The Hobbit easily takes it for me. It is much less convulted than the others, and it has a more exciting plot.

The Hobbit was good, but the sheer magnitude and scope of Lord of the Rings pushes it over the top for me. The Silmarillion was boring as hell, though it did have interesting parts spread throughout (though quite few and far between).

Also, I feel compelled to inform you that there's one novel of his that your list is missing: Roverandum. It probably wouldn't get any votes, but I like it all the same.
The Silmarillion, I like the whole story, fun to read and easy names to remember.

The Silmarillion is great and all, but it's just moving too fast IMO. I mean, all the hobbit, and so is LotR, are one year each (story-wise.) The Sil. on the other hand, is what, something like 3000 years? Waay too fast.
My favorite book is The Two Towers (because of helms deep!!!) in Lord of the Rings which i voted for but after reading the Hobbit for summer reading i guess it's my second fav

With out a doubt, the Sil is the best. HTe conflicts are on a much larger scale, Beren-Luthien>Aragorn-Arwen, Turambar is one of the most tragic things you'll ever read, and Feanor and Fingolfin are great. the characters are better, the plot is better, everyhting is pretty much better.
p.s. notice I only put the long novels.
