-Last year was the tenth anniversary of the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series (the second television series), this year is the 30th anniversary of the original comics, and three years from now shall be the 30th anniversary of the 1987 television series (the first television series that helped the franchise to gain mainstream popularity).
-This year is the 10th anniversary of the Red Sox winning the World Series for the first time in 86 years, and it has been six years since they won again in 2008.
-Next year shall be the 20th anniversary of the end of Calvin and Hobbes.
-It has now been 14 years since Disturbed and Linkin Park released their debut albums in 2000.
-Survivor has been running since 2000, and has now lasted for 28 seasons.
-Eiichiro Oda has been writing One Piece for seventeen years, now; three years from now shall be the twentieth anniversary of the series.
-This year is the 30th anniversary of Dragon Ball.
-Last year was the 20th anniversary of Power Rangers.
-Remember when the Pokemon franchise first came to the United States? It has now been eleven years since the Ruby and Sapphire versions were released, fourteen years since the Gold and Silver versions were released, and sixteen years since the Red and Green/Blue versions were released in this country. Most present-day fans of the franchise are younger than the franchise itself (that is akin to how the Mario and Legend of Zelda franchises are older than I am, if only by two or three years).
-Next year shall be the tenth anniversary of YouTube.
-Former president Bill Clinton has now been out of office for thirteen years.
-Does anyone here remember Discovery Zone? I had so much fun playing there as a child, and I am sad that it no longer exists.
-In two years, it shall be the 20th anniversary of Space Jam.
-It has been thirteen years since the release of Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracles of Seasons were released and twenty-one years since Link's Awakening was released (making last year its 20th anniversary).
-It has now been twenty-two years since Wario first appeared in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins, and twenty years since his first appearance as a playable character in Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land (making this year that game's 20th anniversary).
I remember playing commander keen. Zapping martians was fun. That dog boss was a bastard though.
Commander Keen was, and still is, one of my favorite video games ever! I played nearly every game that Apogee Software, the company that released Commander Keen, made, and all of them were the epitome of awesomeness, to me at that time. It is so unfortunate that they are not as well-remembered as the old Nintendo games. Also, if you are referring to the final Vorticon in the first episode, you defeat it not by shooting at it directly (as it is invulnerable to your character's blaster), but by shooting the chain that holds up the block over its head, thereby crushing it.
30th Anniversary of The Toxic Avenger.
30+ years of Iron Maiden, Slayer, Venom, Manowar, Motorhead and other classic metal bands.
40 years of Ozzy Osbourne, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and other influential rockers.

Oh yes, I remember this.
I remember thinking "Holy ***** Diablo 2 takes up so much space!"
Although back in the day it was X-Wing/TIE Fighter that ruled my life. I actually recently got X-Wing Alliance reinstalled on my PC with the big graphics update, it's pretty awesome.
Holy crap were those games awesome, TIE Fighter specifically. So, so good.
I was born in '77 and will be 37 in 2.5 months, does that mean I don't belong in this thread?
An excellent thread. A bit depressing, but also wonderfully nostalgic. Thank you DemonDragonJ.

(about the English language) It's kinda like a raft that was cobbled together from parts of three different boats and since then has been kept barely afloat with crude repairs every time a leak appeared.

I think you're official entitled to this smiley:
I really loved TIE Fighter. I was never particularly good at it (I always gave myself infinite life). Even playing X-Wing Alliance, I'm realizing there is almost an element of randomness to the AI as to whether or not I die horribly or make it through a missing.

Want to put it out there that the Red Sox won the World Series in 2013.
Although I was born in 91, who hear remembers the Beta Max? Or Colecovision, my dad used to have a 5 inch CRT mounted where your glove box was supposed to be, hooked up to a colecovision. Made for awesome road trips, and epic battles for front seat.

Does anyone else use the term "videotape" to refer to recording things on smartphones?
Because I do, and always catch myself.
My boss told me when I was listening to my iPhone, "I'll let you listen to your tapes." That got us into a discussion on the Sony Walkman, and he still has an 8 track player.
Anyone else remember making a collection of your favorite songs by sitting next to the radio with a tape recorder, waiting for them to play the song you wanted, and then hoping no one around you made noise when you were recording it? That was my iTunes store when I was a kid.;)
First game system my family owned was an Atari 2600, first computer was a Commodore 128.
And any time I go to see a band I've been a fan of for years, and am surrounded by fans who have been alive for fewer years than I've been a fan of that band - that tends to bring on a pretty strong 'holy crap I'm old' vibe.

My radio WAS a tape recorder, and I remember trying to time the recording right and hoping the DJ didn't start talking in the last bit of the song.
hehe Jay I also did that until a little windows program called winamp came along and all of that changed. In the early days of the Internet bootlegging was hard. Remember the original sony walkmans? Remember actually needing refillable batteries for things?

32 years old and I feel old everyday. I'm sure when I'm actually old, I'll laugh at my younger self. Recently - about two weeks ago, I think - it was the last run of Saturday Morning Cartoons ANYWHERE. That's it. No more Saturday Morning Cartoons. No more PJs and sugar cereals at 9am on a Saturday. Darn kids and their newfangled "streaming".
Ever played Cards Against Humanity? Someone played "A Bop-It" for the card "Cosmo suggests bringing ____ into the bedroom to spice up your sex life". I can never look at a Bop It in the same way again.
I also can't stop thinking "And the very best thing of all is there's a counter on this ball!" for that damn commercial for the "Skip-It". How old is THAT commercial?
There was one card that was something like "What did the U.S. troops drop for relief to the children of Afghanistan?" and I played "A Bop-It" and I won that round, because the image of dropping a single Bop-It to a country full of kids was absolutely hilarious to everyone.

In honor of the new year, I am reviving this thread (and I hope that I do not get into trouble for doing so), since I have new items that I wish to add to it.
-This year is the fifteenth anniversary of Titan A.E., the 20th anniversary of Toy Story, and the 30th anniversary of Disney's The Black Cauldron.
-Last year (2014) was the 25th anniversary of Disney's The Little Mermaid and next year (2016) shall be the 25th anniversary of Disney's Beauty and the Beast and the 20th anniversary of Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
-This year is the 20th anniversary of Windows 95.
-Remember when 1 gigabyte was considered to be a great amount of storage capacity, or when 1 gigahertz was considered to be a very fast operating frequency? Remember when 800 by 600 pixels was considered to be a massive resolution for a monitor (that was back when the default resolution for a computer monitor was 640 by 480 pixels; today, 800 by 600 is the smallest resolution that most monitors can display; today's monitors cannot even display resolutions of 640 by 480 or below)?
-Remember when MTV actually played music videos (I know that this one is somewhat of a cliche, but I wished to mention it nevertheless)?
-This iconic image of Britney Spears was taken 16 years ago, when she was only 18.
-Last year was the tenth anniversary of the death of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbot, the guitarist of Pantera.
-Next year shall be the 30th anniversary of the death of Cliff Burton, Metallica's original bassist. Jason Newsted, Metallica's second bassist, resigned from the band in 2001, fourteen years ago, and it has now been twelve years since Robert Trujillo became the band's third and current bassist.
-It has already been nearly seven years since Metallica released Death Magnetic, the album that marked their return to their original musical style (this example is not as extreme as some of the others, but I still wished to mention it).
-Remember when there were only 150 species of Pokemon?
-The year 2000 is as far away from this year as is 2030 (fifteen years in each direction).
-Judgement Day in the Terminator franchise, the day that Skynet became self-aware and started to exterminate all humans, was originally stated to occur on August 29, 1997, a date that was still in the distant future when the first film was released in 1984. However, that date is now long in the past, and no artificial intelligence started any wars on that day (as far as we know).
-This year is the twentieth anniversary of Batman Forever and the 30th anniversary of The Breakfast Club.
-On that subject, Brian Johnson (the "brainy" student from The Breakfast Club) would likely be arrested today, rather than merely sent to detention, for bringing a gun to school, and the principal, Richard Vernon, would quite possibly be arrested today for his sadistic and tyrannical treatment of the students.
-This year is the 25th anniversary of Commander Keen (the character currently in my avatar); if he aged realistically, he would now be 33 years old (since he is eight years old in his games).
-Next year shall be the 20th anniversary of the Nintendo 64 console and also of Space Jam. On that subject, Michael Jordan retired from professional basketball in 2003, twelve years ago.
-This year is the 25th anniversary of the first Home Alone film and the first live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. On that subject, Kieran Culkin, the younger brother of Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin, who played Fuller McCallister in those films, is now thirty-two years old!
-This year is the 30th anniversary of Megadeth's debut album, Killing in My Business...and Business is Good! and also of the North American release of the Nintendo Entertainment System, the console that is often credited with reviving the video game industry after the video game crash of 1983 and one of the best-selling home video game consoles of all time.
-Next year shall be the 30th anniversary of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and if the title character attempted to skip school today, the great prevalence of the internet and recording devices would likely foil his plans, although, on the other hand, few authority figures would at all care today (from what I have observed) if a student was truant from school.
