So, I really need some caffeine to make my brain work properly during the day, but due to some digestive health issues I can't drink coffee or anything with dairy. Tea seems like a reasonable choice for a substitute, but the packaging and marketing on tea tends to be very uninformative, playing it up as a sort of lifestyle drink when all I want to know is whether this brand contains an adequate concentration of stimulants.
Does anyone have any good suggestions for a good brand of tea, or some other caffeinated drink? It has to:
- Not be coffee
- Have no dairy
- Not be carbonated
- Be able to be economically brought to or prepared at work
For bonus points, something without too much sugar is preferred (so again, it sounds like I'm probably describing a strong tea, but have no idea what varieties/brands have sufficient caffeine).
Try Tazo 'Awake', that's all I can really think of. The stronger the caffeine usually the more bitter the taste, so you'll probably need a sweetener. And be careful buying teas if you decide to brach out, many are actually decaf (although delicious).
One option is to order pure caffeine powder (available places like Amazon) and mix it into your drink of choice (after measuring very carefully). The biggest drawback to caffeine powder is that it's relatively easy to lethally overdose on caffeine, so you need to be extremely careful with measuring and dosage.
I have no experience with these products, but a few appear to be really high in caffeine - Arizona Energy teas appear to have ~200 mg (depending on source/flavor). Something like Crystal Light Energy could be mixed at work.
We ran out of coffee on a palaeontological expedition I was on a couple years ago, and the Argentinians shared their yerba mate with us. That stuff kicks you in the face.
The darker the tea, the more caffeine. Only buy the black teas and never white or green. You can look up the caffeine content of some beverages on this website. http://www.caffeineinformer.com/the-caffeine-database
Personally, I've been drinking Pure Leaf Unsweetened as an energy drink/coffee substitute during all nighters for a year or two now. Does it work as well as coffee or energy drinks? Admittedly, no.
Also, note black tea is a carcinogen (or suspected to be). Only the light colored teas are good for you.

Any thoughts?
