How can debt pay for anything? Debt is the opposite of funds.
Or, if you're implying that the US government is borrowing money from the federal reserve bank to stay afloat, that's disturbing.
I should've said that "the debt was incurred to fund" blah blah.
I bothered with this obvious tidbit because Trinsie seems to think the federal government incurs no real expenses, and that there's no need for them to be collecting taxes. (This interpretation is based on Trinsie's citing services which are paid for by state-level taxes, followed by statements like "The amount of revenue that the IRS generates each year, based on the taxation of personal income, fails to pay for anything in the Federal government budget aside from interest on the national debt.")
I could've misunderstood him. Even those who agree with him must admit that his posts are not models of clarity.
Trinsie's latest post again matches what I have heard so far. Not saying it's accurate - it's just what I've read and heard.
What about the contrary stuff you've read in this thread?
"Peanut butter and jelly is one day going to rule over all mankind" is a pretty simple concept, but if I said that you still might call for an explanation, since, ya know, it makes no sense.

Yea, but the thing is, I can sit down and read the sentence "Taxation is theft" and immediately understand the whole of that person's point about taxation.
Because taxation is theft.
Men in uniforms threaten your security with guns when you don't pay taxes, or elsewise men in suits threaten your finances with lawsuits when you don't pay taxes.
Bottom line: How does taxation differ from theft when both of those kinds of ways to acquire money come under the threat of violent force?
Ok, so rancored_elf seems to think the IRS is illegal. For those of you who think this, please state why, because... A lot of people here, myself included, would go at that.
The most ingenious argument I can think of for not paying any tax. No tax = no money to go to war; no money to go to war = no chance that Iran could be next; no chance that Iran could be next = hooray for world peace!
Go rancored_elf!

Are you freaking serious? It's not ingenius, it's incompetent and ignorant. Quit spamming the thread.
I was joking. I only read the first post, and was suitably amused to post that. If you can't take humour and think I'm spamming, then perhaps you are reading the wrong forum and should go back to the Labour Party where you belong, Gordon...
If you want my serious opinion, you can have it. Given that we all participate or have the opportunity to participate in democratic decision-making, perhaps it's time we started investigating the real abuses of power in this country (the UK) and others (the US) rather than getting at the people who collect the money. rancored_elf should be applauded for his stance on the IRS, but coming from a country in which there are a LOT MORE examples of illegal activity I can document by someone who effectively took the money and ran (as far as the Middle East, but don't worry, we'll get him back as soon as possible and into Broadmoor where he belongs) this summer, the phrase "tilting at windmills" springs to mind.
Glad to see, however, you agree with my thoughts on this matter.

@Suth: Out of humor, rebelliousness, or just because we like to do things we know are wrong sometimes. Please, if you want examples, I can have a field day with enjoyable bad things!
But 16th amendment for the win. IRS isn't illegal. How the government spends our money is unethical though. As for debt economics, who do you think is devaluing the dollar now, and towards what end? I think many 'economists' (or rat bastards) are looking to keep the debt down and spending up that way, and if they wipe out thousands of savings accounts, they could care less.
I think I might know where R_E got his information from. There's a movie directed by Aaron Russo, entitled America: Freedom to Fascism. It makes a lot of the same arguments that he's been making, bu what really made me certain that it was the source was the quote, "Federal reserve is as federal as the federal express." Of course, if i'm wrong, don't hesitate to correct me.

Which part, the "taxation is theft" part, or the part where "theft is wrong."
I mean, they're both pretty simple concepts, but . . .

You may not care much about that distinction, of course, which is obviously your prerogative.
