False Positive on a drug Test (Need a chemists input)

  • #1
One day I thought I had a blood clot. I went into the clinic. They shot me up with 100mg of lovenox, before even waiting to see if my blood test came bak positive. It was negative.

The doctor then prescribed me Ibuprofen 800, Doxycycline Hyclate 100mg twice per day, and Bupropion 150 once a day for 3 days then twice daily after that to quit smoking.

I had had a recent spinal injury. I have a stomach ulcer.

This guy was trying ro murder me. :|

    Anyways.

    I take:

Ibuprofen 800mg up to 4 times daily

    Bupropion 150mg twice daily

    Doxycycline Hyclate 100mg twice daily

    Abilify 2mg in the morning

    Zyprexa 10mg at night

I know that doxycycline hyclate is Anhydrous. Bupropion is a substituted Amphetamine. Will this make me false positive for something like meth or 'bath salts'? I'm on probation...

Wow. Sorry to hear about your situation. For what it's worth I congratulate and thank you for doing what you felt was right by calling them out on their illegal practices. Not enough people are willing to do that these days.

Unfortunately I can't give you much in the way of advice, except that this isn't the sort of place to ask a question like that. I'm sure there are forums dedicated to chemistry buffs that MIGHT be able to answer your question reliably. I wouldn't trust any answer here even if I got one XD

I also recommend that you talk to a lawyer if you can afford one, or if he will help you pro bono. If your story is true and unbiased, it sounds like you might have a potentially big case. Of course doing so could potentially put yourself into danger given the type of people that you've already crossed.

Pre med student here....those CAN make you test false positive but this is why it's important to keep bottles/prescriptions. A parole officer SHOULD overlook any positive tests you have for perscribed and medically nessisary drugs (employers always do)

Document everything. If things are as much as mess as you say they are, making notes and keeping them safe is all the difference in the end.

I'm tempted to disagree because of personal bias, but this is good general advice. Having said that, here's my input.

For background, I have a BS in Chemistry, am a nationally registered EMT, and am in my fourth year of a PhD in pharmacology/toxicology.

However, those qualifications aren't terribly relevant here; what's more important is the ability to look at the available resources and literature. The Wikipedia article is actually very good (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bupropion), and points to two cases from the primary literature in which patients taking Burpropion tested positive for amphetamines; in both cases follow-uP tests were negative for the illicit variants:

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10999247
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7768026 (free full text available)

Chemically this is reasonable for a broad screen that only identifies molecules by their class. It's my understanding that standard practice in the case of positive results is to repeat the test with a more focused analysis, which would be able to differentiate illicit from prescription. Amphetamines are a well studied and well understood class of drugs, and their metabolites can be easily predicted. Standard analytical techniques (e.g. chromatography-coupled-mass-spectrometry) can identity and quantify these metabolites in bodily fluids and precisely identify the parent drugs.

In addition, you should inform your parole officer of any medications you're taking, and should keep copies of your prescriptions on file. You should also be able to get your doctor to write you a note indicating that you may test positive for amphetamines, which would let the screeners know ahead of time that they would need to use a more specific test.

First off, that's false. You'd have to eat about 100 donuts to eat that many poppy seats to fail the drug test.

And on topic! You can and probably would have failed for Sedatives (Pain pills) and speed (from the upper pill). I'd explain your situation and talk to your doctor to sign off that you're prescribed those.

Here, chemists are those that do chemistry and those that do pharmacy in the community. Weird We also use 'pharmacists' for those that do pharmacy.

Chemists are also the physical structure in which pharmacists do their thang. Weird

Arguably, this is the domain of an analytical/forensic chemist or pharmacologist.

Aw, don't be a killjoy! He was being specious.

At this stage, this feels like beating a dead horse, but definitely have the prescriptions for your medication use and the contact details of your practitioner for follow up by your PO.

'Interesting' is a word that amply describes the regimen of medication you're on, you in general, and your situation. I don't mean ill by it, of course.

I highly doubt a doctor was trying to murder you. It does happen, but if he was, he was doing it terribly inefficiently...

If you keep the appropriate paperwork, there is 100% not a problem.

I honestly had the same thing happen to me, when I was a teenager I was working at a hot dog place that only had poppy seed buns, I would eat about 2-3 hot dogs a day at work, and when I went to apply for another job... tested positive for opium.

I still got the job, after explaining the scenario, but it really does happen.

Really? Poppyseed topic started in here? That's...nevermind.

Talk to your doctor and your parole officer. If you call him/her about it, they have no reason not to believe you're being honest about this.

They have plenty of reason, parole officers truly arent good people.

They will assume the word of you, always. Get a doctors note first, don't run into their office and say "I'm going to fail X test because of Y" unless you have documentation.

I dealt with a parole officer for something that wasn't drug related, and they still made their assumptions. I am dealing with them, therefor, I am the scum of the earth. Don't go there without proper documentation, because they will look down on you and they will judge you, and they decide your fate so you don't want them looking down on you.

It's not right, it's not fair, but it's how it is.

You clearly don't watch enough Mythbusters. They tested positive for opiates 30 minutes after consuming 2 poppy seed bagels.

They tested positive for the next 20 hours.

Asking people to remove quotes in their signatures is tyranny! If I can't say something just because someone's feelings are hurt then no one would ever be able to say anything! Political correctness is stupid.

Get documentation and cover your ass, talk to your attorney and make sure that you set up the proper chains to make sure you're on top of everything. At worst, if you have to go in front of a judge, you have the potential to make the parole officer look like an ass.

Ended up getting a false positive, but not for what I thought. I was put on hydrocodone/acetaminophen for a back injury.

I had a false positive for synthetic marijuana. (Well, not a false positive entirely. It took five minutes for a VERY faded line to show on my test, and I'd noticed my lines getting progressively more faded for awhile after starting the medication) For the longest time, I thought that it was because of my atypical antipsychotics that were causing it.

Forum after forum, chemist after chemist, I could not figure out for the life of me what had caused it.

    I started digging.

In the body is a endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmitter called anandamide. Through fatty acid amise hydrolase, anandamide is broken down into two chemicals, ethanolamine and arachidonic acid. Acetaminophen combines with arachidonic acid in your body to form a substance called AM404. Not sure if that rings alarm bells with anyone or not.

Am2201 was a commonly abused synthetic cannabinoid before it was banned. Acetaminophen is a synthetic cannabinoid. Man, I felt so great flopping down that research on my probation officers desk. Grin

Still clean and sober. Not gonna slip. Starting to realize just how damn smart I am too, now that I'm coming out of the fog I'd been in. I'm glad that the damage to my brain was minimal.

Oh, and I've only got two weeks of supervised probation left! Then my butt is going to be heading home, which, is something people here know I've been wanting to do for a long time. The people I got involved with around these parts did nothing but drag me down. I wanna hug my momma. Kiss my brother (Calling it now, he's gonna dickpunch me. LOL), get enrolled in college and pursue a career in a field of either chemistry or medical research.

It has been one hell of a ride. Two more weeks and it can all be over. I can't wait. HOME!
