WINOOSKI, Vt. —A sign on a lamp post at the bottom of the Winooski Circle displayed the words "Yield Sneakers Bacon" until Friday morning. The bistro owners took it down.
It got there as part of "Operation Bloom."

A city program put it in place to keep its flower beds beautiful. If businesses do some gardening they can post an advertisement where they do it, but the word "bacon" on the Sneakers Bistro sign started a discussion about diversity on the Winooski Front Porch Forum.
It started with a post from one woman who wrote that the sign was insensitive to those who do not consume pork. She said as a Muslim she is personally offended by it.
Wait, what? I get that every neighborhood has its crazies, but why would they actually remove it? Why would they feel the need to apologize about something as stupid as this? Wow.

In a land where political correctness has run amok, offending people, whether inadvertent or not, has become one of the gravest sins. Suddenly everyone has "feelings" about the stupidest sh*#.
I think all of the neighbors of the complainer should have a neighborhood wide pork bbq cook-off. I don't care what sort of halal, kosher or vegetarian diet one follows, if a restaurant wants to advertise bacon specials, that restaurant is completely within its rights to do so. No where in the Constitution does it state "you have the right to not be offended" people need to get over themselves and let the rest of us enjoy our lives without their constant *****ing about everything(as I ***** about people *****ing). I'm offended by people that are easily offended. If life bothers them so much they should lock themselves up indoors and never participate in the human drama called life. I'm now offended that I can't find out through advertising that Sneakers Bistro is running a bacon menu special. That crazy person is now impeding on my(and Sneakers Bistro) pursuit of happiness, which IS guaranteed by the Constitution.
As a white American I'm supposed to be culturally sensitive to people from other places. When I travel abroad I'm supposed to learn how to not offend the natives of the countries I'm visiting.
So then, why don't foreigners that move here have to be culturally sensitive to our way of life? This is America, and we eat bacon. Deal with it. It's not like it was a poster of bikini clad hotties butchering a pig in Satan's name, it was the word "bacon", and if someone finds that offensive they need to pull their head out.
I'm sure this diatribe of mine will be misconstrued and taken out of context. I have no problem with different people, their beliefs, practices, etc. What I do have a problem with, is individuals and groups making life a little more miserable for the rest of us that just don't care about whatever it is that bothers them. To quote John Travolta in Pulp Fiction "bacon is good!"
Something doesn't smell right here. It doesn't seem like anyone would actually take down a sign over a stupid complaint like that. I suspect there's something more to this.

Well, while the above may be a little over the top, I don't think it's unreasonable to be polite to other people. There is a reason Americans have a reputation for being rude loudmouths worldwide, and the kind of attitude you're describing is a large part of it.

My guess would be the owners saw an opportunity for a publicity stunt that appears to have backfired (their Yelp has blown up with negative reviews). That or all of the recent media poo storms over other silly comments/donations made them hyper sensitive and they hoped to quietly take down the sign before they had some kind of boycott on their hands.

lol. Might want to look that one up.
So, yeah, I'd say that the pursuit of happiness is guaranteed in the constitution.

eh, not really, but I'll allow it, since the constitution doesn't expressly give that. lol.
EDIT: wow, this is the third thread in a row that I'm talking to you. I think I'm detecting a pattern... lol.

It's because I'm a fantastic conversationalist, lol.
And I was actually joking about Perodequeso's slip and Tiax's catching it.
