A few collegues and I recently just noticed a pattern in the recent hiring selections. Long story short, within the past year, 6 people have been hire due to growth in the department (I was the 2nd of the 6). 4-5 years ago, the whole department was women (except for managers --- they were all males, yes every departments manager were males). I was told this department started with 3 women and 1 male manager. There are now 12 of us and 2 male floor managers with a male area manager above those 2.
The pattern has been male, female, male, female, etc since the girl joined before me (the first of the 6). Also, they have a balance of minority and military background people (in the group and the last 6). All 3 of the managers have military backgrounds. When they were seeking a 2nd floor manager (before my time) everyone in the department interviewed. However, they brought someone in from outside of the company who was just in the Navy. Sucked for the people who have been in this position for 10-15 years.
Also, there is another group in accounting that I chat with and one day she complained to me. She is much older with a daughter about to enter college. (This lady has been with the company for 20+ years and in this position for at least 5). Basically, in her department, it was her, her manager and 2 6-12 month contractors. Her manager got promoted and she was doing both jobs for about 3 months. Supposedly, they were interviewing that whole time. They brought someone in from a way different part of the company and she had to train her new manager. Her manager is a large black sassy lady. Sweet though most of the time but she knows when to get business done.
1) Your group's managers appear to be targeting gender diversity.
2) Your group's managers (who have a military background) may be over hiring personnel with a military background.
3) I'm not sure. Perhaps that the accountant might have been a candidate for the manager role?
On the last, most companies will require that job reqs are posted for a minimum time period - it seems odd that she wouldn't have submitted an application and interviewed for the job she was performing.
Out of curiosity, what industry do you work in?
