Just got a new PC, since my old one is busted. DVD/flash drives on it don't work and I don't have an external hard drive to work with here. I have a massive music library to move, but no way to do it. But, both the old and the new PC are connected to the same network. Besides torrenting (which could be legal trouble) is there any way to transfer all of these files across the network from 1 PC to the other?
Have you looked into buying a shell? You can use something like this to effectively make your old hard drive your new external hard drive. It's what I did when my last computer's motherboard died.
An external hard drive is literally just the hard drive you'd have in your computer in it's own case. Getting a shell is only like $20 and you're set. I recommend formatting the now-external hard drive once you transfer the files you want to keep over to your new computer, and then backing up your files to it. This gets rid of all the space the operating system and programs you aren't using anymore take up.
Jax13x's plan is good. You could also see if you have a secondary (or teriary) HD bay in your computer. Since windows is basically impossible with getting info from old HDs, I'd suggest using a USB stick with some Linux form on it, transfer your music to the new hard drive and then you can do with the old HD whatever you want. An advantage of this over Jay13x's plan is that direct disc-to-disc transfer speeds are a lot faster than disc-to-usb in almost all cases. It's a lot more of a hassle though. What size of library are we talking about? Anything under a 100 gigs and I wouldn't even bother with my version.

If you can deal with transferring 2 gigs at a time, DropBox is a free and easy way to move all of your personal media and effects from one computer to another.

If you're doing this, you might as well just do a direct transfer between the two computers.

I mean, I guess so, yeah. I'm surprised that didn't occur to me.
Is there anything preventing you from just Cut+Paste-ing the music collection over the network, Ljoss? Or even just making a shared network folder and dumping it all in there?
