be serious, it would still have silence as a background, even if the show were a comedy).
Music and other background sounds are essential to setting a mood. Take a look at all those "worlds funniest animals/bloopers/whatever". Whether you laugh or cry at the situation can be severely affected by what sound is in the background.

This is a poor example. I wouldn't cry at a guy getting hit in the groin by a football just because some producer decided to play sad music. I think I would actually laugh even more.

That still isn't funny. Now, if the reaction was funny, or there was a good follow-up to it, then it would be worth laughing to. Otherwise it just proves my point.
Dharma and Greg is the worst offender as far as canned laughter goes, I think.
Friends was great because it was in front of a live studio audience, so the laughter was genuine.

Maybe it's an urban legend, but I thought all canned laugh tracks were various snips of recordings of laughter from Radio City Music Hall in the 1950s.
So in a lot of the cases of laughter in modern television shows, a lot of the laughers have been dead for decades. 'Something to think about.
Personally, I freaking hate laugh tracks -- and shows like (the short-lived) Sports Nights (and the even shorter-lived) Freaks and Geeks have a much higher quality of comedy than ****ing dog **** like Dharma and Greg.
I don't watch Arreseted Development often, but that show doesn't do the laugh track thing and I think it's better for it.
Laugh tracks are really a crutch for poor writing and bad television where the producers have no recourse but to tell you: "This part is funny. Laugh, damn it!!!" I find swelling orchestral strings in Hollywood movies similarly manipulative.

They must have pumped marijuana smoke into that theater because the only thing funny about Friends was how much Lisa Kudrow looked like a man. That show suuuuccckkkeedddd.
bardo: I've disagreed with you on matters of philosophy, world politics, macroeconomics, etc, but now you've really crossed the line. Friends is one of the greatest shows of the 90s, and anyone who says otherwise will receive the blunt of Highroller's axe (if he'll let me borrow it).

WTF how can anyone say freinds sucked . it was one of the best and funniest sitcoms in a long time if not ever. and shows with laugh tracks usually suck but i think saying they are a crutch for bad writing is a matter of opion as sometimes they use the laugh tracks on purpose to add additional humor. and there are many shows that live on and do well despite the dreaded laugh track.

Agreed.. Friends was my favourite show for the longest time.. its kind of sad that its not running anymore..
Also on the fake laughter, it isnt really the laughter itself thats the problem, its how poorly they use it

Just add me on msn if you have any questions or just want to talk
and het most of the nations television s viewing audience seemed to be tunigng onto the show and amde it hugely successful for something like ten hears, I dont mean to be rude or anyhting but it is obvious that most of the shows humor must have been beyond you or something cause just abput every episode ive ever seen of friends had me literally laughing out loud for minutesd at a time to the point where my family members in the othe rparts of the house would give me funny looks and ask if i was okay.

Quite easily. It was a festering sore on the face of television. I had several episodes inflicted on me at a friend's house. I didn't laugh once. There was nothing to laugh at - not "I didn't find the jokes funny", there was quite literally nothing to laugh at; no jokes, no gags, no puns, nothing. The laugh track on Friends is there to tell you when you should be laughing.
Here's a genuine example of a scene in Friends - I'm not making this up:
JOEY opens the door.
<audience laughs>
JOEY: Hi.
<audience laughs>
Now, I'd always assumed that laughter was canned. If that was a live audience, then the best thing they could have done was pump Zyklon-B into the studio and rid the world of 500 morons.
what show did you watch? I loved friends and think it was a good show, but I'm glad they ended it as it was getting too old. Now to say I can understand why some people would think that the jokes are not funny but situation does have a lot to do with jokes and opening a door could be funny but I don't remember a show like you are saying.
But laugh tracks can improve a show and encourage laughter if done correctly. Its just sort of a dead art and they think laughter can be added every 5 seconds.

blah blah blah! Firends as a few good seasons, but the last 3 were basically, Joey does somethign really stupid, laugh, crap about everyone having sex and pheobe is insane. Now that I think about it, that is what Friends is all about. :slant:
Best example of the laugh track is the George Lopez show. Its not funny at all, and the laughs are just disgustingly placed. I wish I could make fun of spanish people and not be called a bigot.

Yes. The theme is one of animated programs not having laugh tracks.
A more useful comparison could be drawn by citing examples such as Scrubs or Malcolm in the Middle.
