I've had a question about this game that I've had pretty much since it came out.
what's with people quitting as soon as they start to lose a game instead of just waiting for their opponent to beat them?
is there a benefit to doing this?

The game's over faster for both players, so they can both play another game sooner. But mostly, it's just polite. Different games have different cultures and etiquette associated with them. In Starcraft, like in chess, it's rude to fight it out to the bitter end when it's obvious you're going to lose. But in baseball (and indeed most other athletic sports), "It ain't over 'til it's over."

It's actually considered very rude to do that. You're just wasting everyone's time if you do that.
Yeah, that's one of the reason why they implemented the "reveal everything" rule, because people used to pylon/supply depot hide, and if the game was really only finished when you've "finished" your opponent, it would be pretty frustrating to play, so it's considered good mannered to gg as soon as it's clear that you've lost, and save your opponent the time to manually kill all your buildings.

This, except that some people quit when the fight really isn't over. I've watched a few replays where people who called gg early really still had a fighting chance.

Hide the Pylon was the most. Annoying. Game. Ever.
(Just to clarify for everyone who didn't play SC1, you only lost if you had 0 buildings left, and it didn't reveal your buildings after losing your Nexi/CCs/Hatches.)
I'm pretty sure they fixed that in WC3 by making you lose if you only had food buildings left (don't quote me on that), so is this also true in SC2? (I mean, along with the revealing mechanic.)

lol, I hated that a lot too, I'm glad they reveal your base if you loose your command building

No, they have to lose every building.
Also, sometimes it really DOES come down to the single pylon. Uniden's battle was a great example of why this can happen.

The game has simply become "Hide your main building"
Doubly frustrating when the enemy makes a CC and flies it to an obscure location in the map. Triple frustrating when you just won with ground units, so now you have to take the time to make your air unit building and start pumping out air units...

It is always easy to be tolerant and understanding...Until someone presents an opinion completely opposite to your own.
I hate it when people hide their command centre, and I hate it when they hide on an island covered with missile turrets, and I've only had it done to me once
As in tourney structure. The earliest rounds are played in groups of 4 with two players advancing. It leads to really interesting games and some interesting upsets since its the round with the most unknown players.
Edit: This is the game I was thinking about while I commented. Liquid Tyler vs Daboo.
Tyler ends up losing very narrowly, it was a very interesting game.
The group stages are basically round robin, where each player plays 1 set against each other player in their group. The top 2 then advance forward into the single eliminations afterwards.
I like Naama's style of play as terran. Very solid.
That's.. *krhm*, because he's from Finland.
