"Gary Johnson wants to be the leader of the free world. Can't name any other leaders in the free world," wrote another Twitter user, Aღanda.

Who cares? I know I can't think of a current leader, foreign or domestic, that I particularly admire. And besides, he's a libertarian, they're not exactly known for admiring government. I think it's entertaining that the main parties are still grasping at straws and scared as Johnson's popularity goes up and up.

I think it's entertaining that you think this is what's happening. The Democrats and Republicans are no more scared of Johnson than they're scared of Bigfoot. Both have an approximately equal chance of winning the election.

Which is why the only time the liberal media mentions Johnson is when he goofs, and why Obama is telling people that a vote for Johnson is just a vote for Trump. Let's face it, he's pulling votes from both sides of the aisle. In a CNN poll after the debate, when asked which candidate the debate made the respondent more likely to vote for, 47% of respondents voted Neither. If Johnson gets on the stage, he has a solid shot.

Oh no, he choked twice. God forbid we elect an actual human being instead of some political robot that just says what their advisors tell them to say.

Well, I did post an article earlier about Crooked Hillary trying to take some of his votes and with Johnson leading both of them among independents, it does look like a ripe group to target. Nevermind that he's a megalomaniac and she seriously endangered our national security and can't be bothered to apologize for it for longer than 5 seconds, Gary Johnson one time forgot where Aleppo was and that's what's really important?

I'll believe that Gary Johnson doesn't know what Aleppo is as soon as we all start believing that Obama thinks there are 57 states. It's absurd.
And as for the world leaders question, would you again re-read/re-listen to it? Because right now I feel like the only one that actually paid attention to what the question was.

Good thing he had Weld there to cover for him. The look of terror that comes over Johnson's face when he realizes he doesn't know any world leaders is hilarious. And then he tries to buy for time by repeating the question.
If Johnson gets on the stage, he has a solid shot.
I don't know how many ways I can phrase it: this is a complete fantasy. Whenever you repeat it, all it does is make you look alarmingly out of touch with reality, like an adult man describing what he wants Santa to bring him for Christmas this year. Stop wishing on a star and freaking look at how third-party candidates perform in this country. The presidential election is not a storybook. Dark-horse heroes do not come from behind to win it all because they're honest and righteous and true. They lose, badly, because their campaigns are much more poorly funded and organized, because their parties don't have brand recognition, and because most Americans who are aware of them genuinely think they're not so much "honest and righteous and true" as "nutty extremist fringe". You can believe as much as you want that this is unfair. I'm not trying to tell you that it's fair. I'm trying to tell you that it's what happens. If my dream candidate came along and ran as a third-party nominee, it would happen to him too. No matter how much I wished and hoped and yearned and talked him up on the internet.

Cool. You can be a miserable cynic and vote for some moron all you want. I'm gonna vote with my gut, and win or lose at least I'll know I did my part to try to get the actual right candidate in office instead of a lying **** or obnoxious windbag.

That's fine. I'm not saying you can't vote for Johnson. I'm saying your assessment that "he has a solid shot" is factually incorrect. Vote your conscience, but don't expect miracles.

If he can't name a world leader he admires because he doesn't admire them, that's one thing. If he can't name a world leader eh admires because he can't name them, that's something entirely different. I'd give him some measure of respect if he admitted the former, but turning it into a joke makes it look like the latter.

This.
As a Libertarian myself I cant stand Johnson. The guy is a joke and his VP is no better.
It's important to note that what Johnson/Weld has a very solid shot at is crossing the 5% threshold. That's a big step, not just in future presidential elections, but in establishing the legitimacy of Libertarians as a valid party for other positions as well.

Like that time the Reform party crossed the 5% threshold. Now we all agree they're a legitimate party.

Ljoss, the answer Johnson gave is actually more embarrassing in context than it is out of context.

getting federal campaign money is a pretty big deal.
No, it isn't, bLatch. Getting 5% of the vote is in no way a big deal, and the fact that the Libertarian party can't even get that and is making it out to be some great milestone only makes them more ridiculous.
Let's make it very clear: if you cannot manage to beat ANY of these candidates by 5%, then you don't get to claim legitimacy as a party. This list includes a man whose party affiliation is "Pirate," a Caesar St Augustine DeBuonaparte of California who is running as "Absolute Dictator;" and a person from the Constitutionalist Party of Virginia, the first two sentences of the mission statement of which are, I am not making this up, "THE CONSTITUTIONIST PARTY WILL ALWAYS BE THE GUARDIEN OF OUR GOVERNMENT!!! TO ENSURE THAT OUR NATIONAL POLITICAL SYSTEM SHALL AND WILL ALWAYS SERVE THE PEOPLE AND PROTECT OUR CONSTITUTION AGAINST ALL ENERMIES BOTH EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL."
it's obvious that nothing I say is going to convince you, so oh well. Getting federal matching funds *is* a big deal for a party, whether you think it is or not.

There is a point to be made about federal funding, but considering how much news we get from the internet/social media, major channels not mentioning the random third parties isn't the reason someone like Johnson can get 5% of the vote. Not doing anything in Congress, or having a significant pull, people looking at the party platform and the people following it. Johnson has some pretty radical ideas, and disliked by a lot of his party because he doesn't go far enough. Federal funding might be why he isn't breaking 15% (not likely), but to say crossing 5% is a big deal in the grand scheme of things doesn't really matter.
A milestone that produces significant extra funding is significant in terms of being difficult to achieve and an essential preequisite for success. It's not significant in terms of changing his chances here.
It's like saying getting into the Olympics is a significant milestone for a country. This is true, but it doesn't make it feasible that you're going to win a gold medal. It just means that you have to get in before you can even compete.
Johnson has faced almost no scrutiny because the media doesn't take him seriously. He gets almost no attention or airtime. Despite that, he's already got multiple gaffes on record. This implies that if he actually got the attention he wants, we'd see a lot more of these "Aleppo moments".
And that's generously assuming they can actually put together a real campaign in 2020. If the post-Perot reform party is any indication, they'll have a bit of trouble finding another viable candidate. Just watch a few questions from the libertarian primary debate to see what their second choices were like.

Part of the issue that came of The Reform Party is Ross Perot ran it as the Ross Perot Ego hour, and it ultimately collapsed on that schism because political parties cannot function as an extension of one person *hint, hint Trump*. Honestly their best hope is to run Bill Weld as their president next time and hope he can poach pick a decent running mate now that Gary Johnson basically gaffed himself out of the election. But yeah, there are factions within the Libertarian Party, and the faction that ran Gary Johnson (pre-getting an entire form of political gaffe named after him) is the faction that's trying to get the Libertarian Party to gain a larger stage.

Johnson's poll numbers have been sliding lately. RCP has at 5.9%, down from a high of 9.2% back in September. 538 has him at 5.7%, from a September high of 9.0%. Given that third party candidates tend to significantly underperform on election day as compared to their polls, is the dream of 5% dead?
