Just try to know what you're talking about when you insult it. Blind generalizations can be annoying sometimes.
Take my antidote:
Quote from The Fallen Evincar »
Well, like I said, I convert people everyday...
If you're into poetic lyrics, underground rap is one of the most creative and productive musical genres in America right now, rap has an almost invisible border with poetry at times.
Here's the list of artists I tell people to try out that usual converts them, I've converted many:
Aesop Rock-
Abstract, poetic lyrics, really creative and eccentric, acquired taste. Download "Daylight" and "Freeze" for a taste.
Sage Francis-
An actual poet turned rapper, labeled as an emo-rapper at times because he actually has emotion in his lyrics, also has a rock band. Check out "Slow Down Gandhi", "Makeshift Patriot", and "Agony In Her Body"
Ditto on other poet/rappers such as Buck 65, Mos Def, Josh Martinez and more.
Immortal Technique-
Best political artist of any genre out there right now, and most controversial. Check out his masterpiece "Dance With the Devil". Seriously. Download it NOW. "The 4th Branch" and "The Cause of Death" are also nice.
Brother Ali-
Charismatic, Muslim African American albino...His solo debut was unbelievably amazing. Check out "Forest Whitaker", "Shadows On the Sun", and "Room With a View"
Yeah, that list usually converts everyone, I've gotten quite a few, Chucklez, Butte, and more.
And I've certainly forgotten and haven't put up a great deal of other worthy artists too, Deltron 3030, MF Doom, etc.
Though what you like or don't like on that list often depends on what sort of rock or music you currently like.
I.E., Metal fans often like more of Non-Phixion and Immortal Technique, some fans of this and that are more attracted to different subgenres in rap.
And there's plenty, plenty, tons of rappers I didn't name that are still great, but oh well. *Shrug*
Nas is underground in my world (kidding). My definition of "party song" is very different from the the popular or expected one. It deals mosr about where and when the song is listened to than what the song sounds like.
As in "promoted poorly" I mean either the artist, producer, or fans choose not to bring the artist into the mainstream. Poorly means a loss of a leg on the "great tripod".

Well, you make it sound like it's a negative thing to be in the underground, and that the underground consists of rappers not skilled enough to make it in the mainstream, which is a glaring mistake.
To quote Immortal Technique, all going Platinum means is "A lot of people were stupid as ****".
And yes, I guess your definition of "party song" does differ, basically encapsulating all of mainstream rap and rendering the term meaningless.

The great tripod is not all great. Underground music is a great thing for it keeps the demand on past and future artist low by allowing a starting point away from the formulas and factories.
Party songs tend to be mainstream because they are listened to by many people at once often. They demand less active focus than nonparty songs, are catchy, displayed often, discourage rare ideas, and are easily enjoyed while not paying less attention.
It's all part of the rules thing I've been spewing.

And do you mean best artists ever, or literally groups, not single artists? If you mean groups...
D12 Non-Phixion D-Block The Beastie Boys Hieroglyphics Mobb Deep Outkast
I must disagree with this highly (see that, not just disagreeing, but disagreeing highly). Public Enemy A Tribe Called Quest Eric B. and Rakim NWA Beastie Boys De La Soul and of course you cannot go without mentioning Run DMC
As you can see my preference lies mainly in old school. Kids these days with their hoes and thier bling blang. But I dont want to get into an argument with TFE about rap...Ive seen what he does to people when they get him angry...:o

Okay then, reggae is my music of choice, so its time for me to represent. I like reggae for its laid back style and smooth rythm. Its easy to listen to and is always nice and relaxing. Personally, my favorite band of all time is Sublime, their music may not be perfect, but to me every song is fantastic in its own way. And thats what good music means to me.:)

Ah, it's simply because I forgot (somehow, I go crazy sometimes. ) to list Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Run DMC, I give plenty dap to the old school, and I'm a big NWA fan, no doubt.
And silly me, I forgot the Fugees and the Mitchell Brothers as well! I must've written it pretty quickly on the fly.
So my revised list...
D12
Non-Phixion
D-Block
The Beastie Boys
Hieroglyphics
Mobb Deep
The Mitchell Brothers
The Fugees
Outkast
Public Enemy
De La Soul
Run DMC
NWA
...simply shows the difference, more or less, is your lacking in the underground, which you should give a looksee sometime for the hell of it. Non-Phixion, Hieroglyphics, the Def Jux crew, and KMD come highly recommended.
Also, I hope you weren't implying the ones I listed are more orientated with bling or such rap, since absolutely none of them are really, except maybe Mobb Deep or D-Block, but even then, no, not really, they're more gangster along the lines of NWA. There aren't many bling rap groups in existence to tell the truth, save The Inc., Ruff Ryders, and G-Unit...
Nothing really to get into an arguement about.

I have to agree that Def Jux Crew, Del tha funkee homosapien (the monkeys he makes of men) and KMD are all really ****ing amazing. Now there is some quality **** in Dr. Oct and like MF DOOM. Now this is not even considering people like Dan the Automater, CEX, and Danger Mouse. Psh.

I'll respond to that actual question of the thread... the traits in music I look for are mostly in the way they are presented. I want energy and emotion, I want lyrics that speak to me, I want to feel like the artist truly had something to say and was passionate about it. I want sad songs to be able to make me cry, and happy songs to make me smile just because I'm listening to them. Things like good musicianship and good singing are important only in that they tend to convey emotion more effectively, and (especially with good singing voice) are not necessary for good music- see Bob Dylan, for example.
I'm a pretty intellectual person in real life. So I want music to get to my emotions, and if it can appeal to my intellect too, you have a winner. Hence why I like Radiohead and Pink Floyd so much.
For me, music is good if it fits one of two qualities (or both):
It's gotta be fast.
It's gotta have lyrics about real world issues. (Preferablly, leftist politically)

No. Music doesn't become bad if they don't share my political view. One or both categories fits. So if they play fast music, chances are I'll like them, although if they're extremely right-wing and it shows, I wouldn't enjoy listening to them as much. The Ramones were right wing for the most part, but didn't sing about it. A lot of the music I listen isn't even political. But for example, I enjoy listening to some hip hop such as Sage Francis and Immortal Technique, because I identify with their political beliefs.

Aside from that: I have created a formula, which indicates roughly what kind of music I need:
Degree of Music Goodness = [Number of Band Members]*[Number of Voices]*[Average Duration of One Song]*[Number of Guitarists]
When Calculating the number of Guitarists:
Bass counts x ,5
E-Guitar counts x 1,0
Acoustic Guitar counts x 1,75
Any bowed instrument counts x 2,5
You sir have just insulted every bass player that ever was. So you're saying that say Flea's bass skills are less important than Billie Joe Armstrong's guitar skills? Those numbers should be equal
