Someone recently told me about familywatchdog.org, and it has made me wonder why their is not a similar organization for those convicted of DWIs/DUIs. i think having a database that can be publicly accessed will definitely be a detterant toward thsi kind of behavior let alone it is basically attempted manslaughter every thime someone drinks and drives. Does anyone else think this is a very good idea?

Doctor, my eyes, tell me what you see. I hear their cries... just say if it's too late for me.
Doctor, my eyes...cannot see the sky. Is this the prize for having learned how not to cry?
And wow - my neighborhood looks terrible on it - 869 within the default search distance.
Update: Not too bad on a zoom in though - guess I see why our neighborhood is popular Oct 31st - as long as you stay here it's all predator free - but we're apparently ringed by abusive types once you go out about a half mile.
I checked out the local crime DB for the last 10 years before buying our house. I can tell you where the nearest Sex Offenders live. When the kids can ride their own bikes it will be a really simple conversation.
"I catch you riding your bike past ___ street, I'm taking the bike and whoopin your ass"
"Any questions?"
What would a DUI database accomplish. Are they going to have to check it when you enter a bar?

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
If you want to incentivize people to not DUI, then in increase the penalties.
The database serves no purpose.
Personally I think the penalty should include (1) AUTOMATIC Alcohol treatment program and make regular meetings (2) mandatory electronic bracelet monitoring and zero alcohol... I.e. "**** you, no drinking. Period. Ever."

This seems like a fantastic idea if you just want to encourage them to ride their bike down the street to try to figure out what the big deal is.
I would say that the reason that there is no DUI database is because it would marginalize DUI as a crime. Seriously, there would be so many people on it that when people looked at it it just wouldn't seem like that big of a deal. Especially considering how many celebrities/athletes/politicians get pulled over for DUI.
I don't think the database is worth it but I do support much harsher penalties. I currently live in Minnesota where the laws are really lax compared to washington where I used to live. In Washington where a single dui is a suspended license and treatment. Even that didn't seem harsh enough but I just can't even fathom why Minnesota thinks it's ok to have a license after being caught drunk driving.
It all makes me glad I don't drive but it does cause me to bike extremely cautiously here.
I would also be fore harsher penalties... kind of not related but is... I am a type II diabetic and had my license taken away just recently. I guess this happens when you become insulin dependent and my doctor gave me the approval to drive without restrictions but marked I was non compliant. Because I am non compliant with taking care of my diabetes they still choose to take it away. This literately cost me my career and with a family of four to feed and being the sole bread winner in the house it has put a financial hardship on me. DMV doesn't care and I am even being judged by a person behind a desk with zero medical background.
One thing that all my family and friends keep pointing out... "But drivers with multiple DUIs can still retain there license but the minute they find out you are a diabetic they take it away? Doesn't sound fair..."
I don't believe a database will do much, except for potentially swiping a card at a bar to establish a potential sale by controlling how much a person can actually drink or whether they can legally buy a drink at all. Which raises other questions, altogether.

I would go a step further. Let's post pictures of everyone who has every broken a law and the city hall and then let's all go to their house and burn it to the ground. Afterwards we tie up their limps to horses and see what happens while drinking a beer coffee and unhealthy food.
This is really unnecessary, and borderline trolling. DUI is an extremely serious crime.

Its only as serious as you make it to be. I've been a weekly bar patron since I was under 21. I've never had an incident. How bout we judge and punish people for things they've actually done - not speculate what they "could" do.
To me, disguistingly obese people is more serious than drinking and driving.

Just curious.. does "non compliant" mean you were not taking care of your diabetes as you should? Everyone I knew who had diabetes failed to take care of themselves. They're all dead. And they didn't die easy. Lots of amputations first. Worries me.
I'd say no but then I think the sex offender database you linked to is wrong as well. If a person commits a crime they should be punished for it, but the punishment should be geared to making them a functioning member of society. Public databases exist to shame and exile. In this situation treatment is more useful as it will, hopefully, produce a productive individual. As opposed to things like blacklisting or the permanent revoking of their license, which will leave them unable to function properly for the rest of their lives.

I agree but would add what the state of Kansas has more of a trust but verify approach on your first DUI after you get your driver license back
they make you get a breathalyzer for your car you have to pass th test before you can start the car and every so often as your driving or the
car truns off and if the cops pull you over even sober and your not in your car you are doing time.
I dont understand what a database for DUI offenders would do?
I used www.familywatchdog.us when I was looking to buy my first house becase I did'nt want to move in to a place two doors down from a person
who has a thing for little girls. being that I have daughters thats not somthing i want to worry about to much, and i would. but why would I want
to know about a guy down the street that got a DUI five years ago three sates away from here?

Is this because you think drunk drivers are less dangerous/cause less harm than sex offenders? Or because you think they are less likely to be repeat offenders?
I live in a neighborhood with a lot of kids; basketballs in the road and children flying down their driveways into the street on bikes are very common occurrences here. Drunk drivers, or even bad drivers that don't pay attention, could easily cause irreparable physical injury or death. I'd rate them as just as dangerous as sex offenders if not more so in terms of harm to children.

No i just believe it effects the the victim in different ways and i think it's because one crime is targeted and one is not. i've never heard of a guy getting drunk with the plan to run over the kid next door while a molester is looking and planning to commit a crime.
I believe the DUI offender is more likely to be a repeat offender because the drunk driver does not think he has committed a crime and is more likely to be forgiven by society.

I did buy a home in a neighborhood with only one entrance to cut back on traffic and people looking for short cuts but there's only so much you can do teach your children to pay attention and hope for the best

As a sober alcoholic for the last two years (though I never drove drunk, for some reason) I can tell you that loosing access to your children, becoming homeless, and physical harm are not a deterrent to anything an alcoholic does, so social shaming is not even close. Many people that reach the point of mutiple DUIs have way more self loathing than anything that could be heaped on by public shame.[/quote]
it is basically attempted manslaughter every thime someone drinks and drives.
no it is not. Attempting something requires intent, and a person that drives while impaired is not (in most cases) driving with the intent of doing someone harm. Their brain chemistry is causing them to poorly judge the likely outcome of their actions, which is reckless and should be punished harshly, but it is not attempted manslaughter.

They do this at 1am to 2am when the drunk drivers are coming home? Are there no curfew laws in that area?
Not to say "There will never be anyone in the street" but hell, there shouldnt be kids on bikes at 2am. At least not here : under 18, in before midnight.
I don't see the correlation between 'I don't drink and drive' and 'people who DO drink and drive are committing a serious crime'.
Unsure if this was for me (?) as it immediately followed my post
The correlation was I DO drink and drive. The legal limit is roughly 2 beers in an hour for an average sized adult. If you frequent the bar in the later hours, I'd bet more than 75% of the people there have had more than 2 beers. And I'd bet at least HALF of them are driving home. Yet you don't see 5 police cars waiting in the parking lot at every bar come 2am
The cops (in my town) keep people safe. That includes people driving home. Theyre not here to harass and crack down on every bar patron come closing time. Otherwise the "Over the limit? Under arrest" commercial would be actually be true.

Just to be fair anyone can drink and drive at any time they just may have to plan ahead to drink. i work 3rd shift so I may buy before i go to work if i want a beer after work.

I'm honestly uncomfortable with the whole idea of a publicly visible database of any criminal. We should be focusing on rehabilitation and prevention (either through increased enforcement or through education), not stigmatizing people who (for whatever reason) commit a crime.
