This thread is for the discussion of my latest article, Squandered Resources: Combo and Budget Legacy. We would be grateful if you would let us know what you think, but please keep your comments on topic.
Another fantastic article spooky!
The more I read about it the more I want to try out Moldy Cheerios. It looks ridiculously fast and fun so I think I'm going to finally have to get over to magiccards.info to print out some proxies and give it a try tonight
And glad to hear you're enjoying Sac Land Tendrils as well! It's certainly one of my favorite decks
Nice article. Hits the high points of the forum's Budget lists so far as combo goes. One thing I'm finding a little difficult with dipping my toes into Budget legacy is figuring out sideboards, so maybe an article on that soon would be a good idea. I realise that it's meta based, but even an explanation of the common cards available for various budget decks, when to use them and which decks can support them would be useful.

Seems difficult to put together, I'll see what I can do though.
Great article, spooky! The Goblin Storm deck is actually a pauper deck except for the lands. Awesome.
You know, I knew that too. I'm not sure why I didn't say that in the article. I guess my mind was on modern and the fact that it got banned in the format because it was too fast. I played the deck in modern before it was seen in the daily's because I got the idea from pauper, so I knew that's where it originated. =/
Great Article I know spooky quite well and I love playing cheerios and Elf ball combo I believe I will soon be building Scepter chant with my girlfriend so yay for combo decks

Just a note- sac land tendrils has very big problems with wasteland, the reason it's so consistent in pauper is that there is no wasteland.
Not as much as you might think actually. I'll admit that the Wasteland + Life From the Loam lock can be pretty difficult to overcome, but having 1 or even 2 of your lands wasted is something that I've overcome many times in tournaments. The inclusion of 2x Gemstone Mine and 4x Lotus Petal helps greatly with this. I've had a couple games against Lands.dec where I was Waste/Loam locked for a few turns and was still able to combo out for the win off a Gemstone Mine and Lotus Petal.
So yes, while Wasteland does tend to effect Sac Land Tendrils a bit more than other storm decks, it's still no silver bullet and can be overcome with a reasonable draw. Wasteland will slow the deck down a turn, but certainly won't stop it.
Awesome article. I really appreciate all the great information.

moldy cheerios, i totally forgot about that multani chalice deck. That and the original fluctuator decks were some of my favorites back in the day. Turn 1 kobolds xN -> tendrils wtf? haha. Never gets old.
That Polymorph list looks like it could ALMOST be modern legal, if you could replace the cantrips, lose the dazes, and find another way to accel mana without ancient tomb and lotus petal. Playtested it a few times, getting a few turn 2 polymorphs really surprised me. Also a really fun deck!
Thank you for the article, it was really well written and those are some very interesting and affordable combo decks.
Speaking of affordable, I was surprised not to see a second sunrise deck. I'm sure you can make a second sunrise combo in legacy for under 150. There's a version i use that's actually pretty cheap, around 120, and only because it likes to have atleast 2 Lion's eye Diamonds to work with doomsday and shelldock. It can be cheaper if you toss them and focus on land utility to get mana/draw recursion going, under 100 since the only money card at that point is horizon 3x horizon canopy, which are only 10 bucks each. In fact, over 50% of the cards in the deck are under a dollar per card, and 20% of the deck is under a dollar for a set of 4. Dunno why I'm sharing this here, but in any case, awesome article.

Thanks for the compliments. The polymorph deck is actually something a buddy of mine turned into a modern list. It works great, with a turn 3 emrakul on average, which is a turn faster than what wizards wants modern to be. He splashes green for mana ramp/searches in the first 1-2 turns, which gives him enough mana to go off turn 3 without protection or turn 4 with protection. If I can find his list ill send it your way.
It thought of second sunrise like, 2 or 3 days ago, which was obviously too late to include it in the article. It's just one of those things. So many combo decks in the format you just can't remember them all. I'm sure there are plenty that I forgot to include, which is a bummer. =/
I love Squandered Resources. And I'm a Budget Legacy Player by heart.
If you need some help or ideas for your next article feel free to PM me.
Cuz this was about Combo, maybe you (we) can do this even for Control and Aggro
Thanks! I'll keep you in mind. I already know what my next 2 are going to be, but if I change my mind or need some ideas I'll find ya.
Great article spooky. I already have dredge and I'm building tes so I think I may try elfball as my next budget deck, unless anyone has good reason for me to build a different budget combo.

Thanks, it's funny because after seeing it, I DID put together a polymorph list that actually can go off on turns 1 and 2 rarely, but mostly turn 3.
Then late last night, for kicks I took one of the defunct preliminary shells of the deck I had saved and stuck, get this, shared fate into the polymorph slot. Shook off all the not-men and emrakul, stuck a bunch of free cycling/draw filler in, and played it online for kicks, and the first game I play...
I stole their deck on turn 1 before they played a land, and then beat them down with their own creatures. It's the most trolltastic thing ever. I can't stop laughing. I posted it up in the already existent shared fate thread (I lose/you lose) in the deck creation section of the modern forum.
Nevermind what's in the deck, it was supposed to be just junk, but I described the godhand that happened.
And yeah, if you send the list, just PM it, thank you again!
Nice article. Waiting for Masques block to come to MTGO for some cheap Dazes, might as well build a variant of that Polymorph deck to get my feet wet in competitive Legacy.
the elf list is embarassing because genesis wave is a moot point with elves AND cradle like when you have 10 elves on board and you genesis wave for 10 the same cards are gonna beat you and everyone else is gonna scoop.
the other lists are good though.

I think it's psuedo card draw so you can hit emrakul... That and you can do a mini wave just to get a few extra elves down.

You don't need 10 elves for a big wave to hit, you only need a lord effect and some untappers or multiple lords on the field. Beyond that, there are only 2 copies in the deck, so it's not like the deck is based around that one card. Also, as Fortis said, a small genesis wave is still fine. It's never a bad thing to draw 4-5 cards and have most of them come straight onto the field.
Just typical stuff, sideboard options, good matchups, bad ones. I never played extended (there isn't a scene around here), so I know very little about the deck. Other then that it was extremely powerful.

Well the deck is very dependent on it's initial hand and on the draw. It's extremely strong with the right type of hand, but dead in the water with others. In that sense, some have tried to include cards like ponder (you cascade into it =/), but I'm not too sure how much this helps and how much it hurts. Obviously, The list I posted is the one I prefer, but some may disagree with me.
Overall the deck feels a lot like belcher to me, only, when it gets its turn 0 hands it actually has the ability to defend against FoW, which is something I really like. The synergy with the chancellors is crazy. because they act both as spell that help protect and speed up the combo and as combo pieces themselves you dont have to worry about having too many fatties compared to other cards that help the deck along.
As far as sideboard goes, that's kind of difficult, seeing as this deck is a one trick pony of sorts. In the past leyline of sanctity, mindbreak trap and krosan grip have both been used with success. I would probably include Ingot chewer for his invoke and the fact that he can come out with the hypergenesis. The board could also include more elephants and angels in case you face a meta with lots of prison decks.
keep in mind that low cost cards that you may initially want like Xantid Swarm cant be used because they will affect your cascade.
as far as matchups go its pretty much what you would expect for a combo deck. you prey on aggro and have a rough time against control. Discard hurts more than counterspells because you have no library or draw manipulation. One nice thing is that you dont auto lose to chalice/trini decks like traditional combo does, simply because anything you try and cast costs 3 or more anyways.
