There will be two participants for each debate, one For, one Against. In addition, depending upon interest, there will be backup posters for each participant in case the Primary participant becomes unable to continue with the Debate.

I must absolutely sign up for being FOR the Christian Church having a positive influence on history, and I am willing to alter my vacation to do the thing properly. The fact that I didn't really care about the whole Imperialism thing (much like Prizm, it seems) contributed to the slowness of that debate; I'm sure you all know that I do care about this topic, however.
So, to reiterate, Furor signs up FOR the Christian Church having a positive influence on history.

Then loom'd his streaming majesty From out that wine-dark fog, And spake he unto all our crew: "Go forth, and read my blog."
I'll debate in favor of Socialism! I'm a diehard capitalist, one of the most extreme on the board, with the possible exception of msun641(where is he by the way?)

Pretty please?
We lost contact with msun at the end of the school year. Too bad, he was my favorite sparring partner.
As a die-hard socialist, I should sign up to be an advocate of capitalism -- I still feel guilty in not arguing against US Imperialism (and BenGreen really should have ran on the pro side anyway), but I'll have to think about it.
Edit 11 - Ah, I see Alfred has already called me out. Thanks, brutha. :smile2:
I don't see how tariffs are anti-capitalism. I'm sorry, but I don't see it.
Tariffs are the Government inserting themselves into the marketplace to ensure that the jobs of their citizens are not endangered by other cheaper or better goods, most of the time against the natural tendencies of the marketplace. If the sole reason for implacing the Tax on incoming goods is to insulate the jobs of the people who work in the country, then the tarriff is inherintly socialist, acting as a type of welfare that all consumers must pay for. If this doesn't sound a tee-witty bit like a socialist policy to you, perhaps you may not be the proper candidate for the 'socialist' position.
EDIT: I am applying for the 'capitalist' side of the debate.
There cannot be a system that has absolutely no government, other than Anarchy. I am not an anarchist. I do, however, feel the government should provice far fewer services than it does now.
That's reasonable. If a nation's economy was 95% capitalist ("free enterprise") and 5% state/socially-supported, that nation would still be capitalist. Not that you're arguing the point, but splitting hairs over this is pretty pointless.
Nah, it's just a signup. The mods then pick who participates (I think).
Correct.
Actually, reading back through the previous FD threads, the only time a selection process is mentioned is in reference to dice rolling, on the part on Senori.
> This thread is for signing up for the Debate. Not for discussing it, not for debating about it. That goes on the Formal Debate Discussion Thread- also conveniently stuck!
> Being slightly less than the biggest Capitalist or Socialist ever doesn't disqualify you for this debate. You don't have to be Lenin to entertainingly debate for Capitalist, nor do you have to be Adam Smith to debate for Socialism. So long as the side you usually debate is clearly one way or another, you are able to do so.
> I try to leave the debate term vague in order to give more freedom to the Debate itself. However, if anyone has any suggestions as to how they should be defined, PM me.
> Please, don't draft people, and please don't say "You're not who I want so I don't think you should do it!" If there are better candidates for the debate, they'll be decided later. Your posts will only cause acrimony.
Now, sign up!

I'm on Furor's team for the Christian Church having a positive influence on history.
But neither of you are being 'Devil's Advocates', are you?
That's for the Devil's Advocate debate, not for that one. Sorry for not being more clear.

Is the influence of the Christian Church on history positive?
I'll be on the team AGAINST, but only if the collective strength of my team is able to grow. I don't think me and Squirels.On.Fire have the skills to take on Furor and extremestan (not even Furor alone for that matter).
CMON, PLEASe, we need someone else to sign on for this debate...

Well, I'd like to participate in the Devil's Advocate debate.
I am pro-capitalism, which means that for this debate I would be supporting and arguing FOR socialism.
Hm. I don't know how well I'll do, but I'll try.
