This thread is for the discussion of my latest article, The BOOtacular BOOxperience. We would be grateful if you would let us know what you think, but please keep your comments on topic.
Also, that squid story may now be my favourite Magic story ever. I have to ask: did you consider going for the kill anyway and hoping he didn't spot the play? I think I might have done just because it would have been so funny if he'd missed it!
I really want to try BOO draft, but it's tricky to get enough players together who both have both the card creation skill and the free time needed.
Incidentally, I really, really love Brian's card design style. Loads of really elegant, clever ideas and a perfect balance of humour and seriousness. Even the art choices are awesome.

I was actually thinking that right after reading the article.
Tentative plan for said forum draft:
- Each person who wants to enter must design 6 cards: 1 rare/mythic, 2 uncommons, and 3 commons. This is part of sign ups.
- If a player has art in mind, please send it to me (unrendered) with art credits. I'll take care of the render end and the Appr/MWS custom set creation.
- Will want some volunteers to do preliminary reviews. No need for scoring, but may want to input on what errata is needed.
- Rest of the draft as usual.
Excellent stuff, Lesurgo. Sounds like an excellent format to play, and with hideously ridiculous plays.
@Shepherd: Sounds workable to me. Granted, I won't render anything but provide a copy/paste information block from a text file in order to add it to Magic Workstation. Let me know if that gets off the ground; I'd like to help.
@ Majora X: I pumped the 10x lifelink guy with Ricky's Secret Weapon. It was only +1/+1, but gaining 20 felt awesome.
@ bateleur: You're not the only one that loves brian wong's cards. He tends to start from art, and is know to scrap cards if he can't find the appropriate art for it. He has a very elegant sense of humor, and it tends to translate into his cards.
@Arcengal: That savage merfolk is part of a cycle, and I totally agree with you. Dan made a contious decision to make it so you can't get both effects, but I think they should have. You should be rewarded for making XXYY! Some would have been too powerful with both abilities, but I think he could have come up with different abilities or tweaked the P/T. Either way, they looked good and played great.
@ArcanePie: Somebody went to Kinkos (ricky I think) and they printed out sheets of cards for us. (Brian and I have some framed uncut Boo5 sheets.) I'm not sure how much it cost or what we printed it on...do you know Gavin?
@jokalhaups: When you say "from scratch" I hope you don't mean card design. While you could probably design 45 cards in an afternoon, we each had a couple months to design. I found design worked best making a few cards, then walking away for a while. I tended to come up with ideas (like Stasify) but wasn't quite sure how to use them yet. I would think about them for a while, then come back with a bunch of ideas.
Boo was really fun, and I've already started work on my Boo7 set with mechanics I couldn't fit in my last set.
Zygonn. Kinkos let you do this? Wouldn't they consider it blatant copyright infringement? I really want to do this with a group of close friends, but I only want high quality prints. If you could throw me some more details on the kinkos prints and how they were done I'd be more than appreciative.
"After Dan promptly beat Zaiem in a match with Shadowmoor sealed decks they've been playing for four months (it's a long story)"
Dan and I split the two games. I'm up 2-1 in a best of seven (though I kind of want to do best of nine). Five months from now when we conclude, I don't want Dan being able to use this as ammo to somehow support the idea that he's winning.
I was really disappointed with the way my land cycle came out. I was really hoping that they would be better, but as you identified, it was just missing something -- and I don't know what that something is, or how to fix it. Alas.

Kinko's doesn't really care. You just give them the PDFs on a disk and they go in the back and print it out on their high-quality awesome printers. When you cut and sleeve them, it's hard to tell they aren't Magic cards. It's very high-quality. Yes, the art may be copyrighted, but it's not so blatant that they are like, "Wait a second, this art is copyright Jimmy Snarbylfloom the artist - I know this art because I saw it on the web once!"
I forget how much it was. I think $20 for the entire BOO set. It's pretty reasonable.
Tentative plan for said forum draft:
- Each person who wants to enter must design 15 cards: 1 rare/mythic, 3 uncommons, and 11 commons - a booster pack? This is part of sign ups.
- If a player has art in mind, please send it to me (unrendered) with art credits. I'll take care of the render end and the Appr/MWS custom set creation.

Yea, I figured the full time of design and creation would be a bear... so how long do you normally play with the cards? 5 drafts or so? Is this better than cube drafting (I'm not talking about draft format, but creation time)... how long, once you have all the cards together, does it take to set up the packs and draft them? Does the player who makes 45 cards get three packs from those 45 cards, or do all the cards get shuffled up together, and then dealt out? Do you use a systematic method to create the packs (ensure a mix of colors)?

THIS ROCKS. That is great news and makes me so happy. Does MSE have a native ability to convert to PDF? Also what kind of paper did you guys use?
Hey Gavin. Great article. My girlfriend has one of those squids from the domesticated squid card. I don't know where she got them. She had them shipped to Japan from the states and the delivery took like 4 months for some reason.
That is quite possibly the funniest card i have ever seen. Way better than anything unglued or unhinged.
I haven't looked through the cards sets yet, but for this land...
Cursed Fields
Land
Cursed Fields comes into play tapped.
When Cursed Fields comes into play tapped, add B to your mana pool. T: Add W to your mana pool.
Cursed Fields
Land
Cursed Fields comes into play with a charge counter on it. T, Remove a charge counter from Cursed Fields: Add B to your mana pool. T: Add W to your mana pool. Play this ability only if there are no charge counters on Cursed Fields.
The initial mana ability could probably even be for more than one color. B or R might be enough... but what if ...
Charged Field
Land
Charged Field comes into play with a charge counter on it. T, Remove a charge counter from Charged Field: Add U,B,R, or G to your mana pool. T: Add W to your mana pool. Play this ability only if there are no charge counters on Charged Field.
The first time it taps for any off color but not the main color, and after that only the main color. Maybe that is pushing it too far though. Meh.
Volunteers? Part of the BOO Draft is doing this. Just have the players who signed up do it.
With the BOO draft Lesurgo describes, only very experienced players are even invited to participate. It would be better to be able to open a forum draft BOO to everyone without it breaking horribly. Accordingly, even if each team does review another team's cards it makes sense to have some sort of external checking so that most of the games end up actually playable. After all, if all the teams handle the balancing process perfectly there won't be a need for further tweaks anyway.

The catch with porting a decidedly new format to the forums is that some tweaks are just necessary to keep it open for all.
The idea was more for a BOO 8-Way than a regular BOO draft. In either case, I reduced the required submissions as I wanted as many of the participants' submissions to actually matter as much as possible. If each participant submitted a booster, only 24 out of a possible 80 or more would actually be used. That is just a lot of waste.
(If ever, I'm actually inclined to forego rarities altogether ala Cube Draft. Thoughts?)
While having card reviews be a mandatory action is okay with eight people you know, my experience in the FCC tells me that not everyone can judge cards well right out of the starting line. The request for volunteers was more on the line of requesting for veteran help, both from those I regularly see in the forum drafts, 8-Ways, and even the FCC. This was to act as a second line of defense, and to reduce the number of on-the-fly errata.
As to when this will happen, it will depend on certain events happening or not happening around the time 11th Ed comes out.
Man, this is great. I've been talking to my playgroup, and I'll see if I can get them to do something like this, depending on the time requirements. We are mostly busy with University stuff, but something that you can work on your off time, and then draft repeatedly sounds nice to me.
Not to mention the idea of drafting with cards you designed (and cards that you never saw before in your life) is so MINDBLASTING (hehehe)!
Dwyane Wade is also the awesome sauce.

Also, Salvetrip Merfolk makes no sense. If you pay WWUU for it, you should be able to use both effects a la Shadowmoor/Eventide cards.
