I like to point and click and make things explode mage style, AOE super-nukes are something I've always found fun. I used to play runescape but the combat is so messed up I never really liked it, and the rune system is just awkward and crazy expensive.
I do like skilling, it's sort of relaxing although I think runescape is a bit too crowded and grindy. it's bad enough it takes weeks of work for a 99, but fighting over skilling spots is just irritating.
I used to play Spiral Knights, I thought it was pretty fun. It's free, but it's really slow getting up to the point where you can play for free for more than like, an hour a day. You can speed things up with micro-transactions if you wish, but it's not needed to play. I was solo'ing the hardest dungeons without spending a dime after a month or so.
I haven't played in a long while though, so I don't know if any of that has changed or not btw.
Guild Wars 2 will be out soon, if you're willing to wait that long. Combat is very dynamic and the elementalist has plenty of stuff to make things go boom. You do have to buy the game, but after the initial investment it is entirely f2p.

Even if the author is silenced, the performance is stopped, the story will not end.
Whether it's a comedy or a tragedy, if there is cheering, the story will continue on.

That is definitely the best suggestion here. Guild Wars was a great game, and GW2 looks just as good, if not better.

Currently Getting Back into the swing of MTGS. Bear with me folks~
Dungeon Fighter Online is a free MMO that sounds like it would fit your style. It's a dungeon crawler mixed with MMO that has a large variety of classes and play styles to play around with. Another plus is a total lack of reliance on the item mall to have fun. Nexon has seen fit to make the item mall cater almost exclusively to end game players so have no worries about being goaded into giving them cash if you are just looking for something to kill time.
I also support Guild Wars 2 suggestions though that is not technically "free."
Dcuo's market economy became warped beyond recognition with the implementation of free to play.
While I'm happy the servers are full I'm actually disappointed items that are mediocre at best selling for multi millions of credits in game.
But the game is real fun to play so if in game markets don't bother ya I would suggest picking it up.
Everquest 2 is free-to-play, although I haven't played it since it made the pricing transition. Don't know how much of the content is free, but I've heard its a fair bit.
They just rolled out a rather hilarious feature that uses a webcam to match your character's facial expressions with your own:
dungeon's and dragons online has the best quest design i've seen so far :O, but it's only about half f2p, the higher level half basically requires that you dish out some cash

Hewo wittle fishy!
They're free to play once you've bought them, but they require an up-front buy.
That being said, I've played GW1 for the past 7yr and played in all the GW2 betas and all games are completely worth the price of admission.

The fact that you can level any char from 1-50 with only minor creation options limited hair/face etc..
The best part of the game is playing 1-50, they really dropped the ball giving people stuff to do afterwards.
Feel free to bid on my cards here!
