Ukraine economically sucks, this is what I expected all along that this would occur.
It's what everybody expected would happen, CM, and Ukraine's economy had nothing to do with it. Nobody who was paying any attention whatsoever was under any illusions that the referendum was going to be anything but a sham.

True Stalin introduced artificial famine that cost many thousands of Ukraine lives less than a century ago. It is hard to believe that the Ukrainians want to be part of a country that inflicted genocide upon them.

Their economy couldn't afford a powerful enough military to repulse Russian encroachment, plus the Crimean ports are warm water. This is something that Russia proper lacks currently. The seizure was purely militaristic, certainly, and the vote a sham. But a sham becomes reality when you can't repulse the invasion.

Ambition must be made to counteract ambition.
Individualities may form communities, but it is institutions alone that can create a nation.
Nothing succeeds like the appearance of success.
Here is my principle: Taxes shall be levied according to ability to pay. That is the only American principle.
The unbelievable part of "95% of people on Crimea vote to join Russia" isn't that a solid amount of them would do that, it's the overwhelming majority.
Yup. Especially since 15% of Crimeans are Tatars. It's safe to say that not many of them voted. The reports of voter intimidation and simply not putting polling places in Tatar areas also bear that out.

The USSR dissolved decades ago. That's why there are so many Russian-speaking people there worried about the neo-nazis that particularly hate Russian-speakers. The unbelievable part of "95% of people on Crimea vote to join Russia" isn't that a solid amount of them would do that, it's the overwhelming majority.
I have a feeling that that many of them wouldn't have voted for that if Crimea staying a part of Ukraine had actually been an option.
