I had the scare of my life just a few minutes back, when I started up my computer and saw the standard windows 7 background and all the general bull***** you have when using a pc for the first time. I figured it was my Personal Data which had been corrupted or something, so I went to work to copy the necessary stuff (browser-related, mostly). However, I would like to avoid this in the future. Is there any rhyme or reason to when you get these corruptions and what are things to do to avoid it?

We have laboured long to build a heaven, only to find it populated with horrors.
It sounds like the computer reverted to the earlier version, I've no idea why. Windows allows you to take a 'snapshot' of your system and save it to revert to if you mess something up(usually the only way to recover your system after a particularly nasty virus). I believe it automatically backs up the system when you first log in.
In general, to avoid problems that cause data corruption turn your computer off when you aren't using it, make sure to shut it down through windows rather than using the power button, make sure to do both virus and malware scans and use compressed air to get rid of the dust inside periodically.

It did not, actually. It made a temporary user profile, which I think is even a stranger thing to do.

I tried to recover to an earlier timepoint (I don't like messing with this stuff too much), but I had no recovery points, which I thought was strange, because it indeed should at least have the default windows stuff I think.

Always do this.

Yeah. I may skimp on my malware scans a bit. And I should open the case once. Haven't done so in a year. Thanks!
