Counterpoint (probably playing devil's advocate here): a good deal of Trump's primary wins were won with a plurality of votes and not an actual majority. Despite this shortcoming, he would still get ALL of the delegates in certain primaries that were winner-take-all systems.
If anything, it's an institutional failure of the first past the post system.
Over time, the first-past-the-post system is subject to Duverger's Law, which incentivizes the factions grouping into two parties. With two parties, of course, a plurality and a majority are the same thing. So the problem sort of solves itself on the general stage. It just doesn't work in the primaries because the factions are different every time.

Just to be clear, I'm not condemning democracy just because of Trump specifically; both Trump and Clinton are ******* awful and each in their own ways show what a terrible election system we have.
In other words, other people like different candidates than I do, therefore the system is terrible.
Just to be clear, I'm not condemning democracy just because of Trump specifically; both Trump and Clinton are ******* awful and each in their own ways show what a terrible election system we have.
What would you prefer the election system to be like instead?
Now would be a good time to point out that our country is not actually a true democracy, but a republic. This is for a reason, as during our Founding Fathers' time, democracy actually was a word with a negative connotation, evoking images of mob rule, and they deliberately based their government around the idea of a republic to prevent the people from gaining too much power.
Now, when the connotation of democracy shifted to positive, I don't actually know. But unfortunately, now we have people criticizing our government for not being democratic enough, when in fact that was the entire point.
I personally think the shift occurred after WWII, when the themes of "good vs evil" became so strong that democracy and its meaning became a lot easier to proclaim than republicanism, which generally carries hints of elitism.
I think that, at this point, democracy and self-representation has become such a buzzword that people don't even know what the possible implications of it are.
My argument against this is that while Trump is an illustration of what the Founding Fathers pretty definitely would not want to happen, Trump's very likely failure to seize power demonstrates that we're not too far gone, as at least we're intelligent enough to see through Trump.
Which is nice, as I would REALLY like it if the American experiment continued for a substantial length of time. If we collapsed before we even hit the 300-year mark it would just be embarrassing.
I think this current election cycle is proof that-
1- The overall system works.
2- The Republican Party needs to die and rise from the ashes to form a new party that will shed itself of its white nationalist elements, accept that social conservatism is dying, and attempt to take from the Democrats its more moderate parts and prevent the rapidly strengthening liberal elements of the Democratic Party from eventually hijacking the Democratic Party in the same manner that the white nationalists hijacked the Republican Party.
Number 2 is what my political science teacher was predicting. Basically everything would lurch left soon in the political arena, although his prediction was more that the Republicans would basically collapse, Democrats take up the new right wing position, and a new left party would emerge. I'm honestly looking forward to a big shake up, the political system feels like it could use a hefty reform, this will help to accomplish that. I guess we will see what happens after the presidential election, but it seems likely something major will happen from here on out with our current parties.
make it easier for third parties to get federal funding and onto debate platforms
It's already easy for third parties to get federal funding and onto debate platforms. The fact that no third party in this country seems to be able to do that is the point. It's a reflection on the third parties.

I very much doubt that the Democratic Party will reassert its moderate positions in the near future.
Clinton has been in politics in some form or fashion for close to 30 years now. She is the definition of career politician.
And she has also gone with the liberal tide in an effort to win over the Democratic Party.
Do away with the first-past-the-post system in favor of proportional delegate winnings, make it easier for third parties to get federal funding and onto debate platforms, move to a more uniform paper ballot system, give out free voter ids to all citizens and require them for voting. That would be a tremendous start.
What do you hope to accomplish with these? What do you think will happen?

I've been thinking about this more and more, and I'm considering a situation where the Republican party doesn't collapse, but simply becomes a party that largely abandons presidential runs and focuses exclusively on congressional, governor, and other state races. Despite the dire straits the GOP is in right now, they still have a very firm grasp on governors, the House, and state legislatures.
I do not see the Republicans winning another presidential election, ever. They are already at a huge disadvantage in the electoral college due to the blue wall to begin with, but the latest fallout from this year and last year in 2012 has shown they are going to be locked out of the White House for good. Consider states like Virginia and North Carolina; both of which used to be easy wins for the GOP, are no longer safe. The former has been cemented as a permanent Democratic stronghold and the latter is a now a swing state that is probably going to lean Democrat once the state urbanizes more. Colorado is the same issue as well; massive urbanization in this century turned the state solidly blue.
And it just gets worse for them. Georgia is in danger of turning blue now. If that ever happens, the GOP is finished in the electoral college for good. Then you throw in TEXAS of all states, which Trump is just barely holding onto right now. I can definitely see a future where Texas becomes a swing state due to the increasing minority population and the amount of urbanization going on down there (see the pattern here?).
Even if the GOP tries to make a concerted effort to purge the racist and social conservative elements of the party, they are going to have a massive push back from their voting base. "Trumpists" may not make up a majority of the GOP, but they make up a sizeable chunk of the GOP base that they simply cannot ignore for risk of losing elections left and right. These people reliably vote every election cycle (which includes midterms). Evangelicals also reliably vote every election cycle in addition to the Trump supporters. In the end, it's all about votes. That's why the GOP brought these people into the party after they signed a deal with the devil to implement the Southern strategy.
The GOP is completely boxed in. They already can't win the presidency yet they feel complacent with winning downticket races. The underbelly of the party is harming them on the national stage, yet it is in their best interest to not completely cut loose those people because they need the votes. That's why the party is dying but also "not dying" at the same time if you can believe it.
Aren't the GOP in trouble with downticket races as well, once gerrymandering gets taken out of the equation? I thought the main reason they maintained a lock on Congress had to do with districting.

I am willing to bet my collection that Frozen and Solid are not on the same card. For example, Frozen Tomb and Solid Wall.
If Frozen Solid is not reprinted, you are aware that I'm quoting you in my sig for eternity?
I am reminded of a quote from Terry Pratchett: Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder.
Elves are marvellous. They cause marvels.
Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies.
Elves are glamorous. They project glamour.
Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment.
Elves are terrific. They beget terror.
The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.
No one ever said elves are nice.
Elves are bad.

Losing Virginia and North Carolina this election isn't crippling, as Iowa and Ohio are leaning Republican more. Not a good trade, but the party can survive it. The real danger would be losing Georgia, Arizona, or Texas. Especially Texas.
The simplest solution would be to find new or reclaim old voters. Muslims were once solid Republicans, but the anti-Muslim rhetoric has scared them away. Asians used to lean Republican, but the racism and the Putin love has scared them away. Hispanics could easily be part of the Evangelical bloc, but all the anti-immigration stuff is a line in the sand. The problem is, with the Trumpists, they've pushed away every minority voting group that would normally have voted GOP, but were driven away by the racism. If the party can eject the racists and begin marketing to the minority groups that are more conservative, they could pick up those groups again.
And Trump isn't? He lies pathologically, gropes women, loves Putin, makes weird threats and is ORANGE
I dunno these seem kinda minor issues compared to the clinton money laundering business. As far as I know clinton should be in prison and not running for president.
I think if you're looking for a person to get the Republican party to set aside social conservativism and become a socially liberal, fiscally conservative party that would also bring Democrats into their fold, that person is not Donald Trump, but Bernie Sanders.
Bernie is a controversial figure within the Democratic party, and I believe his outspoken socialism would alienate many, particularly fiscally conservative Democrats.
We're talking about a man who has no morality, a man who is purely obsessed with himself and his own self gain, a man who constantly lies, who has neither the requisite knowledge to be president nor the intellectual curiosity to achieve such knowledge, and who cares nothing about the truth nor anything but his own poll numbers. We're talking about a man whose ego is paper-thin and whose temperament results in him flying off the handle if he's even slightly attacked. This is a man who has been accused of sexual assault and rape. A man who has been accused of being a con man. A man who changes his positions constantly. A man who has not only made bigoted, sexist, and racist comments, but advocated policy decisions along those lines. A man who does not understand the value of NATO, who advocates nuclear proliferation, who speaks flatteringly of Putin, who wishes to infringe on the First Amendment to make it easier to sue those who speak out against him, who promotes unconstitutional policies, and who refuses to accept the will of the American vote.
Minor issues? ******* really?
Clinton is corrupt, is a liar, and is to many the embodiment of all that is wrong with Washington. I can understand this position. Trump's still worse.

I don't see how the GOP can get those voters back. Typically when you lose a voting block it is lost for good.
Democrats learned this back in the 60s when they came out and supported the Civil Rights Act. Racist whites like Strom Thurmond and George Wallace permanently left the party and Democrats lost the South for good. The GOP took advantage of this and essentially hijacked the South by welcoming these people into their party. Those whites never went back to the Democratic party, ever. Though I'm sure Democrats are glad that didn't happen...
The GOP will be facing a similar situation with minorities. In fact, they're already there with black voters. Republicans have lost black voters permanently and they overwhelmingly vote Democrat every single election. Hispanics and Asians will follow suit. No amount of trying to reclaim old voters will undo the damage that has been done. Even if they successfully get rid of the racists those people still won't be convinced that the GOP has reconciled.

And when the Democrats lost the South, it went to the Republicans. And when the Republicans lost the black vote, it went to the Democrats. In a two-party system, voter preferences are a game of ping-pong. Predicting that the GOP is never going to be a viable party again ever is essentially predicting that the Democrats are never going to alienate another voting bloc again ever. Which seems just a little bit optimistic (or pessimistic, depending).

You see it as optimistic/pessimistic. I see it as realistic.
Whoever wants to become the GOP nominee for president in 2020 has to win over Trump supporters in some way, as well as the media they represent (Breitbart, talk radio, etc.). That person will be subjected to a brutal Trump purity test where they will be mercilessly singled out as being a globalist elite if there is even one thing they don't like about him/her. DONALD TRUMP 2016
Hillary is a liar, a psychopath, as corrupt as politicians get, and will escalate conflict with Russia, which is a nuclear power. Hillary wants to bring in 3rd world immigrants from countries with average IQs in the 80s. These immigrants are coming for welfare that is payed by your taxes, they are increasing crime rates both property and VIOLENT crime, they are voting for left-wing, big government policies that will ruin the economy. Hillary wants to continue involving America in the conflicts in Syria(she wants a no-fly zone there),she is pro-war, she has voted for every military conflict that the united states has taken part that she could have voted for. Do you want to get in a nuclear war with Russia? She has defended a child-rapist and laughed at it and has attacked and silenced those who accused her husband of rape. She doesnt care about the American people, she will say anything to get elected and has changed her mind on numerous issues.
Trump on the other hand may not be perfect, but he has recieved 0 donations from special interest groups, will limit immigration, will cut your taxes, will get along with Russia, and is a more limited government candidate. If you are not convinced I reccomend you watch Stefan Molyneux's YouTube videos on the topic. The left is silencing criticism with political correctness, it is time to recieve the truth.
Make America Great Again, vote for Trump
Trump is a textbook narcissistic sociopath, with his constant self-aggrandizement, need for the adulation of others, inability to admit mistakes or accept setbacks, total disregard for the truth, and petty vindictiveness. Clinton displays far fewer warning signs of an antisocial personality disorder.
Trump only escapes this charge because he's not a politician. Rather, he's one of the people doing the corrupting. "Why was Hillary at my wedding? Because I paid her."
These immigrants are coming for welfare that is payed by your taxes, they are increasing crime rates both property and VIOLENT crime, they are voting for left-wing, big government policies that will ruin the economy.
If these immigrants are voting and receiving welfare, then they are citizens and are also paying taxes, same as you or me. (Hell, even if they're not citizens, they're paying some taxes -- the sales tax doesn't check for citizenship, to give just one example.) And no matter how many times Trump or his supporters say otherwise, the fact remains that immigrants commit statistically less crime than native-born citizens. This is a classic example of one of Trump's lies.
...he has recieved 0 donations from special interest groups...
This is so far from the truth that in fact, his campaign is willing to accept donations from foreign special interest groups. Which is totally illegal.
Which is the opposite of a selling point, because it is in neither the best interests nor the spirit of this nation of immigrants. Are you a full-blooded American Indian? No, I thought not.
In a scheme which even conservative think tanks say is fiscally irresponsible. At best, he's not actually going to do it -- he's just saying he's going to do it to buy votes among the economically ignorant.
Taking Trump at his word, we've got dramatically increased tariffs, a law-and-order crackdown, expansion of social security benefits, and a replacement of Obamacare with "something better" (not explained, of course), just for starters. How is this a limited government candidate again?

The average IQ is 100. To say otherwise is not only to be blatantly racist, but to misunderstand the meaning and purpose of IQ.
So, what, we're supposed to back down against Putin's bullying? How is turning into the world's doormat "making America great again"?
This is so far from the truth that in fact, his campaign is willing to accept donations from foreign special interest groups. Which is totally illegal.
Which is the opposite of a selling point, because it is in neither the best interests nor the spirit of this nation of immigrants. Are you a full-blooded American Indian? No, I thought not.
In a scheme which even conservative think tanks say is fiscally irresponsible. At best, he's not actually going to do it -- he's just saying he's going to do it to buy votes among the economically ignorant.
We do not want to get along with authoritarian dictators. We want to contain them. We especially do not want to get along with foreign dictators when the reason for that is President Trump's personal financial ties with said dictators and their countries. There is a word for that, and it rhymes with "schmorruption".
Taking Trump at his word, we've got dramatically increased tariffs, a law-and-order crackdown, expansion of social security benefits, and a replacement of Obamacare with "something better" (not explained, of course), just for starters. How is this a limited government candidate again?
I am not on the left, nor have I invoked political correctness once. I am silencing your criticism with facts and principles.
