I'm sure we have all (the Americans at any rate) seen the anti-smoking ads by Truth and similar organizations. I find it ironic that they call themselves Truth, as they are just as deceitful as tobacco companies. Their ads are unethical to the point of stupidity, and pointless really. There are enough reasons not to smoke without using misdirection, misinformation, lies, and outright invention. Does anyone agree? I can't be the only one that sees this and thinks it is wrong. Just because this group is trying to "help people" does not mean they should be allowed to use whatever tactics they choose to achieve their ends. If MADD or the NRA (or a similar group) used inflated statistics to get their point across people would not stand for it. Truth gets a free pass just because they attack our new "bogieman" SMOKING? I don't think so...
I find their comercials to the point of absurdity their new ones are even worse.
to the point that you really can't take them seriously.
is smoking bad? yea it can cause a lot of health issues down the road even to the point of death.
i use to bowl before all the smoking bans and at times it was kinda of annoying, but i mean it is their choice and it is allowed.
when i was in college i hung out in the smokers lounge basically. that is where all my friends were. they didn't mind and i didn't bother them about it. they were kind enough not to smoke in my face though.

I'm well aware of the Truth movement and their marketing tactics. I am unfamiliar with their deceitful tactics and information. Care to cite any specific examples?
http://www.youtube.com/user/truthorange
Here is their Youtube channel, where you can find the ads. They claim 1200 people a day (50/hour) are killed by cigarettes in America alone.
These numbers are extrapolated from CDC reports made a decade ago. The CDC and other organizations still report these findings but also admit that they are out of date estimations.
"Truth" misrepresents them as fact to millions of people everyday. This is just one example...and only took a couple of minutes of research.
Truth commercials make me want TO smoke. They're ****ing absurd. The latest ones I've seen were a series of fake job interviews where they were basically seeing if the people could handle being a tobacco exec. Either the entire thing is fabricated so the person's reaction is staged and irrelevant, or they called in people who were looking for REAL jobs during a time of record unemployment (Or, depending when it was filmed, in a time of great economic downturn leading towards record unemployment) and completely wasted their time. Considering everyone already knows that smoking is bad for you and the people who smoke simply don't care, I'd say what they did in making those ads is MUCH worse.

I totally agree...TRUTH anti-smoking ads are full of S.
I did a whole essay in college about them in my ethics class.
One thing, and I am at work here, so I'll post links later...
In one particular Truth ad, they claimed that something like 80% of smokers start smoking as teenagers......well DUH! The legal smoking age and age to buy cigarettes is 18 r-turds
and the phillip morris documents that they got their information from, said simply that...that 80% of the purchasers of phillip morris products begin buying cigarettes between ages 18-20
Now the ad, is supposed to make people believe that their 14 year old daughter basically is lightin em up everyday. They use just as much fearmongering as anyone
They should at least change their name to Opinion.com
I am a non-smoker, my issue has always been, leave the smokers alone
Seriously, I can be 100% the healthiest dude on the planet, clean lungs, clean liver...and BAM! hit by a truck.
Living to old age is a matter of LUCK, not conditioning.
Besides, so what if I die a little early, who really really wants to live until they are pissing themselves and their junk don't work anymore? Who wants to be an old wrinkled frail burden with ostioperosis (spell check?) and kidney stones....seriously
I haven't seen the ones that you are speaking about, but the last 10 years alot of anti-smoking campaigns have been done here in Norway and to great effect. Smoking is down by about 50% (from 50% of the population to 25). Some have just quit and others have startet using chewed tobacco instead (less harmfull to themselves and certainly less harmfull to others).

Chewing tobbaco is definitely NOT better for someone to use than cigarretes. They put plexiglass shards in with it so that it cuts your mouth and gives you a direct to bloodstream nicotine rush and there is a significantly higher possibility of various types of mouth cancer. Also IMHO a little smoke is a lot less nasty than someone spitting smelly nasty gobs of brown s*** all over the place.
As for the Anti-smoking ads: I think that they have a decent message behind them but they are too busy concentrating on making stupid jokes and using sarcasm to actually get there message across in the way that would make people stop smoking. I'm pretty sure if they showed a bunch of slides like they did in health class that smoking would drop considerably. For instance I saw a pack of Marlboro Reds from Thailand that my friend brought back, they had a horrible picture on the front showing a cancerous rotted mouth of what I assume to be a smoker. I didn't smoke a single cig out of that pack.

You really believe that? I can't speak for the US, but here that has been a common myth that has been proven false again, and again over the last decades.
Also, as far as the cancer goes there have been questions about this but in countries like sweden where this is very normal to use there have been done ALOT of research on it over the last decades, both long and short term and they still have not managed to find a proper good link between cancer and chewing tobacco.
I to find it nastier, but it is better healthwise and the people that use it doesn't seem to mind much. And spitting it on the ground is ofcourse not ok. Not many people do that here though. Garbage bins are everywhere.
The anti-smoking ads themselves here has usually been about showing you what happens to the bodies of smokers. Ofcourse most often the lungs. Also there are large health warnings on all cigarette packs and there is alot of information campaigns both in school and on tv.

Whether there is complete, 100% legit, no questions asked proof that chew leads to cancer or not I've seen pictures of heavy chewing tobacco users mouths (I will not post them here because I really don't want to have to see them again) and they were covered in lesions and callouses. Also the bottom front teeth or the side teeth were rotted away, depending on if they were using dip or plugs respectively.
If MADD or the NRA (or a similar group) used inflated statistics to get their point across people would not stand for it. Truth gets a free pass just because they attack our new "bogieman" SMOKING? I don't think so...
You don't think MADD or the NRA have ever used bad statistics? Are you serious? MADD especially has been very notorious for either using bad statistics or ignoring those that contradict their current goal- for one example, they continue to pursue lower and lower legal levels of BA despite overwhelming evidence that the vast majority of drunk driving accidents are caused by people significantly over the current limit and that casual drinkers with a BA of .08 or lower pose no threat.
That said I agree that no organization should be lying in PSAs- that just leads to having your whole message thrown into question. There are plenty of completely true reasons one shouldn't smoke.
This is just standard policy for any special interest group or person trying to get there point across, from the debate threads here, to your local politicians to obama, they all misrepresent the facts and information they present... There really isnt anything to see here.
Oddly enough...I have never seen one of those. I rarely watch TV, though.
Honestly, smoking should be banned for the health of people, but the way these ads sound, this is ridculous. State the facts - it makes it harder to breath, you start to cough and sputter, and you can get a myriad of assorted cancers.
Also, smoking can't be banned because smoking is addictive. If they were to ban cigarrettes, there would be riots. If we were to somehow find a way to make it near impossible for people to start, so that we could ban cigarrettes after all the existing smokers were dead (whether it be by something related to smoking or not).
Cards with the post 8th Edition, color shifted and future shifted templates as well as the timeshifted and Coldsnap reprint ones tastes a little sweeter. Any gold cards with the old faces are a little saltier. European foreign (except Russian) cards with the mentioned templates above are not as sweet as their English counterparts and has a wierd after taste. All taste tests were done from fresh packs and all cards tasted are not foil cards. I have yet to taste Asian and Russian cards.
Lots of things should be banned for the health of people that thing is does it make sense to ban it.
if you ban smoking they will just go underground like alochol in the 20's.
this has proven not to work time and time again.
These commercials though are just over the top stupid.
I'm with you on this (wow, felt weird to say that). Government should not be in the business of prohibiting people from destroying themselves, but the reasoning of "it will happen anyway" could be applied to any and all laws.
I'm with you on this (wow, felt weird to say that).
Regardless of what people might think. I am not an unreasonable person. I tend to carry that people should be responsible for themselves.
That they do not need government to take care of them.
If you want to ruin your life and your health by smoking be my quest who am i to stop you.
People know the dangers of smoking and the addiction that it can cause.
One of my wifes relatives just had surgery due to smoking. He smoked cigars and got cancer in this throat.
He was lucky that they didn't have to remove his vocal cords and all of that stuff and talk on a electronic device.

I started smoking Cigarettes at a very young age, mainly because it was always around me(its a family thing)
I recognize the Dangers of it, and what can happen too me later in life, but in all honesty I dont want to live past 30, once that age hits, life get worse.
In anycase, I like smoking, and while it is a horrible and expensive habit to get into, fabricating statistics and doing hard drugs is worse.
I can also say that Im not upset with the fact that smoking in restaurants isnt allowed. In 1 day, My state will raise Taxes on Cigarettes, in order to help with the recession, which is BS, but hey, I cant do anything about that.
I can say that I wont smoke near kids, its just wrong and insensitive.
Eh. This group is not that much different than PETA. They're a nuisance, and known to mislead, be as sensationalist as possible, and fabricate information whenever they need to. But no one is ever going to try to stop them, because 'their heart is in the right place'.
You know. It's okay to deceive people as long as you're doing it for a 'greater cause'. Just ask Tom Cruise.
