Okay, first of all I just want to say that I do have some programming experience. However, I don't have any experience in HTML, JS, or CSS and I recently had a close friend who brought to my attention the idea for a text-based mmorpg. I really want to help him with the programming, but I really have no idea where to start. I do have access to materials and to other people that could be of help me with the programming needed. And before anyone mentions needing a server, I already have that figured out.
It's not so hard. I once played a text based RPG that was using a simple forum with a thread for each characters and a tavern where the adventurers could meet. I remember the name was Green Dragon Adventures or something like that. Been a while since the game stopped (GM had to stop the game due to lack of time and personal health issues).
So it's fairly simple, get a free forum, write the handbooks (or use DnD 3.5 handbooks), start a game, expect it to take a lot of time.

Casual crazy magic player, otaku maniac, unrully cosplayer, what did you expect me to be?
If you want to do anything which involves language, you want regular expressions. I would therefore recommend looking into Python, which is a boss at handling regular expressions, and the syntax of Python is nice and clean as well, which helps immensely.
Additionally: you should take a look at inform. It's a language built specifically for making text-based adventures and the like. Although I don't think it has multiplayer functionality, you should totally look at how the language is built. It's very complete in how it functions.
