The Earth is ripe for a hostile takeover. Unfortunately, two alien races show up to harvest the goodie-bag at the same time.
Knowing that they cannot co-exist, with themselves, or mankind - the alien races must face off to decide who gets to conquer earth.
The martians from H.G. Wells War of the Worlds.
vs.
The invaders from Independence Day.
They decide to face-off against each other on Mars, since neither wishes to destroy the precious resources they need to harvest on Earth.

I seem to recall a single battleship taking out three of the ten Martian Walkers from War of the Worlds. It has been a very long time since I read the book, however.
Walkers being removed by battleships strongly suggests that the independence day aliens are far, far more powerful.
It depends really - because in H.G. Wells novel, they were relatively standard hover-tank-like vehicles - in the straight to dvd movie they were more like imperial walkers.
In the 2005 movie with Tom Cruise, they did actually have a force-field of some kind.
For the purposes of this thread, I obviously want to ignore the "they got sick and died" thing.
Here's something though, in the book, and the 2005 movie, the "Alien" drivers of the WotW tanks came down from space, the tanks had been buried for a long time.
Do they have ships?
I haven't read the novel in years.
Can the WotW weapons get past the force fields on the ID4 ships?

I guess I'm gonna go with: ID aliens invade Mars, Martians find some way to hack their infrastructure and blow up their whole species, then just as the Martians are mobilizing to invade earth, they all simultaneously keel over and die from space flu. Earthlings live on in blissful ignorance forever after.
Wit's End is the PERFECT answer to your opponent's Monomania however.
Just hold on to your Wit's End when they Monomania, so you can Wit's End them on your next turn!!!
I think this is fairly reminiscent of the "Jace Battles" we have seen in past standards.. My guess is we will soon witness the great Monomania-Wit's End battles.
The Independence Day aliens, for the simple reason that HG Wells' aliens are relatively primitive. Even if we take the Tom Cruise movie version, they're simply not shown having the kind of firepower that the ID4 aliens have. The ID4 aliens can wipe out a city with a single blast and have flying ships with shields, while the WotW aliens are only shown as having the tripods.
I tend to agree with the consensus here, ID4 on paper is clearly superior.
I guess I just still have to wonder, can the HGW aliens laser beams penetrate the ID4 shields? If we granted that they did, wouldn't that at least give them a fighting chance?

I would say their shields are about the same. Both are largely immune to conventional weaponry, but the ID4 Aliens have the flying ship swarms, so I would think they could bring the other's shield down first.
Air (space) power is all that matters in this fight, and I don't think the Martians' interstellar flight capabilities are ever addressed although they must have had it. Even assuming they don't die to disease this is the race/culture that failed to plan for it when they held all the initiative. Their either so powerful they just don't care, or phenomenal idiots. Given what we know each side has, ID wipes the surface of mars with their massive air superiority, then comes to earth to be killed by Will Smith and some hillbillies.

The War of the Worlds walkers may be able to shoot down the fighters, but the ships, such as the ones that destroyed DC, would wreck them.
