I'm very excited. No pre-order, but I've got a reservation down at my local PC game shop and will pick it up ASAP. I'm just glad my paycheck comes right at the same time (and right in time for my bills too :-/).
I'm really tempted to go Death Knight, but I already have 3 toons and am very hesitant to go more, as it'll really split up what little time I have for the game between my toons. I like how DKs are made to DPS and Tank at the same time (self-healing by dealing damage), but I don't look forward to suddenly finding Orgrimmar filled with them despite the 1-DK-per-server-per-account limit. It's like Blood Elves once Burning Crusade came out.
My real concern is my lv. 69 Rogue main who came to Outland very late and high level. Continue with OL or head off to Northrend?
I've preordered and I'm looking forward to it. I started playing after the launch of BC, so I didn't get to experience the collective excitement of exploring new content.
Regarding classes, my main has been an undead warlock (on Zul'jin) for the longest time, but I'm switching to mage in the expansion. I still love warlock, but the new playstyle of frost mage is very appealing to me. So many instant cast procs. I always loved affliction warlock for the instant casts and the mobility that they enable in pvp, but mage is now capable of the same thing only with utility that is more interesting and dynamic to me. I'm also really attracted to summons, and between improved water elemental, it's glyph, and mirror image (YES!), I should be capable of keeping a minion up most of the time.
Of course I'm going to roll a Death Knight as well. I'm planning on going deep unholy with a touch of blood. As far as races go, I'm torn between blood elf and orc. I prefer the looks of blood elf, but I like the orcs racial abilities for an unholy DK (they are pretty much perfect for the class). I'll probably choose Blood elf in the end. I despise the gargantuan sholders that orc armor has, and I don't want to spend hours stairing at some dude running around my screen with giant freaking roofing tiles for sholderpads.
My only concern for DK, is that I am honestly not very good at melee in pvp. I'm very solid when it comes to casting, but I have a hard time staying on top of a good and evasive player in melee, while still maintaining an ideal damage rotation. I'm hoping that some of DK's unique tools will help that. I'm also undecided as to what primary professions to give Duskmourne (my dk). My mage has inscription and enchanting, and I would rather not have the same on my DK. I also already have a miner and herbalist, so I may go alchemy/blacksmith.
Regarding 3.0
It's been fun as hell. I loved the zombie invasion event. A friend whispered "I just saw a 70 zombie outside org!", so I ran from Undercity to the zep to investigate, and I saw four level 70 zombies. I charged them and was whirlwinding them to death, but then, I suddenly became zombie. "What the hell?" was my only response, then the zombies started talking back to me. Only then did I realize what was going on. (this was in the very begining of the zombie invasion and no one had a clue) Those innitial hours of the zombie event were some of the coolest times I've had in wow. I feel the game would greatly benifit from more unpredictable events such as this, but we all know how messy it got near the end. I was constantly disconnected at Shatrath due to massive ammounts of undead. It was still a badass event though.
The only real problems I have with Wow, in general, is that Bliz still haven't figured out a way to deal with AFK'ers in battlegrounds. They should work harder at fixing this. It's tacky and harmful to the game. That, and lazy people rely far too much on the same lazy catch phrases. I.E. saying "QQ!" and "STFU" are suddenly a valid replacement for intelligent arguments.
The first problem has an easier fix than you might imagine (but it is ruthless), and the second problem is a social one, and has nothing to do with the game itself.
So, overall, things are fine.
Edit: @Seph. I'm afraid you may not get to play a death knight right away. You said your best character was a 49 mage, but I believe you are required to have a character at 60 in order to create a Death Knight.

<- 5 lvl 70s (2 of which are paladins).
I'll be adding a DK to that soon, I want to see what all the fuss is about.
Sharahazad: From what I've been hearing, Orc is the best choice if you plan on mainly doing pve. Expertise is vital for death knights.
However, aesthetics > racial abilities, honestly. I'll be making a female undead death knight myself, and I reserved the name Shauku on Tichondrius already

I think the event could have been handled better, but all in all I had fun at that time. More or less, it pretty much captured what a zombie plague outbreak would be like, as based on the George Romero mythos, or even capturing the horror of something sacred sickeningly zombified (like Marvel comics Marvel Zombies). I heard stories of Tirion Fordring being zombiefied, and I once saw all of Thrall's bodyguards infected.
So, overall, things are fine.
For 3.0.X, I admit my only perspective is rogue and mage, but I think the changes were for the better, with rebalances, talent tree changes, questing changes, etc. They streamlined and simplified a lot of stuff, and some changes did make you say "huh?" but you got to appreciate them after.
The big change I saw that I really liked was how the Mage talent trees for Fire and Frost were made more interactible and synergetic with each other and Arcane tree. It's now much easier and more fun to mix up the talents with spells.
Edit: @Seph. I'm afraid you may not get to play a death knight right away. You said your best character was a 49 mage, but I believe you are required to have a character at 60 in order to create a Death Knight.
It's level 55 actually. 1 DK per server where you have at least 1 toon that's level 55. IIRC, you can play on a max of 5 servers, so that's a total of 5 DKs, but that's over-the-top already.
Don't get me wrong: I don't mean everyone should limit their toons to as few as possible. If making a ton of toons is your game, have fun!
It's just my experience: I played an online RPG prior to WoW where I maxed out the number of toons I could make. I didn't like thinking "I should be working on toon X now instead of this guy, though this guy is more fun".
So, when I got into WoW, I kept only to toons (races and classes) I was sure of enjoying and decided to focus just on them.
I'll be adding a DK to that soon, I want to see what all the fuss is about.
You can try looking up their abilities and playing around with their talent trees online. Not the same as direct experience, but it gives a good starting picture. This is what is tempting me to play DK.
However, aesthetics > racial abilities, honestly. I'll be making a female undead death knight myself, and I reserved the name Shauku on Tichondrius already
I'm tempted to go Tauren Frost DK with a little Blood myself.

Actually, you can play on any number of servers So X Death Knights, where X is the number of servers you can get a 55+ on!
I'll be rolling a Death Knight to level up with my brother who will level our druid to 80. Should be fun levelling 60-70 in Outlands again with 5 Death Knight instance groups ("LF Healer Plzzzzz" will go out across Outlands like a plague :-/).
At launch you can only make one on a server you have a 55+ on already. They said they are going to open it up later, though. No server limit to the best of my knowledge, though.
My only issue with handling AFK'ers is that someone who is basically AFK (hiding somewhere but not actually leaving the keyboard) looks to the game almost exactly the same as someone guarding a node.
I enjoyed the zombie invasion event; particularly since I ended up teaming up with 2 Rogues I and had a blast tanking the elites with my Gorilla. In the course of less than an hour I got 90 of those necrotic runes, which was enough to get all the novelty trinkets and the leather epic gloves (which are better itemized than the mail ones, big surprise ).
The plague event was horrible, though, especially near the end when it was pretty much impossible to get cured before the disease timer was up. Giving people the opportunity for same-side griefing was a bad idea.
I haven't decided what race my Death Knight is going to be. I currently have a hole that would be best filled by a female troll, but I wouldn't have to give up much to make a male or female undead, either. Ally side, I plan on Draenei male (when they open up cross-server DK creation).
I have "Cleese" reserved for my Ally server, and managed to find a server to reserve "Gafgarion" on.

Orc's make for serious death knights from what I've heard as well. On top of the expertese, they get a solid attack bonus racial and lower stun duration for pvp. I've heard that ghouls are serious buisness for an unholy death knight, and the +5% damage to minion isn't too shabby.
But blood elf females look so cool in DK armor, they also have some damn fine racials (especially for tanking a magic boss) and I think that their active racial adds runic power, which is awesome. I believe aesthetics will win out in the end though. I have four 70's and I've never regretted missing out on a racial ability, but I have regretted having a character who I don't like the looks of.
Edit: I like that name, Shauku. It remindes me of Shukaku.
@Shaharazad:
They actually made Mirror Image terrible, so don't get excited. Last time I checked the images do about 200~ per frost bolt, 300~ per fire blast, and the kicker; They cast polymorph randomly. This means that randomly your targets will be healed.
"If I do go to heaven, I'll smack god across the face and tell him to get me a grilled-cheeses sandwhich and then say 'Yea what now god!? Say some'in! I dare you!' "
Last I heard, though, it was on the GCD, which makes it not worth using. As for the axe expertise, I know that DKs will be using the sword they start with for a very long time; if memory serves it's on par with blues you wouldn't expect until Outlands. I've always liked swords better than axes anyways, but that's a matter of preference, really. Polearms are probably my favorite, though (being a Hunter and all).
I would be surprised if polymorph didn't get removed from Mirror Image. Sounds like a bug.
Last I heard, though, it was on the GCD, which makes it not worth using.
As of 3.0.3, not anymore. Even when it was still on GCD, I kept using it for my Orc Rogue. It adds a lot of AP even at the high levels.

It shouldn't be too much of an issue. Some people say the weapon racials don't really give much of an advantage (though I'm of the every-advantage-you-can-get school). Besides, by the time you leave the Scarlet Enclave, you'll be wielding your choice of Sword or Axe. For that matter, they allow maces now for DKs.
I would be surprised if polymorph didn't get removed from Mirror Image. Sounds like a bug.
Nuts. That's one spell I'm looking forward to. Hope it's fixed by the time my Mage gets there.
Regarding classes, my main has been an undead warlock (on Zul'jin)
I used to be in Affinity on Zul'Jin alliance side about a year ago.
My main concern with the xpac is Blizzard is increasing everyone's DPS, but when everyone can DPS, why bring a Rogue?
It stands to reason that there is a point where a Rogue's DPS would solely be >= another classes DPS + their other utility (off-tank, off-heal, crowd control, etc.), but will that point exist?
As of right now, my Warrior friend can do more DPS then my Rogue friend (I pretty much out gear them all so I can't use myself as a comparison) with worse gear. Titan's Grip + max hit seems to be (from my admittedly little information) really damn good. Will this hold up at 80? Hopefully not, but Blizzard's track record isn't that great, and the time they take to patch in fixes is disgusting.

As far as I heard with MI, it does the following (comment courtesy of WowHead)
Mirror Image:
- Copies you character with all details (hair, gears, even if you use noggenfogger, they will copy the skeleton or small size)
- Copy also the same stats and buffs as you have (so if you arcane power, they will be affected by arcane power, too)
- If you ran away too far from copies you will be blinked back to them
- If you attacking 2 or more targets, mirror images will Hex (chicken) one of them for a short period of time
- They attack same target as you, and follow you always - the only way they behave, and only way to control them
- They cast low level frostbolts, average damage from bolt registered 800-900
They also say you get blinked back to another image if you run away from the main group, which may or may not be a bug.
Edit: Well, it isn't exactly a patch but they are certainly taking forever to fix the mail system.
The thing that bothers me that they hotfix 'bugs' that benefit the players. Easy money, easy bosses, easy gear, etc. But game-stopping class imbalances and even simply small, annoying things ofte have to wait for the next major update patch.
All of those "Fixed a bug with..." patch notes should be patched in the next Tuesday after they are fixed, not in a few months for the next major patch. Large content patches are for new content, not bug fixes.

Realizing how bad the lag will be in Northrend, I think I'm going to quest in OL for a week or two for awhile, until the servers are stable enough and the Northrend population settles down a litte.
And I thought the Scourge Invasion hitting Orgrimmar (and Stormwind) was bad!
My main concern with the xpac is Blizzard is increasing everyone's DPS, but when everyone can DPS, why bring a Rogue?

My guildies were guessing we're going to see 4 DKs/1 healer parties.
They did tone down Retribution for Paladins, but I share your concerns as a Rogue player. I'd like to think that if everyone can DPS with 3.0.x and WotLK, Rogues can DPS even more, but if that's not the case, then you can be sure Rogue players will still play Rogue for the heck of it. Still, that's something Blizz has to address badly.
Yeah. it's been what, 11 hours and my server still isn't up and I am not happy in the slightest.
Humorously, my realm is up, but I have no mail still. The funny part is apparently the S2 vendor is selling her wares... without cost. It's a madhouse in there.

I think the main reason I never play my shaman anymore is because I made it a male tauren. I hate the giganticness of him
Edit: I like that name, Shauku. It remindes me of Shukaku.
I meant to spend today finishing off fishing, but the server issues put paid to that. Maybe tonight, though, if we don't do Black Temple...
Going to be in "line" at 8:30pm tomorrow, I think. I just want in and out so I can stay up all night. kek

Sounds cool, but crazy in pvp
No kidding. Like today, for example.
Though I'll put it in a small font.

And I thought the Scourge Invasion hitting Orgrimmar (and Stormwind) was bad!
???
I'm at work. I play on US Central time zone servers. "Server not up"- what's happening now?

Humorously, my realm is up, but I have no mail still. The funny part is apparently the S2 vendor is selling her wares... without cost. It's a madhouse in there.
Put your mind at rest - I leveld a DK on Lich King in beta and was able to do 5 DK parties through OL instances. No need for healers.
I think the main reason I never play my shaman anymore is because I made it a male tauren. I hate the giganticness of him
