Working through my backlog of games and after finishing Disgaea, I've started the much praised The World Ends With You for DS. I'm currently very close to the beginning (Chapter 1, Day 2 I believe) but I'm finding that I'm not especially great at the battles. Even fighting the chump noise, I'm typically finishing with a C ranking. I've already died a handful of times.
So, I'm hoping to improve a bit in my battle technique. Any tips or strategies?
Well, at first I had the same problem with the game. I couldn't focus on controlling the top screen character while I was scratching across the DS with the stylus on the bottom screen. So first thing I did was set the computer to AUTO but I think there was a setting where I could use the d-pad for manual, which eventually means you just learn to hit the right or left arrow a ton of times in a row. At first, you should definitely focus on the bottom screen guy.
I don't know if you are far in enough to get the easy difficulty but once you get that you won't have a problem. I think it probably comes at the end of Chapter 1 though. You get all the difficulties throughout the storyline.
Other then that, since you're at the beginning of the game you won't have good pins to use, so just make use with what you have and try to just concentrate on learning the bottom screen attacks.
I haven't played it in months so I can't give you a better description, I'm working form memory, but the bosses get hard pretty fast even on Normal. Good thing is that it doesn't matter how many times you die you just replay the boss, and I think it even lets you tone down the difficulty when you die.
Game has a cool soundtrack though.

I'm bad at magic, you're bad at magic, and Level 4 Pro Ari Lax is terrible at magic.
The learning curve can be steep, but the second battle screen can usually be mashed through with Left, Left, Left. (Pray you match Shiki's cards like a pro/lucksack.) You should probably focus on the lower screen and getting your way through as Neku. Also, don't underestimate healing pins early on. Use them wisely, of course, because if you're suffering on the top screen, you need to make sure that you can compensate on the bottom screen by avoiding damage as much as you can.
Save often. If you need to, drop the difficulty to Easy (though do note that pin drops will vary based on difficulty, so you might not get the ones you want). Don't worry too much about top-screen combos, because while getting combo attacks will be key in keeping you alive in crucially difficult matches, you should focus on making it through. Rank shouldn't matter to you too much, as long as you're accruing experience and using various equipments to boost your battle performance.
