My phone is currently running iOS v7.0.1. I wish it were v6.x. (Nearly everything's too different for me to ever like.)
I can't work out all of the pros and cons for updating to v7.0.4, but it seems that an update to v7.0.4 will result in an intractable e-mail manager and very intense battery usage.
I'm sorry but, within the framework of the question, should I update my phone's firmware?
I don't mean to snap at you at the slightest, but saying 'buy a Samsung Galaxy (or Sony Xperia)' is not a reasonable response. I mean, what if I already have those as well and I want to know whether I should update or should not update my iPhone's firmware?
Email seems fine to me (I am using 7.0.4 on an iPhone 4). The intense battery usage apparently happens only when updating via WiFi (instead of doing it through a USB connection and iTunes). While I did notice excessive battery usage (as I updated over WiFi), I managed to fix this by accessing Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.
That said, as I used 7.0.1 for just a short while before updating my phone, I can't really tell if 7.0.4 is significantly better than 7.0.1 (or vice versa). The above is just meant to address your initial concerns.
Hope that that is a more helpful response -- lets not start a pointless iPhone v. Samsung fanboy-ing / fangirl-ing here.

Thanks, fzian. This has been informative.
Apparently there are serious issues with the screen sensitivity. Can you shed any light on this, thanks?

And definitely. I am glad that you appreciate this.

I have not faced any issues with screen sensitivity with iOS 7.0.4 I think the only significant changes I saw between iOS 7.0.1 are: -
My home button sensitivity was fixed after I updated from iOS 7.0.1
Battery usage increased after I updated to iOS 7.0.4. However, as mentioned, I did a quick online search and fixed it.
I am sure that there are more differences between 7.0.1 and 7.0.4 but as a relatively casual user, I suppose the above two are all that really matters.
If you do decide to upgrade to 7.0.4, I would advice you to do so via iTunes rather than over WiFi to avoid the problems I faced above. That said, even if you are obliged to upgrade it over WiFi, it is not really much of an issue anyway.
Yeah, so I updated my iPhone via my computer (apparent you risk losing things while updating via WiFi). It works like a charm compared to 7.0.1, for which I experienced too much memory hogging and crashing of apps.
I can't say I like the sensitivity of the home button or the touch screen.

Could you please clarify or further explain this to me?
What was the precise issue and how did fix it?
After updating to iOS 7.0.4 (via WiFi), my battery usage increased dramatically (think a 10% drain despite being on standby after 8 hours). I fixed that by resetting my phone (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all Settings)). There were other ways of fixing that issue though given that resetting all settings did the trick, I did not bother trying the rest. Given that you updated via iTunes though, battery drain probably wouldn't be an issue with you.
Are you saying that the sensitivity of your home button and/or touch screen deteriorated after the update? I did not experience any of those issues -- nor did I come across those issues while browsing the forums -- so I probably won't be of much help here.

Hey, sorry for the late reply.
My experience of the touch screen of v7.x iOS is inferior to that of the v6.x iOS touch screen. It is also more prone to crashing and freezing, unlike the preceding version.
The home button is more or less equally sensitive. At least there's that.

Best advice would be to ask other Iphone users you actually know if it's worth the time to update the iphone firmware.
