Fusion Elemental is like riding a pony, which probably doesn't sound dangerous, except that in this case the pony is 300 feet tall and covered in chainsaws, and to get on the pony you have to take an elevator with sixteen live cougars.
In my opinion, the best way to learn at first is in a class. This gives you a structured approach that helps get your fundamentals down. After that, you should consider more schooling and/or more in-depth books.
My approach, after not having programmed Java in 6 years, was simply cracking open my old Dietel textbook and reading the first X chapters (up to the GUI stuff). I never did any examples; but, I picked up on the language pretty fast when I actually needed to complete a project for class.
