This thread is for the discussion of my latest article, Crossing the Vintage Ocean. We would be grateful if you would let us know what you think, but please keep your comments on topic.
I correspond with a Vintage/Legacy player in Portugal who assures me that supporting staples such as Welder and In the Eye of Chaos are still ridiculously hard to find and expensive in parts of Europe. He says that only a few cities in Europe have the kind of community where a newcomer to the format could find or borrow such cards after only a few weeks or months of effort.
I suppose proxy tournaments will have a mixed effect overall - more people will play Vintage than ever before. At the same time non-P9 cards will continue to increase in value and scarcity as demand goes up. The phenomenal growth in Legacy will compound matters- both formats share a large number of out-of-print staple cards, duals, fetch lands, etc.
It's going to be very interesting watching what happens to the Euro metagame in a proxy environment, and how the Americans react to it, if at all.
Thanks for all the responses. I agree that in the past the lack of proxies has had a huge impact on the European metagame. The difference in proxies has been used in the past to discount the European metagame, something that must stop now. As proxies begin to be experimented with in Europe I hope that they catch on and new players are introduced to the format. Europe and America should take a hard look at each others metagames, communicate, and learn from each other.
