It seems like we're hearing more about robots, machines, and androids in the media these days especially in our society. The latest issue of GQ Magazine features a Robot Scientist who built 1-2 life-like robots similiar to what Japan was doing to where they can communicate and respond back to humans as If they were human.
Before then was IBM's famous Supercomputer "Watson" that recently won on Jeopardy! while stumping human contestants Ken Jennings and some other guy while trying to "prove a point" while giving money away to charity, then when Whoopi Goldberg or Oprah was offerred to interview Watson she declined being as creeped out about that aspect I'm not surprised.
Why is it that humans are trying to turn science fiction into reality to jeopardize not just the normalization of society but also to change it drastically in a way where it could have devastating consequences?
When is enough enough? Since the 1980's and earlier we've come a long way in advancements in technology which in some cases are associated with extra-terresterials or aliens from outer space utilizing technologies they have possibly used and re-discovering them in the 20th and 21st Centuries. If anyone's seen Ancient Aliens on the History Channel you'll know what I'm talking about.
But this topic is about the future of robots and machines here on Earth and it seems like with the rate technology is going these days it's coming alot sooner than later, I'll admit the kind of technology we have these days is great but I'm fearing that humans are already going too far with it to the point where it just doesn't seem natural. It's already happening as we speak.

I honestly don't see a problem with technology of any kind. Any technology that comes around is inherently good, as in it serves a purpose. So, technology that has not come to frution yet has not proven it's worth. This is why we see great technological advancement of war goods during war time, and during peace time of useful things like electricity, radio, cars, computers...
If these things are being developed someone wants them. New technology can be scary as it's something we've never seen before, and the consquences may be unforseen on a personal level. Robots taking over jobs is scary. A computer that can communicate back is also scary as it's something we've never seen before.
If you want to break it down simply, and think outside of the box. To nature humans are the scariest things ever. What we can do is completely unknown, and we have the first real possiblity of completely destroying it. Despite this, perhaps we can actually be good for nature, spreading it to other planets, spreading the greatness of life across the universe. It's difficult to see the light when facing an unknown conclusion.
The last thing is something from my macro-economics teacher. Technology is a driving force of production, and thus it's inherently good for an economy, as the key to growth is production. So, technology helps grow economies, raise the standard of living, and only seems unnatural because it is something separated from our personal norms. People thought cars were unnatural, airplanes especially. Radio's were an amazing technology, as were telephones. Our technologies, while very unnatural, will eventually seem natural, as they'll be developed that way.
I for one will welcome any new technology as long as it it's helpful to humanity as whole.

Or I see it differently, that some people are mutilated in different ways or born with impairments. A person that has nothing but mental health problems from a car accident given back full functionality with a small computer in their head is worth the risk of having a few robots.
Most robots aren't really "human" to any degree, at best they're insectoid. An insectoid helper bot to the maimed and crippled is something we should welcome, especially for the elderly that have bodies that are in various states of decay but otherwise are mentally there.
Why is it that humans are trying to turn science fiction into reality to jeopardize not just the normalization of society but also to change it drastically in a way where it could have devastating consequences?
Science fiction is exactly that fiction. I do not foresee a global conflict between robots and humans in our lifetimes. Robots are far, far from sentience.
Furthermore, there are very few actual robots out there. Watson is not a robot as you're already aware. We won't have many robots for a long time and, even when they emerge, they will lack the dexterity of human beings.
Yeah, I never thought I would see a person afraid of technology these days. It truly looks like paranoia. Technology has proven itself to be a good thing. Even militar and aggresive technologies have been applied also for good, so seeing people still arguing against it seems weird.
I don't think robots are made only for purposes of emulating science fiction. All this stuff, like Watson, cost millions of dollars, so I think they are doing with the purpose of researching. For example, computer that can answer questions that complex can be the basis for a new kind of web search engine and a conversation robot could be useful for a call center. Is just that robots are view as a cool way to present that technology and cause sensation about it.

So your main fear is that humans will one day become subservient to mechanical overlords? I daresay many of us are slaves already, and are quite happy with our enslavement. Imagine if this 'slavery' gave you access to near-instant communication, all of your favorite videos, musical pieces, and games whenever you want them, and more reading material than you can shake a stick at. Wouldn't you want to serve this new, shiny, box-like master? Wouldn't you want to spend hours and hours each day, hunched over a terminal, submitting your mind and body to decadent decay? I say that the overlord we need fear is not that which threatens us with suffering, but that which wins us over with pleasure. Our race relies so heavily on computer technology and the internet already that if some force cut it off, there would be widespread chaos. In the not-to-distant future you will be unable to go a single day without logging in. Not because you're addicted, but because the rest of the world no longer functions entirely within the realm of physicality. You say you fear the day robots and androids make us their slaves. I say that computers and the internet already have.

Makes sense with how the internet has hardwired us especially with YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. This is what's really killing the Table Top Gaming Industry in the Secondary Market, less people wanting to play TCG/CCG's in paper form due to the massive popularity of MMO's and that is still a growing problem.
Sooner or later this forum will almost cease to exist depending If Paper Magic can last longer. Okay now here's the difference, computers and the internet gives us pleasure yet robots and androids give us pain. Sure robots and androids might seem useful at first glance but there's a sinister nature lurking within them that could potentially turn our world upside down.
As much as I really like Japan in terms of their Pop Culture in Anime/Manga, I think they've drawn the line in terms of technology most notably with robotics. They can compose great video game music as well, but androids and robots? seriously Japan? As If Vocaloids were bad enough.
Personally I wouldn't want to live there now considering how the aspect of robots and androids adapting to society is a very very bad idea. Infact it's very scary, the future just seems really scary at the moment either way you slice it.

Haven't you watched The Terminator, or Wargames, better yet the new Battlestar Galactica? None of those are impossible at all. We're not anywhere near producing cylons, but the both technology and the reasons for using them are completely plausible. I don't think we're near a Skynet, and we definitely aren't near a world where a Skynet could kill all the humans and then expect to be able to be self-sufficient without humans; however, if some heuristic program became self-aware and also suicidal/homicidal, it could probably trigger all the nukes either directly or indirectly.
In fact, we've almost nuked everything several times. All of us are only alive right now because one soviet launch control specialist decided to disobey direct orders to launch. So on that note, I say we will destroy ourselves with nukes or other methods before we build robots to do it.

Well according to Robowatch.org, Marina Gorbis director of the Institute for the Future says that many whitecollar jobs will soon be replaced by robots. She claims there will be a robotic renaissance and that our children will have a chronically high 10 unemployment rate as the result.
There's other messages in the chat room on that website, you can go read them If you like. Someone else also posted on the website that a new robotic car was developed that actually drives itself without the use of humans driving them.
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal titled, "Israeli Robots Remake the Battlefield." This clearly shows that Isaac Asimov's First Law of Robotics where Robots will not harm a human being is being completely ignored and that Robots are now being developed and deployed by many of the world's armies with the specific purpose to find and kill humans.
There's also talk about Roboanatomy and Robophysiology creating a new species known as "Robo Sapiens". The fear is that members of this new species will progressively LOSE THEIR HUMAN IDENTITY. Ultimately they may become dangerous competitors of Homo Sapiens (Us). I know alot of this sounds farfetched but it's legit according to the website.
Another post mentioned the use of AI in the teaching of our young could be a bad idea. Since we seem to have such a hard time publishing the truth in our school books now. How easy it would be to manipulate the public If the human element was removed. Subjects would only learn what was deemed proper for them to learn to facilitate the belief of whatever social engineering you wanted. The youth removed the truth would only believe logic. that computers cannot lie but those that program them can.
As socialism is on the rise in America we all hope that machines are not the ones we rely on who decides who needs help and who does not. Machines follow logic as their guiding principle, the needs of the many outway the needs of the few, those who will most likely perish will be denied care so those who will probably live will be given the resources. The only way socialism could truly work is if a computer sorted everything out.

Paranoid speculation that runs on breathless hints and suggestions (plus some misunderstanding and perhaps even outright fabrication) rather than credible causal connections. How do we get from "Advances in technology will render some jobs obsolete" (a situation we ought to be pretty familiar with after more than two centuries of industrialization) to "Robots are enslaving us all!"? What's there to be afraid of in a car driver that's never drunk, fatigued, or distracted by a cell phone conversation? Why should we believe a military robot would be any less reliable than a man in a tank? What the hell does "losing their humanity" even mean? What exactly would make robot educators more dangerous than an undereducated and undermotivated workforce of human teachers? And why on Earth would you think computers have to think like socialists?

Firstly: I'd question the validity of such claims when made by a site named 'robowatch', which implies they're already heavily biassed. Furthermore, is it a bad thing that humans would have to do laborious tasks no more? It's not like there isn't anything else to do.
There's other messages in the chat room on that website, you can go read them If you like. Someone else also posted on the website that a new robotic car was developed that actually drives itself without the use of humans driving them.
Which would eventually, when the systems work properly, lead to safer roads and less accidents.
Asimov's books, though good, are still fiction, keep that in mind. Furthermore, those robots are not autonomous. They're still controlled by humans.
Which website? Robowatch? Because, again: they're not a third-party source. They've made their mind up about this technology and decided that it is bad perse. They're not an objective source.
Another post mentioned the use of AI in the teaching of our young could be a bad idea. Since we seem to have such a hard time publishing the truth in our school books now. Subjects would only learn what was deemed proper for them to learn to facilitate the belief of whatever social engineering you wanted. The youth removed the truth would only believe logic. that computers cannot lie but those that program them can.
A program can only lie if the coder makes that he can do that. Furthermore, AI is still a very long way away. We have troubles making them do even the simplest of tasks, let alone make them understand language and coherently answer to it. This is still very much a thing of science fiction.
As socialism is on the rise in America we all hope that machines are not the ones we rely on who decides who needs help and who does not. Machines follow logic as their guiding principle, the needs of the many outway the needs of the few, those who will most likely perish will be denied care so those who will probably live will be given the resources. Oh noes! Socialism! Really, America (sorry for the generalizing here), get over it. Socialism is not some great evil which plans to overthrow your rampant capitalism and make everybody work in the coal pits to power their machine overlords.
And we still do that, by the way. You need a new heart? Good luck getting one if you have some other illness or affliction.
And what is wrong with using logic as your guiding principle? Everybody does it, and most, if not all, of our stupid mistake is when we ignore logic and go with what we 'think is right'.

We have laboured long to build a heaven, only to find it populated with horrors.
To be fair there were parts in which Watson just straight up wiffed. Like they would ask for a place and he would give a person or time period.

I don't know if it has gone too far, but I do think technological progress has outstripped our society's ability to adapt to the changes it makes. For instance, the social security issue that has come because of advances in medical science.

That's what they said about refrigerators/freezers, motor cars, computers, etc, etc, etc. In the end, we are better off. It drastically cheapens the production process and frees up people to begin working in other areas.
I know this sounds silly, but it's kind of like the trend you saw in a realized form on Star Trek. At a certain point, half of us will just be making art or something.

Seriously, Europe, get over your obsession with undermining free enterprise.
I sometimes wonder how the industrial revolution is taught in schools around Europe. Was it treated like the most negative and horrific thing to ever happen to mankind? Because that is the impression that I get from reading you guys sometimes.
Daemon is the best rendition of "robots/computer" taking over the world. Basically a programming team creates an MMORPG that gets laid over the whole world via HUDs & GPS. A Daemon is of course a collection of scripts that respond to triggers. This thing monitored the news and had humans inputting information, which then triggered various events like what happens in an MMORPG and various people joined the MMORPG which ended up having real consequences for everyone else. Mostly because the computer system had access to drones, which moved around like MPCs in an MMORPG.
That's actually a pretty damn cool concept.
I agree with infinityalarm and BS... this thread is pretty much full of fail. Rampant speculation, paranoia, and slippery slope fallacies abound...

Firstly: I'd question the validity of such claims when made by a site named 'robowatch', which implies they're already heavily biassed. Furthermore, is it a bad thing that humans would have to do laborious tasks no more? It's not like there isn't anything else to do.
Which would eventually, when the systems work properly, lead to safer roads and less accidents.
Asimov's books, though good, are still fiction, keep that in mind. Furthermore, those robots are not autonomous. They're still controlled by humans.
Which website? Robowatch? Because, again: they're not a third-party source. They've made their mind up about this technology and decided that it is bad perse. They're not an objective source.
A program can only lie if the coder makes that he can do that. Furthermore, AI is still a very long way away. We have troubles making them do even the simplest of tasks, let alone make them understand language and coherently answer to it. This is still very much a thing of science fiction.
Oh noes!
I am not worried about "robot overlords", but I am worried about this...
We will lose a little bit of our humanity.

Generalizations are fun.
Oh, I see. It's true cuz it sez so on teh webz.
Wow. Just wow. I can't believe I actually read that line of reasoning being used.
That's actually a pretty damn cool concept.
I agree with infinityalarm and BS... this thread is pretty much full of fail. Rampant speculation, paranoia, and slippery slope fallacies abound...
I was being tongue-in-cheek there. I don't necessarily disagree with the ideas of capitalism.
And we're pretty pro-industrial revolution over here, I think. Less child-labour and arduous work == good.
