I've seen the full series of Fullmetal Alchemist, Yet to see the movie The Conquerer of Shamballa (Ishballa?) and i heard of this new story, spawned that apparently continues the story. however upon seeing the first Episode (in Japanese since it's supposed to be translated in English during Spring of 2010) It seems to not be a continueation of the storyline, but instead it interjects itself into the middle of the storyline, *Warning Spoilers*
Before Alphonse and Edward discover the fact that the Furor is in fact a Homunculus, and lust and her Crew are still manipulating people to further their cause
*Maes Hughes Dies
My question, is anyone whose seen them both, can you elaborate on exactly where the storyline gets cut and inserted, for personal interest, so i can Watch it in chronological order?
Either That or, give me a reasoning why it's not a good idea to interject the original story of Fullmetal with the Brotherhood. Since Upon watching the First episode of Brotherhood, it seems that Colonel Maes Hughes hasn't yet *See Spoiler* Met them, and further that plotline.

Actually, as far as I can tell(I've only watched a few episodes of Brotherhood), FMA:B is just a retelling of the original series, with slight variations. I was *really* disappointed to determine this, because I loved the original series, and was stoked to find out that there was another.
well i need to see them both now, Upon seeing the Wikipedia article on it (at wiki.org) it seems that they do retell alot of the story, with variations. At least so far. but i also was under the impression that brotherhood was more "let go" and/or less censored. more gory and to the point. I can see that in the first episode of FMA:B they show more blood, which is rarely seen in Japanese Turned American anime. the only other ones i've seen (I dont watch all of them, a particular few caught my eye and i like) are Bleach and InuYasha

I tried to watch InuYasha at one point, but there are just so many episodes that it's ridiculous, and the cost of some of the seasons on DVD is absolute nonsense.
FMA:B is definitely less censored than the original. But honestly, Japanese Anime is typically alot less censored than american versions, it just has to be toned down alot to be released here. That's probably why they don't have American versions of FMA:B yet, just Japanese with subtitles.
Yes, and thats one thing i fear with the conversion of FMA:B to English, Just what will they kill from the storyline. Using blood as a source for a Ice Alchemic reaction is Genius! Tbh I'm More curious if the Japanese Version of the Original has any more reference to Roze being Raped by the Military than just saying it happened (Not that i'm more intrigued by that type of violence, but it would put more Oomph into the storyline) and yes. I'm a Perv. Deal

I haven't seen the new FMA anime yet, but the first series caught up with the manga about halfway through and instead of waiting for the manga, they just made up the second half of the series, causing it to be completely different from the manga.
The new anime is made to follow the manga more closely, so you'll get the see the story the way it was supposed to be.
This.
FMA: Brotherhood was made to follow the manga so it will include Prince Xing, The real other Homonculus, The little chinese girl (forgot the name) and her panda and alot of other things.
The first FMA was messed up because they created their own story when they caught up with the manga. Hopefully, FMA: Brotherhood will have the exact contents of the manga as the manga looks like it would end soon.
I tried watching the first episode of the new series a while back. I found it to be too ridiculous and over the top for my tastes though. I mean seriously its only the first episode and someones making a giant killer glacier the size of a city? really?
For those who watched the first series and were disappointed by the first episodes of the second series, please stay watching.
FMA-B after a certain point (the Lab incident and the Greed storyline) goes off on a completely different direction and is well-worth watching. I happen to read the manga and find it far more exciting than the original series. Bad Guys more compelling, more interesting plot lines, etc etc.

I love Joboman, Poggy, Niv, and Vezok, because, while they may not be the best players, they still try to win. Having fun is the most important thing to a game, but I've learned that if you don't try to win, then you're ruining everyone else's fun.

I completely agree.
At first, I thought FMA:B wasn't as good as the original anime series, but I was eventually proved wrong right around the lab incident point as well.

As someone said before, Brotherhood is closer to the manga, both in story and even in how it is animated.
The big shift in story is around where the second half of the original anime began, around the first time they reach Rush Valley. The differences before that point aren't as large.
The characterization is pretty different, too. If you were a fan of the manga at any point, you should enjoy Brotherhood.

All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the light that you see. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the peace that you feel. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to fill your heart on my own.
But the rainbow is an image of hope for many reasons, as it is a brilliant sight coming out of oftimes dismal weather.
I would start at episode 12, if you want to watch the new series and don't want to watch the first few episodes. (it's the same storyline in the begging, but at least a different telling of the same story)
Episode 12 starts where Ed/Al search for Izumi, and where the series really branches off. There are differences in earlier episode, and the "1st series" storyline still goes for a bit, but I would say 12 would be best. Especially because the Homunculus begin to be introduced in-depth in episode 13, and that's the first major break from the old/new series.
I would say, though, that even if you've watched the first series, start the second one from the beginning. The series itself has a different tone, especially in some of the familiar "major moments" from the first series that are shared. It may not be the best to start away from the beginning, if for no other reason than that tone.
The manga is 100,000x better than the original anime (which I loved), so, it goes without saying I love FMA: B.
Here's my problem with FMAB right now: right now, it has a tone that reminds me of episodes 80-140 of Inuyasha, where it was really ended up just being stories from different wandering groups and interspersed "side quests". I haven't read the manga, but I've heard that if there is one complaint about it, it's this.
bradleyjx- based off of what I saw in Episode 28 recently...
The power that Father beholds seems to be such that the Elric brothers really have a lot of research/questing to do yet before they can fathom a solution to the Father/Homonculus situation. So if the manga takes a little side trek, i wouldn't mind. They still haven't shown us Wrath yet, which is a big deal. Furthermore, Hohenheim has to figure into it all again at some point.
I did notice Ling became Greed, or more Greed became Ling. Either way, i see that Ling vs Bradley as two King Homoculus of their country can have some fun interplay, with Ling gaining control of his body in the future as a real possibility, and thus evening some of the power distribution between Good and Bad sides.
Hope Ling makes it, he was freakin awesome.

Guess I'll have to try this out. I've only watched the original series, which I thought was fantastic. I remember reading on the Wiki page awhile back that the story for it branched away from the manga during some of the later episodes because it caught up with it. I guess I felt like I enjoyed the sense of resolution you get from the original series though...I mean, everything gets wrapped up in the end, and I do think that characterizations were extremely well done, even especially for the content that they did outside of the manga (ie. dante and hohenheim's body swapping, which I am not sure is in the manga or not).
I did find the part at the end about the "parallel worlds" to be a bit contrived, and I despised the "Conquerer" movie that followed. Either way I'll have to watch this new stuff to see how they have done with it.
