I really liked Final Fantasy VII, but I think it's pretty far from being the best game ever made. Like some previous posters pointed out, FFVII was for many people their first RPG and thus has great sentimental significance. Sure, it was the first FF game on the PS1, was rendered in then revolutionary 3-D graphics, and it featured a particularly heart-wrenching scene where your potential love-interest is skewered by a stereo-typically monotone anime baddy with silver hair (remember: Silver Hair= Evil) and an impossibly long sword, but I still think it's been placed on a disproportionally tall pedestal. Case in point: I recently made a trip to BuyBacks (a chain that deals in used media) and saw that they were selling a used copy of Final Fantasy VII for $146 .
! The game is relatively common and it's available for download on Playstation Network. If that isn't a strong enough indicator that a game's overrated, I don't know what is.
God of War. I have GoW 1+2 HD collection and GoW3 and I will tell you that this is the worst of the so called holy trinity of the hack and slash action games. The combat is shallow, unsatisfying, and the games are pretty easy honestly. I have no idea why would anyone like this over Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden.
Baldurs Gate 2. I got this from gog.com a couple of games ago and i must say....It has aged very badly unlike other great rpgs during it's time. Besides the awful controls, there are numerous problems that even prent you from playing the game proberly if you are running windows 7 64bit. The graphics are blurry and have to be reconfigured by your drivers and the controls don't respond that well. At the beginning of the game you get pretty much 3 party members but you can only move the main character + 2 other party members at the same time. You have to make the other character the party leader and have them move and you have to keep on repeating the process. It's such a hassle. The combat is awful. I wish it was turn based because it would be a lot more manageable instead of having my characters not do anything while being attacked.
FF7. You are playing as a character who doesn't even know what he is supposed to be doing, the storyline is messed up and the materia system is so easy to abuse. The characters don't fully develop. People need to take of their nostalgia glasses and stop asking for a remake.
SF2. It's extremely outdated by other 2d fighters. People really need to let go of the nostalgia. Every other SF game pretty much expended on it and added new things.
Call of Duty. It's pretty much the same thing year in year out...

that's what I felt while playing them too but people just told me I'm crazy

I thought the point of a hack and slash is that the combat doesn't have to be hard. Then again I never found DMC combat hard... Ninja Gaiden is a bit too hard for the average player, I think. I never really thought of it as hack and slash (I guess because of the difficulty thing I just pointed out) it does make sense though.
I personally enjoyed the GoW series a lot because I love classical era stuff, even if they get things wrong. It's just a series I can sit down to and play through and kind of just enjoy myself.

"Virtue, Jacques, is an excellent thing. Both good people and wicked people speak highly of it..."
Such an underwhelming game. Every single time I check my bank account balance I think "this would be fifty bucks higher if Starcraft 2 hadn't happened."
I would go ahead and say just about all of Blizzard's offerings in the last ten years or so have been over-rated. The last truly great game that they had was the original Starcraft. The rest were just good or mediocre.
ITT: Shooter players hate on RPGs, and RPG players hate on shooters, with console wars thrown in.
In ignorance, I would say that The Witcher was overrated; I managed to play for two hours before the bland combat system turned me off. The fans probably praise it for detail and depth of story though, so I don't hold that conviction very strongly.
I think that out of the CoD franchise, that Modern Warfare gets too much praise. I never played it when it came out, but MW2 and Black Ops were improvements, even if MW2 introduced knifing. Every server I play on has to auto-ban Grenade Launchers, Last Stand, Martyrdom, and RPGs. That certainly doesn't lend itself to praise over the newer games. Before I played online, I absolutely loved Call of Duty 2 and 3! I miss the WW2-style shooters. Give me an Lee Enfield rifle over an AK47 any day!
Out of the Bethesda series of games, I think Daggerfall is the most overrated. Getting out of the starting dungeon requires luck or metagaming, and while it has an insane amount of content, it is almost all randomly generated, rather than handmade.
People that say the Dragon Age series was better than the Elder Scrolls series... it must be gameplay preference. I played an hour of DA: Orgins before quitting because, like The Witcher, combat was just bland. Bethesda puts years into their games and it shows. My opinion.
I laugh heartily at people that say Bethesda and/or Bioware are 'trying to kill WRPGs.' They're making video games, get over it or get a different hobby.

... Diablo II, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, World of Warcraft, all subsequent World of Warcraft expansions, Starcraft II.
"The last truly great game they had was the original Starcraft"? Really now? You can't find one good game out of all of those?

Bioshock?
I got the release dates of Diablo 2 and expansion mixed up. Yeah, those are great, but I still don't think anything after that is anything more than good.
SF2. It's extremely outdated by other 2d fighters. People really need to let go of the nostalgia. Every other SF game pretty much expended on it and added new things.
I agree with most of your comments. But saying Street Fighter 2 is overrated? I grew up at that time and I have to say that at that time, SF2 was innovative and groundbreaking that it created a new genre by itself. It was intuitive and varied to appeal to many a player. It deserves its accolades.
Comparing it to later genre games is improper. Its like saying a Prius is much better than a T model Ford.
Mortal Kombat is overrated. The finishing moves were way too hard and complicated for no reason.

From what I did see before the combat drove me away also was the game is a great RPG but that combat was HORRIBLE. First time I've ever stopped playing a game that interested me cause of one aspect of it.

I'd rather have a mix of both handcraft and random. With Random its always something new and different.

Still have yet to play DA: O, but as for Bethesda not on combat its pretty bland also imo. Wish games would at least take Dark Messiah route or even goes as far as M&B for combat.

Key words "at the time". People today still cling on to the idea that SF2 is the best fighting game when it's simply not true. It has not really aged that well honestly. It's quite pathetic for how many years it was at EVO and Tougeki and still is.
Played it hated it. I found it very boring and the bug, glitch, whatever you call it didn't help matters.
Maybe the next one will be good the franchise is due for a good one.

Name a game that DOESN'T have glitches, bugs, whatever's. Seriously, every game now requires one, and most games this year (except Skyward Sword) had a day one patch. o.O Calling a game out on that for this reason is lackluster.
My games which I think are overrated:
Post-Cataclysm WoW
Halo series
Post Black-Ops Call of Duty.
