Hoping the whole Ebola case thing does turn into a giant panic and indirectly lead to "the end of the world".
Ebola Syndrome is wtf. Recommend the google.
So, I heard today that the first case of ebola in the town I live in is likely. The hospital down the road has isolated a patient displaying ebola symptoms.

Goodie...
Let me make an important distinction that's often misunderstood by the general public: there is a huge difference between 'suspected cases' and actual cases. A suspected case is just someone who has met the criteria. As flu season goes on, there is going to be a TON of 'suspected' Ebola patients popping up everywhere. As for the case you're talking about Iso, the only criteria met was that the individual in question had recently traveled from Liberia.
This goes for everyone: don't let the media hysteria fool you. Ebola is real and scary, but you can protect yourself mostly by just not touching sweaty people. People with Ebola aren't contagious until they begin showing symptoms. Healthcare providers are going to have an abundance of caution with anything that looks like Ebola (like the Flu), and so you're going to see a lot of news articles on suspected cases as the Flu season progresses.
I'm not terribly concerned about it. I'm just staying on my toes since I work in an environment where I come into contact with dozens of people a day, not all of which have the best hygiene standards.
Can not edit on my phone so EBWoDP: The case was confirmed non-ebola.

Only place worse than the epicenter of Homulilly might be in the eye of Kriemhild Gretchen. Either way, both of those locations have larger problems than Ebola if you know the reference
Ebola is a terrifying disease but the misinformation and scare campaign in the media doesn't help anyone in my opinion.
It's reactions like (and others extoling his reporting) this that make me think I'm fundamentally different from the rest of humanity.
I don't get what the big deal was, or why his commentary was anything special. The guy merely stated the facts and spoke in an authoritative yet neutral and tempered tone.
Apparently the rest of humanity like to freak out and needs to be reminded not to. They like it when someone speaks to them in a calm demeanor while offering rational reasons for that calm demeanor. I need to remind myself of that sometimes.
He stated the extent of what is reasonable given our current knowledge. For the most part I agree with his assessments. Ebola does not become infectious until symptoms start showing. But the problem is that is
a murky line. We don't know exactly when symptoms start showing.
If the symptoms of the nurse who traveled on the airline were enough to be infectious, then you potentially have a lot more who were exposed to the disease.
I'm not exactly losing sleep over this possibility and it's very unlikely anything is going to come of this. But it also wouldn't surprise me if more people beyond the initial nurses and travelers additionally contracted ebola.

I completely see where you're coming from, but I think people are liking this video because so many people in his position are not doing their job correctly to properly inform the public. Seeing someone with this calm, collected candor is refreshing; in spite of the usual nonsense we get. As for panic, I had one guy at work try to convince me that Ebola was airborne (which it's not.) People have the tendency to be irrational idiots, especially when they're in large numbers and are all afraid of something.
So according to the CDC, Ebola can also be transmitted through sneezing yet there won't be a vaccine available to the public for it until next year.

If the person sneezes directly into your eyes then yes, technically it could be airborne in the same way vomit is airborne.
Please don't mistake academic technicalities for reality. These academics really need to realize the vast majority of the general public isn't going to understand the distinction they're making, and they just wind up panic needlessly.
Ebola is not a super-virus. It can't survive more than maybe six hours outside of your body except in very rare circumstances. Even if Ebola were to become an Epidemic in the United States, more people would still die of the Flu than of Ebola.

Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
Things Americans have a better chance of dying from than Ebola:
Car accidents (33k deaths a year)
Suicide (39k deaths a year)
Air pollution (200k deaths a year)
Complications from using prescription medicine (108k deaths a year)
Influenza and pneumonia (53k)
Your job (4k deaths in 2013)
Pregnancy (800 deaths per year in 2013)
Medical malpractice (98k deaths per year)
Preventable errors at hospitals (210k deaths per year)
I'm excluding deaths that normally occur due to the aging process like cancer, heart disease and stroke. But you get the point that your doctor and the air you breathe have a greater chance of killing you than Ebola.
the air you breathe has a greater chance of killing you than Ebola.
I agree with this. Ebola is getting too much of a bad rap. What we really should be scared of is wanton violations of civil rights in the name of "public safety". All it takes is some idiot politician claiming that public safety is more important than the right to self determination, or freedom from being detained against will, and boom, real ugly situation.
The only thing to be scared of is the evolution or mutation of the Virus while it transfers from host to host. And what that might bring.
The current types of hemorrhagic fever are very lethal yes. But like Jay13x stated. It kills the host quick enough and is debilitating enough that it can only really spread effectively in areas without the proper infrastructure and healthcare in addition to bad hygiene. We here in America go to the restroom in CLEAN water. Most places that are effected by the virus have no such facilities. Hygiene and infection prevention is key to mitigating any outbreak. When that training, education and resource doesn't exist, you will see an outbreak.
Sure we might get some cases here and there in the States. But after the Texas debacle the Gov has it on lock now. Still doesn't mean it cant spread if a patient doesn't come forward for what ever number of reasons.

They closed three schools in Central Texas because a few kids shared a plane with the nurse that had no business going to Cleveland.
Also, there is a nurse whistleblower at Presby who said there were HUGE lapses in protocol.
