Torchlight 2, the sequel to Torchlight, is an action-rpg game developed by Runic Games. If you don't recognize the name Runic Games, try these two names: Max Schaefer and Matt Uelmen. Yes, Runic Games has several people who worked to create the original Diablo series as "Blizzard North".
The fundamentals of the game are similar to Diablo - the focus is on killing monsters, looting items, improving your character, repeat.
The official website for the game: http://www.torchlight2game.com/
Note the link on the right to the Runic Games forums. That is a good place to lurk for information if you want to learn more about character classes and other game features that the main site leaves out.
If the Tristram town music started playing in your head when you read the name Matt Uelmen, you'll be happy to hear that Runic Games is giving away free downloads of the Torchlight 2 soundtrack. You'll find it right on the official website above.
Torchlight 2 releases September 20th at 10:00AM Pacific time. It is being released through digital download via Steam, directly from RG, or other options detailed on the website.
To begin a conversation, what character class will you pick first? Outlander, Embermage, Berserker, or Engineer? Any specific plans for your skills?
The ability to mod the game is one of the more anticipated qualities of TL2. Do you have any plans already for a mod project?
100% agree with Belgareth. There are many people who were not in the know about Runic Games and only discovered them through the community of Diablo fans. It's unfortunate that so many of us were uninformed (myself included), but it goes to show how important brand name and marketing are, and on the flip side, how crucial word of mouth and forum communities are for promoting Indie or near-Indie games.
I've got to say, I'm really excited about modding Torchlight 2. Borderlands 2 looks sweet, but the goal of learning everything about the game and designing and developing a cool mod is what's putting TL2 ahead for me. If I had to pick one to play now and another to wait a year or two, I gotta go with TL2 so I won't feel behind in the modding community. I played so many Diablo 2 mods that I'm excited not only to play lots of TL2 mods but I also want to give something back this time around.
I think this is a pretty bad time to release just because a lot of big name releases are coming out and borderlands 2 coming out like days before. It will still do quite well based on good word of mouth and a lot of buzz on the internet. If it was a higher priced title I would say releasing at this time would be ludicrous. Ideally the best time would have been 1 month after Diablo 3 came out when people were really ripping into the game.
Releasing in like July or something would have been extremely ideal tons of people off for summer vacations or something.

Going by TL1 sales. It isn't a bad time ever to release a game like Torchlight.
For instance, the second year sales were larger than the first year sales for Torchlight 1.
Also it's 20 dollars. It's easily bought in tandem with another game. It's also heavily promoted on Steam, and has been available for pre-order for months via Steam.
Wish they launched with a Mac version. I stopped playing D3 at 100hrs. Monk endgame was fun, but act 2 was way too frustrating to get the marginal gear improvements I needed to progress. Felt messy, confined, not fun. It was really good until 70 hrs or so, I'd say...
Once those steam sales hit, I'll be sure to pick this up on the cheap, unless I get bored of my current games. Looks like fun, and D3 is so boring, that I doubt I'll return to it for a while. If it has a proper endgame loot system then I'll probably be addicted for a long time.

Well I hope everybody who wanted to get the game got it! Launch day today was a bit rocky, especially for non-Steam players. It seems Runic couldn't handle all the traffic.
I'm not too deep yet but the one thing that stands out as a fun system is the charge system. You build a bar of charge as you hit things and use skills that build charge, and once you fill the bar, all your skills cost zero mana for a limited time (plus some other effects). As Magic players I'm sure you understand how fun (and broken) it is to cast spells for free! One spell that's fun to spam is the Embermage's ice nova / teleport skill. I normally use it conservatively, but when it's free it's great fun to dance around the screen or travel to a point quickly.
Just got this game a few days ago and been playing it solo (I prefer going at my own pace to having to do what others want - besides, my pet is all the support I need) and it has been fantastic so far.
