I currently use a Sony Viao with a NVIDIA Geforce 540M. It has served me awhile for all manner of uses, but over the last couple of months I've been getting intermittent framerate hitching with just about any game that renders 3D models. It will chug along at 40-60 FPS and then, every 30 seconds or so it will drop down to like 10-15 FPS for about 5 seconds. What's strange is it happens at pretty regular intervals. Games are not unplayable, it's just really irritating to deal with.
I've tried updating my drivers. I used performance enhancing software. I've lowered the graphics on some games to minimum settings and resolution. Hell, I even performed a factory reset on my laptop at one point. Nothing seems to work. I've read on other forums that this is a known problem with the 540M, but I honestly don't know what to do at this point. It was working just fine before the summer. It's not a pressing concern, but I'd like to try and deal with it if I can. I was hoping someone here might know something I don't.
You can always try and search for hardware reasons....
is something heating up?
clean your coolers, check if the memory connectors aren't loose or rusty...
that can be hard to do on a laptop, but if the performance just went down for no reason, you should look everywhere
