Thought I'd finally start my own thread here. I'm a fan of D.C., Marvel, Darkhorse, and most third party publishers. Among my favorite villains are Dr. Doom, the Joker, and Venom. Favorite heroes include Spiderman, Batman, and the Flash.
I'm a big comic book fan who has recently lent out some of my graphic novels/tradepapers to my gf to read. I have a couple of the marvel 2099 issue number 1's and currently has a secret wars issue on layaway for $27. the issue where spiderman gets the black suit.

Ah, a classic legend. The venom symbiote takes over Peter Parker, of which he soon rejects. It finds it's way to Eddie Brock,
and thus the birth of VENOM!!!!!
i like obscure/indepenant comics:
Witchblade
Darkness
Necromancer
Hunter-Killer
Shrugged
Painkiller Jane
the only 'mainstream' comics i like are the Runaways (Marvel) and old Batman Beyond (DC).
i don't like jumping into the middle of a series and having to try to find the rest of the series to catch up. (i did with the Runaways and Witchblade, though. :p)

I don't like DC as much as I do Marvel. DC's characters always seem too "goody, goody" for my liking, and the characters appear to be rather black and white, without a lot of depth. Maybe I should investigate them more, but I've never really caught onto Batman (although Batman Returns is amazing, and his villains are cool), and Superman is one of the most overated characters of all time, period.
Actually, if you don't like DC's top tier titltes becuase of the "goody-two-shoes" factor, check out some of thier other stuff. For instance, the title character of Manhunter is anything but a flat, oine dimensional character. She does have a strong sense of justice, but she's a very flawed an nuanced character who doesn't know how to be a mother and coulld really care less about bringing the bad guy in in one piece. It's actually one of my favorite title coming out today. It's defeintely different than alot of DC's better known stuff.

DC's Vertigo imprint has some of the best titles on the market today, such as 100 Bullets, Fables, and Y The Last Man. Not to mention they've put out the excellent Preacher and Sandman tales. The mainstream portion of DC still puts out some quality titles currently like All-Star Superman and All-Star Batman. The Alex Ross painted series Justice going on currently is gorgeous to look at as well.
Marvel, as always, keeps things interesting (and while I slightly favor them overall versus DC, it's still very close). Their current Civil War main title is AMAZING. It's one of the best books of any publisher in the last decade hands down. All the spin-offs are pretty average for the most part, but the main book is a must read. Other ridiculous titles being published by Marvel are The Ultimates 2,Astonishing X-Men, and The Incredible Hulk.
Both companies right now are doing amazing things. This is probably the overall best time quality-wise, since the silver age back in the sixties for comics. In comparison to the utter crap that was shoveled out throughout the '90's, these current titles are like God's gift to man.

You ever see V for Vendetta? That's D.C. Hardly any goody goody justice in that, though V doesn't have much of a background. That's what he's supposed to be all about though.... I favor D.C. just a tiny bit more.

Everyone who even remotely has an interest in comics needs to check out Ultimates 2 #12 which hit shelves today. It is one of the most amazing comics I have read in my lifetime, and will probably be one of the most remembered books from this time period. This issue especially, was just flat-out jaw-dropping. You may have to read the full series to get the full impact, but even casual readers who just pick up this issue will find a lot to love.
Lots of other good stuff came out today as well, like Ultimate Spider-Man #100 and Eternals #4. Amazing Spider-Man #535 was one of the best issues in a while as well. Really good week for Marvel in general.

Couldn't agree more. The Ultimates 2 12's one of the best payoff's I've ever read.
I expected the Ultimates to kick the Liberators' asses, but I didn't expect it to be so brutal. Rest in pieces, Liberators. Soooo many good parts -the Hulk's total ownage of the Abomination ("Can you tell Hulk the secret forumla for COCA-COLA?" :p), Quicksilver's long-overdue, incredibly cool kick-ass moment when he takes out Hurricane, Iron Man 6 raining drunken death from above, Captain Britain and co.'s Clark Kent infiltration move, Janet's (literally) really big moment, Pym's orders to the Ultrons to turn on the Liberators and the Ultrons' reaction, Cap's entire fight with al-Rahman, and Wanda finally doing something useful by bringing in Thor...geez, issue 13 can't get here soon enough.
That said: I agree, I wouldn't recommend reading it unless you've read the rest of the series, or it's really not going to carry as much impact as it could for you. There's a damn good reason this issue's titled "The Avengers," and without knowing what brought about said avenging, I doubt a new reader will appreciate it as much.
That said: The Ultimates vol. 1 is readily available in two trades and an oversized hardback, the first part of the The Ultimates 2 is available in a trade, and the issues that comprise the second part of The Ultimates 2 (except for 13, which isn't out yet) aren't too expensive or difficult to locate, so stop reading this and get out there and get 'em and read 'em!
Anyone else keeping up with the marvel's civil war story arc?
Yes, actually, and I have very mixed feelings about it. The concept is solid and when it' s good, it's good. But, there's a lot of character interaction that just seems out of place.
It doesn't make me uncomfortable that some characters act comepletely differently than they have before; however, it does bug the crap out of me that the main book gives no reason for this and it's up to the crossover titles to show us the why. If anything, a lot of the crossover issues HAVE been stellar though, so even if they can't write an ending to clean up spme of the main book's problems, I can say I look foward to the consequences of what comes out of this.
At the very least, I haven't dropped this after one issue like I did with House of M.
One criticism of the book that I see get tossed around alot that I don't think is quite right is that Millar's just writing the Ultimate versions of these characters and not the 616 versions. I can see the out-of-character complaints at least but anyone who calls them ultimate characterizations has never actually read the ultimates (or at least not carefully anyways). The only one who seems cloose to his ultimate characterization is Cap. Even then there are small differences (just read the lastest issue of ultimates to see what.) So until an actual, non-cloned hero kills someone in a fight, I'm calling BS on people who claim this.
Right now though, I'm on the fence and probably won't have a definite opinion until the end of the series.

walking dead? that's by kirkman right?
i just finished reading the marvel zombies hardcover. it was good! never thought plaguish zombies like that could be so entertaining.
i think i'll be looking for the walking dead series..
i'm also not entirely sold by marvel's civil war. i think the following issues for each of the respective books would seal the deal for me. i just know somehow, someway, they'll try and undo the damages being done. i hope though, that they make it permanent.
comic books are for imature children that have nothing better to do with there time... looks down at his signature... Anyways I started re-reading transmet today. Love that book. So many great foul one liners.

all right, my first actual reply to a post on here and it's about comics and not magic. go figure. i've been into comics since i was 8 years old and i'm 24 now. i just can't get enough of 'em. here's my current pull list:
ultimate spidey
ultimate x-men
ultimate fantastic four
ultimates 2 (can't wait for ultimates 3 w/ jeph loeb and joe madureira)
uncanny x-men
x-men (i'm loving mike carey on this series)
walking dead (this series owns all)
amazing spidey
astonishing x-men
civil war
batman
exiles
JLA (i just started this series w/ the recent relaunch. not really that into DC (obviously), but i thought i'd give it a chance)
allstar batman and robin (when it decides it wants to come out)
i'm also looking forward to the new wildcats series from grant morrison and jim lee.
i know i just started here, but i think it'd be awesome if the comic fans of the site started a clan or something for comic discussions amongst us. just a thought.
i collect comics casually, since they aren't really sold in mexico, but i have a couple of wolverines, ultimate fantastic fours, the first two civil war comic books (got them on a trip to the us, and would apreciate if someone via PM would bring me up to date from the second one forward)
i also found on a flee market 3 comics that drove me nuts:
-a very old wolverine, in which it ends with the wedding invitation
-a not-so-old wolverine, didn't like it much
-the spanish version of the comic in which the dark phoenix is introduced in the fantastic four... got it for the equivalent of a buck
i also have the v for vendetta book, loved it, and the house of m and decimation books, and i liked them too

random, useless knowledge:
if we could line up every person that lives in china, and try to reach the last one walking, we would never be able to do it, because of it's demographic growth would get bigger and bigger and we could not be able to reach the end
