People like it because other people told them to like it.
I think you can safely apply this to everything, but it would be better if you changed it from an absolute infinitive to something like "Most/some/many people like it because other people told them to like it."
I've watched it because I found it enjoyable (no one told me to like it ).
I had no idea it was some trolling atempt nor will change how how I view it, as a good show which I also thought foster's house for imaginary friends was a good show too.
I think people are looking way too deeply into (bronies included) its just a tv show not a way of life or something.
This thread is a shock to me. There are male fans of My Little Pony? They even have a cute name for their group? They are straight? I must be getting old...
In summation.....Star Trek wins a prolonged naval battle against superior, yet less technologically advanced, numbers, with Picard leading the assault, while Kirk takes your soul by laying out Solo and probably his manservant Chewy as well, before impregnating and ditching your Princess.
It's a video of a dude unboxing his Pony toys from McDonalds happy meals. I'd say that's a win for the trolls, especially because the guy is autistic, which makes the vid extra lulzy for people into that sort of thing.
How is this video "lulzy?" Anyone who watches this video and thinks it is funny or goes around bashing the dude unboxing his toys is a piece of ****. I'm sure I'll get infracted for this, but whatever. I cannot believe you would put this video up here just for people to view and to laugh at him. Since when is it fair game to make fun of someone for being autistic? I'm sure you're the type of person who throws around the words "gay" and "******."
On topic: Who cares what someone likes? How does that have any bearing on how you live your day to day? I am personally uninterested in the show, I don't see the appeal. But if one of my housemates watched it daily I would have no problem with it. It's their life. They are not hurting anyone by watching MLP, so just leave it alone. Just because it doesn't seem "normal" or masculine to some people doesn't give anyone the right to belittle a person for their interests. The ones who insult MLP fans are the ones who need to rethink their choices and opinions, not those who watch MLP.

So, for the fairness of the argument, I decided to sit down and watch a whole episode of MLP. For the Bronies out there, it was the episode where Fluttershy is embarrassed about her inability to fly well and the need to make a hurricane to get the water up to the cloud making machine. After watching it, I cannot fathom why this is a fad among teenagers and young adults. It was very simplistic, the story line had zero depth to it, and the art style was nothing worth noting. However, I should put forward that I don't watch cartoons at all (including Anime). I could see why this would be a good child's show, it involves friendship, supporting those friends, and your general children cartoon "funny" part (such as when the wing power being generated flung the squirrel into a tree). Perhaps it has to do with people missing their youth, perhaps it's simply an attempt to be ironic, or perhaps it's as others have stated, trolling the world at large. As it stands though, it is not something I ever intend to watch again outside of watching it with a child, and am slightly more disturbed by the few "flaming" bronies I know. Granted, the only ones I know are also magic players, but the ones I do know are socially inept teenagers and young adults. I will concede that it is possible that they are merely the exception and not the rule for bronies, but I only have the ones I know as a point of reference.
TLDR; I watched an episode for the sake of the argument and I want my 23 minutes back.

I know this is going to derail the topic, but I must ask: is a "brony" the same as a "furry"? I was at a sci-fi convention a few weeks ago and I made a statement to a friend, who I did not know was a self-proclaimed "brony", that "bronies" were the same as "furries". He basically mouthed off at me and said "I like MLP and I consider myself to be a 'brony', but I'm not going to go out to a farm and f**k a horse." I personally found the comment to be crass and unwarranted, but maybe I came off being too assumptive.
A brony is a fan of MLP who is outside the original target demographic (ie they're teenage to adult males). Literally, it is a portmanteau of "bro" and "pony" Think of brony as "Trekkie" (fan of star trek).
A furry is... complicated. You will get various answers for that one, but to quite a number of people (including people on this board), a furry is a person who wants to do the wild thing with animals. There's an extensive thread on furries somewhere around here in watercooler or the lock threads.
I wouldn't be surprised if some overlap occurred, though. Brony and furry aren't exactly mutually exclusive.
Considering there are those of us in our 30's and 40's that play a card game, video games, and read/watch things with super heroes. I'm not really too concerned about "Bronies" triggering the collapse of western civilization.
Considering, one of them, whose a rightist has a decent job in the nuclear industry or something of that nature with energy. Doesn't exactly strike me those fans are losers, either.
The people you really have to watch for are the ones that spend all their money on superfluous **** and can't handle their cash. Gambling, drinking, rampant overconsumption (which can be anything), and ect. We as a civilization have survived comic books, video games, Satanic cults in daycare centers, Pokemon, and a plethora of other storms. My Little Ponies aren't going to start a Stalinist purge against all non-My Little Pony worshippers.
So much of this.
Especially the bold.
As to the shows popularity, I don't have a good answer.
For a while I thought the grown men watching MLP was..weird. One day at my LGS they were playing it on the TV's in there so I watched a few episodes. They aren't bad by any means. They were entertaining while they were on. I just don't know if I would make it a point to buy them.
I also don't understand all the unwarrented hate towards Bronies.

While I understand the concept I tend to go the opposite route of hate: I love that people are into weird stuff that I'm not into. I feel that it somehow makes me less weird. If everyone can be weird in their own way, we are free to be individuals rather than feeling out of place for not fitting into the "norm".

Not cool
Reminds me of the Yugioh crowd at me shop.
One time during one of there little tournaments I asked some kid "why are you so interested in Yugioh?". I was compleatley sincere and was genuinely interested in what he had to say. Plus I was just trying to make some conversation since I see them quite frequently.
Immediately he went on the defensive and retorted "well, why do you like Magic?"
I just said "I don't know man, it's a fun and entertaining game I guess".
and he mimics me and says "well it's a fun and entertaining game".
I was so taken aback by his biterness I didn't even know what to say. I have noticed somewhat of an insecurity of their gaming within the Yugioh community.
Seriously, I look back to the people that are 10-12 years my younger and all I see is this type of bs. Whatever happened to being hardcore, when did it become cool to be a pansy? Whats going to happen when the chicks get older and want a real man, but all that's around is sissified pony lovers?
My parents looked and my generation and was like "wtf", now I look back at this coming one and I'm like "wtf". I guess its just the way of the world.
Kind of reminds me of the "candy raver" scene of the late 90's, early 00's. It was all about "reliving your childhood" and "dressing in bright colors and being happy."
While I see the appeal here, in a "it's unique and so off the wall that it's good" kind of cartoon... I think it's just people clutching on to wanting to be kids for longer. I've been there, and spent many a year going out of my way to dress in brighter colors, parade around in anime gear, acting impulsive and goofy, listening to super cheerful Japanese music and Happy Hardcore, etc etc...
Now I look back at pictures and just get embarassed with my 20-something year old self that I thought I was making any sort of statement. I wasn't, I was just really unwilling to grow up. When I did, it wasn't about selling out, it was about actually having opportunities that improved my life in the end. I'm happier now than I've ever been, and I really can't help but see a lot of my old self in these guys.
I'm all about letting them have their fun, but I also see that I shut the door on some opportunities in my college years by not letting myself be taken seriously.

I think you are looking at it the wrong way. For a lot of people, including myself, it is just a nice cartoon with surprising quality given the age group it is made for. Just because you enjoy a show or anything like that doesn't make you any less of a man or person.
Now I must admit that some take it far, but then again every new things/fad/popular thing always have folks that take things to far or act stupid because of it.
I watch the show and talk with others that enjoy it. A lot of these people have become my friends and I have found folks to talk to about whatever from movies to music to whatever. They even helped me through a real trying time in my life.
Main point is don't judge those just because of their hobbies, because they can still be an alright person.

When it became obvious that being a pansy/nerd/geek is not reflective of your ability to succeed in life. In fact, quite the opposite. The world today is run by the people who aren't "hardcore." I'm pretty sure Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were bullied when they were younger.

I'm not a brony, have never seen the show, and I find this statement offensive. This is how the mainsteam world views magic players, after all. "You play a kid's game? Grow up!"
And I wouldn't want a "chick" who wants a "real man." I'd think they were shallow for their inabililty to differentiate a person's harmless hobbies from the person himself.

Currently Getting Back into the swing of MTGS. Bear with me folks~
The internet is louder than it actually is. There are many tiers of the Brony Culture.
1) Trolls. These people are just joining the fad for the fun of it. They may or may not have seen the show. Those who go around spamming pony pictures everywhere are most likely of this category. A sub-group of these are the Irony-Trolls, those who actually dislike/hate the show but purposely go around spamming ponies. ... so that means they're technically not Bronies, but rolled into the Brony Fandom by outsiders, giving them a bad name (hence the reason Irony-Trolls exists)
2) Silent Watcher. People who watch the show and like it, but don't tell anyone. Also known as Closet Brony. They exist, but we don't know about them. Sorta the opposite of the trolls.
3) Typical Brony - Partakes in the Brony Community at various levels. They definitely watch the show, but other ways they participate include Pony Forums / Threads, Fansites, Livecast Chats. They aren't going around ranting "I LUV PONIES", but won't deny it when asked whether they're bronies either.
4) Active Brony (Online) - One level up from the typical Brony. They don't just participate, they create. Fanfics, fanart, parodies (Okay, some parodies are done by irony trolls, but that's not the point). They don't just discuss and fan over the show, they create original material based on that.
5) Active Brony (Offline) - BronyCon. Yes, for those unaware, there's a convention for Bronies held every... erm... I'm too sure myself. But these are probably the pinnacle of the lot, above the online actives since I do believe it is "less effort" to be active online than offline in the sense of movement. And then there's the cream of this lot, the cosplayers. I'll let them speak for themselves.
As we can see, that the impression people get from the Brony Community is either 1) or 5). The trolls that make up 90% of the rabble in terms of noise, but are actually a minority or not even part of the group, or the extremely devoted few that might be criticism-worthy at that point.
So I conclude that as a species, generally humans have not really improved our widening of the social perception and acceptance.
Not related to ponies, but I found a point that healthy, devoted cosplayers in general are seen as "socially awkward group" while "partying hard, drinking booze and getting wasted looking uncool in public" is a "social norm".
And then there's "playing card games" makes us "geeks" while watching football guys in action "crushing (or crudely put, hugging) one another" isn't wrong.
If you are offended by my opinion, I do apologise, but we all have our own opinions.
Seriously, I look back to the people that are 10-12 years my younger and all I see is this type of bs. Whatever happened to being hardcore, when did it become cool to be a pansy? Whats going to happen when the chicks get older and want a real man, but all that's around is sissified pony lovers?

I don't have a problem with it. I watched an episode because a friend told me to watch it, and it wasn't great, in my opinion, it was very predictable and I found the voice acting, especially for the "big bad" pony (Nightmare or something? I don't remember) to be just awful. However, in today's culture of Justin Bieber, Jersey Shore, and Twilight, where every song on the radio, every program on television and every site on the internet is just another monument to the pinnacle of human stupidity, it's certainly not the worst thing that people could be watching.
I guess with everything like that, whether it be My Little Pony, certain book series, or movies or singers who aren't that great, I don't really understand why people like it. I just cannot comprehend it. But we're all fairly different creatures when it comes to taste, and I have friends who can't comprehend why I like magic, or video games.
Unless people either start turning it into a sexual thing, or sacrificing virgin goats to the all mighty god of the ponies, I've got no problem with it, however odd or incomprehensible I might find it.
Just gonna put my opinion out there:
I personally think the word brony is silly. I just refer to myself as a fan of the show, pretty much in the same way I'm a fan of MTG.
Its a fun show to watch, I like the style of the animation and characters, and the fanbase is nice too. Lots of creative musical artists like Living Tombstone or Wooden Toaster and tons of fanfics where people can share stories using characters they all understand.
Dunno why there's a need to try and understand what makes people happy. If you like it, great. If not, oh well it's a TV show.

Really? I know some bronies who don't mind, and some who like it. Whatever suits you I guess.
Your last sentence there is pretty much the reason why I don't really care about the whole issue. It's just a TV show and people have differing tastes.
Just out of caution however, and to make sure these are views are should keep, you aren't sacrifice virgin goats to some great god of the ponies, right?

I agree, and maybe hardcore wasn't really the word for. But it can't be denied that the show is pretty girly. I watch a small clip due to curiosityand shuttered at the thought of a male over the age of 10 watching it.
I'm not a brony, have never seen the show, and I find this statement offensive. This is how the mainsteam world views magic players, after all. "You play a kid's game? Grow up!"
I couldn't disagree more. Everyone that know me on a personal level (and some that don't) knows I play Magic. Sure I take the occasional jab for, but it's far less then what I would take if the found me watching and enjoying a show intended for adolescent girls.
And I wouldn't want a "chick" who wants a "real man." I'd think they were shallow for their inabililty to differentiate a person's harmless hobbies from the person himself.
Tell me, on which date do you introduce your love for pink pony cartoons? (yes, I know you don't watch)
Bronies, or frankly any male above the age of 12 that watches this are just sad sad pathetic people.
Not trying to bash, but what exactly is your reasoning? The same could be said about anyone that enjoys anything outside of it's intended age group or gender.
That would be like making fun of an adult woman or any girl/lady for liking G.I.Joe.
You can enjoy something without being crazy about it. I enjoy the show and talk to others that also like the show, but 90% of our conversations are normally not about the show, but stuff like video games, Magic, philosophy, religion, and many other topics.
I agree, and maybe hardcore wasn't really the word for. But it can't be denied that the show is pretty girly. I watch a small clip due to curiosityand shuttered at the thought of a male over the age of 10 watching it.
It really isn't that girly. It has more lessons for kids in general rather than anything truly girly, although it does have it's girly moments.
I couldn't disagree more. Everyone that know me on a personal level (and some that don't) knows I play Magic. Sure I take the occasional jab for, but it's far less then what I would take if the found me watching and enjoying a show intended for adolescent girls.
Really no difference between enjoying one thing or another, but you are entitled to your opinion.
Tell me, on which date do you introduce your love for pink pony cartoons? (yes, I know you don't watch)
Sooner or later your girlfriend/boyfriend will see you watching it and frankly it shouldn't really bother that person. It is just a show. Unless someone goes truly crazy for it, but that goes along with almost every new thing or fad. Remember when a kid stabbed another kid for a Charizard card when Pokemon TCG was around? Or when someone changes their name to their favorite D&D character? How about when people trample over others to get to a Furby, Elmo, a toaster for $4, or whatever new thing people want during Christmas.
I must say that I met my first girlfriend by watching the show and meeting her, (no she wasn't a 10 year old girl) won some money by creating a pretty easy t-shirt design, and met some new and interesting people that are 34 year old guy that enjoy the show with his nieces while he goes to school to be a doctor to a pregnant woman that teaches high school English. Of course there are teenagers, people in their twenties, and plenty of others. These folks have helped me through my recent troubles just by having somewhere to talk and get plenty of second opinions.
I wouldn't be any more worried about Bronies than I am Trekies, cos players, LARPers, or Magic players.
Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.
I think you can safely apply this to everything, but it would be better if you changed it from an absolute infinitive to something like "Most/some/many people like it because other people told them to like it."

This entire post has raised my respect for you, nd I have to agree with the points made.
If we take the context of this thread, and change every instance of pony stuff with Magic stuff, it could read the same way, about us.
Good job guys

What makes you more of a "real man" than someone who watches MLP?

I guess with everything like that, whether it be My Little Pony, certain book series, or movies or singers who aren't that great, I don't really understand why people like it. I just cannot comprehend it. But we're all fairly different creatures when it comes to taste, and I have friends who can't comprehend why I like magic, or video games.
Unless people either start turning it into a sexual thing, or sacrificing virgin goats to the all mighty god of the ponies, I've got no problem with it, however odd or incomprehensible I might find it.

I watch a small clip due to curiosity and shuttered at the thought of a male over the age of 10 watching it.
I couldn't disagree more. Everyone that know me on a personal level (and some that don't) knows I play Magic. Sure I take the occasional jab for, but it's far less then what I would take if the found me watching and enjoying a show intended for adolescent girls.
Tell me, on which date do you introduce your love for pink pony cartoons? (yes, I know you don't watch)
See cartoon for adolescent girls.
It really isn't that girly. It has more lessons for kids in general rather than anything truly girly, although it does have it's girly moments.
Really no difference between enjoying one thing or another, but you are entitled to your opinion.
I think that about sums it up.
