Did anyone else find it quite disturbing that in the new fantastic four movie, the american camp had its own staff torturer? When they captured the silver surfer he was shown with electric shockers, syringes and various vials, and a table of strange devices. Is torture just supposed to be expected of America? Has it become so engrained in our culture that it's not supposed to shock people when they see it?
Media is not making me steal. But in a way is like the story of the very hot girl with the short skirt teasing the old sick guy with a history of rape.
All is fair in love and war. I mean, supposedly the world was going to end, right?
In any case, no, I don't think torture is all that surprising nowadays. Frankly, I'm not sure that there is much you CAN put on a screen that will shock anyone.
I found the fact that this movie got made at all to be disturbing.
Actually, I find the pretend torture -- by lackeys of the U.S. government -- of a comic book movie character to be far less disturbing than the fact that it actually happens in real life.
I suppose it was the filmmakers' intent to make the story seem somehow relevant.

Torture is completely necessary for national security. How else are we supposed to pry out that information from those captured terrorists? Okay, maybe it lacks moral ground. And maybe it is unfair. But in a world where nations quietly endorse terrorism because they know that nobody can accuse the government directly, anything is fair game. Even if the terrorism argument is ridiculous, it is bound to happen sometime or the other. So what are we going to do about it? Torture is as old as rape and murder. It's not leaving anytime soon.

It's a movie, and a bad one at that.
