This isn't so much real world advice as a pleas for information. This will be my first opportunity to vote this year and I am a little in the dark as to what the politicians are running on, what their track record looks like, etc. Therefore, I was wondering, who are all of you voting for this year? Not old enough to vote? Who would you vote for? Why do you make that decision? All I ask is that you make intelligent statements here and as hard as it may be, please do not dissolve into name calling and mud slinging. I'm looking for hard facts and solid opinions, preferably backed by aforementioned facts. Looking forward to seeing what y'all have to say on the topic!
I chose not to vote in federal elections. I am from a state that has voted the same way for decades so i can predict the winner from my state with 100% accuracy. So my vote is worthless no matter who I vote for.
I personally believe that voting distracts from your only real chance of changing the system, protesting. If you really want your voice to be heard you will accomplish far more if you find causes you care about and are willing to fight for. Your vote on the other hand will yield little to no results
I'm throwing in my vote for Gary Johnson. I don't much care for the man himself, but I am a fan of the Libertarian party. Not that I expect him to remotely win, but I'm in a similar situation as Algebra: I live in a state that always votes overwhelmingly for Democrats, so throwing in a Republican vote is fruitless anyway. I may as well vote my conscience, and I'm hoping enough people will do the same thing and shake up the two-party status quo.
That said, as a life-long Republican, who has always voted Republican up until this election, I can't stand Romney, and if my only two choices were down to Romney/Obama, I think I'd vote for Obama. Romney doesn't strike me (in terms of his voting record, rather than what he says) as radically different than Obama. With Obama, I at least know how he has been as president. I'm not a fan of his healthcare bill (in implementation, not as an idea), but on many other issues I don't know that Republicans have a lot to complain about. For example, he didn't shut down gitmo, he didn't immediately shut down Iraq/Afghanistan, and he hasn't enacted gun control policies (in fact has signed policy allowing carry in national parks).
What Romney says, does not match up with his voting record; I don't trust the guy. And Ryan? Way too far to the right, and strikes me as uncompromising. I'd really like to see our two parties start to compromise and work together: no more "they wouldn't work with us at this point" followed by counter-criticisms of "oh yeah? You didn't work with us on this!". Leave the past in the past, and move forward.

So, like me, you would want a return to the post-Republican Revolution of 1994 era of Clinton's two terms? When Clinton and Republicans met in the center to actually do good stuff for the country?
Obama does make me sincerely miss the days of Clinton. Although I have to question how well Clinton and the Republicans would have done in the 90s if this nation hadn't be riding the dot com bubble.

Should've been fine - I'm pretty sure all this vitriol has started because of the rise of 24/7 news and blogs (from all the outlets - except MAYBE CNN [it didn't seem bad in memories of 15 years ago - but that's 15 years ago...]) - you started seeing it pick up towards the cluster that's modern politics during his second term.
Until people get bored of the constant 24/7 news channel's narratives that they constantly want to shove at their bases and go back to getting their news elsewhere this will continue - I've got a feeling their days are waning however - and we'll at least see a push towards more reporting with fewer OpEd content however soon. (I'm guessing we're about 8 years away from all the networks coming back to sanity ranges, 4 years for FOXNews - think they're under too much criticism that once they're gonna reach a tipping point sooner [not saying they're worse, but the general perception of them is] with the other networks getting in line by the following election since a truly Fair and Balanced FoxNEWS that sticks to news almost exclusively would be putting their ratings into the gutter)

I hope you're right, Vaclav. But it seems to me that FOX (and MSNBC to a lesser degree) have a rabid, loyal and lucrative base that will keep them churning out the BS for a long time to come.

Funny you mention this, because I'm in the exact same situation too. Obama is virtually guaranteed to win Oregon, so I'm voting for Gary Johnson all the way. It's a shame that Johnson was basically shut out of the Republican debates last year; he was an excellent two-term governor in New Mexico that was well-liked despite New Mexico being an overwhelmingly Democratic state. He's fiscally conservative and socially liberal, which is pretty much a perfect fit for me.
I hope you're right, Vaclav. But it seems to me that FOX (and MSNBC to a lesser degree) have a rabid, loyal and lucrative base that will keep them churning out the BS for a long time to come.

I wouldn't really say MSNBC is to a lesser degree - it's just.... less aggressive... almost everything there is pushed, just a little more quite and insidiously. But honestly even CNN which is the "best of them all" when it comes to impartiality, has some clear leanings as well.
Don't get me wrong, I'm being optimistic with that estimate, but I can guarantee media in 30 years will absolutely be going back towards the delayed super-factchecked articles that were prevalent in the 80's/early 90's when I was first getting politically involved - if I was in a pessimistic mood I'd probably say it'll likely be at the end of that spectrum though.
But really, even a few Republicans in the past couple years have started blasting FoxNEWS - so the tables are already beginning to shift (Huntsman did I know)
Interesting link BTW Surging Chaos - not surprised the candidate it put me with, was surprised how lopsidedly though.
I'm voting Obama all the way. We can't afford another republican, and voting for an independent is pretty much wasting your vote, like usual. But here are the two party's platforms.
Obama:
-Has strengthened the economy from what it was like at the end of the Bush years (the numbers prove it). It still isn't what what we want it to be, but it's impossible to completely fix the worst crash since the great depression in just 4 years, especially with republicans blocking out every bill he tries to pass (ie the jobs bill).
-Reduced our dependance on foreign oil.
-Created more jobs that have to do with alternative energy.
-Didn't let Detroit go bankrupt. Revived the American auto industry.
-Made it easier for students to pay for college.
-Is the first president in history to come out in favor of gay marriage.
-Did multiple things to increase federal funding for abortion and stem cell research. Supports a women's right to choose, and contraception.
-Passed Obamacare, which enables people like me to stay on their parent's health insurance until age 26. Lets people like me with pre-existing conditions get coverage. Made health insurance affordable for lots of uninsured Americans. In the long run, Obamacare is profitable. Will save us money in the long run.
-Will never turn medicare into a voucher program.
-Ended the war in Iraq, and is on the way to ending the war in Afghanistan. Killed Osama Bin Laden.
Now let's look at Mitt Romney...
-Wants to go back to trickle down economics. The same policies used during the Bush era that caused our recession. Gives tax breaks to millionares who outsource jobs.
-Claims to "believe in America", but outsources jobs, and has a bank account in the caymen islands, which is a tax haven. Dodged the draft when he was younger by living outside US jurisdiction.
-When he was younger, he and his friends held down a gay kid and shaved his head. Drastically opposes gay marriage.
-Used to impersonate a police officer and drive around writing people fake tickets.
-Strapped his dog to the roof of his car when going on vacation, so that his family's luggage could ride inside the car.
-Consistently flip flops on multiple issues.
-Wants to drill for more oil.
-He said "let Detroit go bankrupt."
-Made a promise to repeal Obamacare his first day in office. This means that people like me with life threatening conditions would have to pay for insurance out of pocket and eventually lose our houses because of it.
-Wants to cut funding for education to give millionares more tax breaks.
-Wants to spend a trillion dollars on the military with no plan to pay for it.
-Wants to take away a woman's right to contraception and abortion.
-Wants to turn medicare into a voucher program.
-Wants to keep us in Afghanistan indefinitely.
-Wants to let the religious right into the white house, put religious views into government, and take us back to the 1950s.
-Has lobbyists running his campaign.
-Is a sadistic liar. Will tell any number of lies to win the election, and when confronted about it, claimed to not care about "fact checkers."
...I feel like I'm missing some stuff. Check out the facebook page "one million strong against Mitt Romney in 2012" for more info.
But to me, the choice is clear. And it should be to anyone who knows these facts as well. However, the level of ignorance of a lot of Americans is just appalling.
I believe that I have enough social competence to slip into a party or two, potentially wooing some attractive females that would not mind spending the evening performing the booty dance on me.
I'm voting Obama all the way. We can't afford another republican, and voting for an independent is pretty much wasting your vote, like usual.
How is voting for a third party "wasting your vote"? Wouldn't voting for any candidate be a waste of a vote if you live in a state that is overwhelmingly red or blue? Consider the following:
If I vote for Obama, Obama wins Oregon regardless. He'll get more than enough votes from Portland, Salem, and Eugene to take the state.
If I vote for Romney, Obama still wins Oregon.
If I vote for Johnson, Obama still wins Oregon.
Since Obama will win Oregon no matter who I vote for, I might as well vote for the candidate I agree with most, and that's Gary Johnson.
Obama basically is a Republican, so we get to vote between an Eisenhower Republican and Mitt Romney in November. I'm not really sure why Republicans are upset about this election, they've got a 100% chance of getting one of their own into the Oval Office.
Look, the race boils down to this:
Romney is basically the Republican equivalent of John Kerry. Competent, but boring and forgettable.
Obama campaigned very well in go around one, after making decisions, he's basically proven himself to be in the same vein as Eisenhower Republicans and has huge messaging problems.
This isn't some kind of night/day difference between the two. It's a twilight/evening difference, or morning/sunrise difference. The candidates are separate by a matter of degrees on their own merits. The biggest difference is the people they bring with them. You're not voting for Obama or Romney, you're voting for Ryan/Biden and their respective advisers. Personally, I feel that the Democrats are more competent and stable than the alternatives we have this year.
I'll be voting for Obama, because I prefer his stances on abortion and gay rights to Romney's. Gary Johnson also has some social positions I like, but I think a lot of his positions are half-baked or downright dangerous, such as his pledge to immediately balance the budget by way of drastic cuts in spending.

What if everyone thought that "Obama will win my state regardless"? It may not seem like your vote means much, but collectively, our votes make a difference.
And everyone knows that voting for independents is a waste. They'll never get elected, so why even bother? Did you forget what happened when people voted for Nader? We ended up with 8 years of Bush.

You really should've been paying attention for at least the last year...
I'm a fiscal conservative and social moderate and feel Romney was just "chosen" and didn't leave any other choices.
However, Obama has been a complete fabrication and his policies are basically Jimmy Carter's second term.
I'm old enough to remember 18% interest rates and gas line shortages.
Can we please stop implying that Obama is some sort of super leftist already? He's either a moderate or a conservative in how he legislates depending on who you ask.
To answer the OP's questions: Try the site www.isidewith.com -- you answer questions on various issues and you get matched up with which candidate(s) you are most similar to. You can also see each candidate's answers to all issues.
Yea, he's grown things a bit (although lower than inflation - that was a shocker to me) but overall he's one of the most conservative spending Presidents in recent memory. [Note: Be sure to read the update as well, he's not THE BEST/Second best w/ inflation like the initial article presents if you include TARP under him rather than W (as many critics do), but he's VERY good even with TARP counted in his corner]
I'll be voting for Obama. As Bill Clinton said, what we really need is someone who is willing to cooperate with just about anybody for the greater good, and it is very rare that you find a man willing to do this in the measure that Barack Obama has. This by itself garners a lot of merit from me.
I'm also a pretty big fan of gay people and womens' rights, so there's also that, I suppose.
-Made a promise to repeal Obamacare his first day in office. This means that people like me with life threatening conditions would have to pay for insurance out of pocket and eventually lose our houses because of it.
I've gotten irritated at the flip-flops and critiques without answers of his own that Romney has done, but to be fair that's just overly parsing his words.
He still under what he's been saying recently planning to repeal the entire bill and then reenact some parts.
He didn't lie or flip-flop - but it's a very odd, and inefficient way to do it IMO.
What if everyone thought that "Obama will win my state regardless"? It may not seem like your vote means much, but collectively, our votes make a difference.

Your logic in your first paragraph is exactly why I'm voting independent. It confuses me, how you can write the first paragraph, and then follow it up with the latter. Does any independent stand a chance this election? No. But Libertarians have certainly gained traction over recent years. Besides, I'm not remotely convinced that Romney/Obama are significantly different enough that it'll matter much which of them wins the election.

Because your vote only makes a difference if you vote democrat or republican. And the people who vote independent would usually vote democrat otherwise. So people like that are part of the reason people like Bush are able to get elected.
And did you even read my section about Obama and Romney? The two are polar Opposites. Night and day.
I believe that I have enough social competence to slip into a party or two, potentially wooing some attractive females that would not mind spending the evening performing the booty dance on me.
Under obama the debt has risen 14.9%. in 3 years he has increased the national debt almost 5 trillion dollars.
that is more than what bush increased it in 8. if the CBO and their projections are correct obama is set to add another 10-15 trillion dollars in another 4 years.
the amount of debt he has accumulated in 4 years is more than any other president.
He still under what he's been saying recently planning to repeal the entire bill and then reenact some parts.
that is because some parts are ok. other parts are not.
how is any of this good?
in any event it does need to be repealed and an actual healthcare plan put in place.
the same goes for our tax system it needs replaced with a better smaller system.
the same goes for medicare and medicaid.
And the people who vote independent would usually vote democrat otherwise.
This is not entirely true. people that are independant usually have their mind made up. they tend to swing year from year depending on what is going on.
so far according to all polls together Obama is only 1.8% ahead of Romeny.
but that bump came after the DNC. it is still close. Romney has at least 3 debates and the VP debate to get things together.
He is going to have to knock obama out or he will lose.

Overall i think they are better set to run the country than obama.
Obama's is carter 2.0 the only thing missing is the massive inflation.
Lucky for me I work for a decent company that has good upward mobility.
unemployment still above 8% and the only reason it went down was because almost 400K people quit looking for a job.
the 90K jobs created < than 125K needed to keep pace.
obama has no plan on cutting the budget or the deficit.
we can't take another 4 years of trillion dollar deficits and another 10-20 trillion in projected debt that obama will add.
While i think Romney and Ryan need more details their plan is better than spend more and tax the rich which will accomplish nothing.

Flip-flop Romney is now saying that he LIKES Obamacare-- http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/09/mitt-romney-obamacare-_n_1868385.html. What do republicans see in this guy? He takes different positions on everything, causing him to stand for nothing.

I am talking debt he has wracked up.
Under obama the debt has risen 14.9%. in 3 years he has increased the national debt almost 5 trillion dollars.
that is more than what bush increased it in 8. if the CBO and their projections are correct obama is set to add another 10-15 trillion dollars in another 4 years.
the amount of debt he has accumulated in 4 years is more than any other president.
that is because some parts are ok. other parts are not.
such as this.

how is any of this good?
in any event it does need to be repealed and an actual healthcare plan put in place.
the same goes for our tax system it needs replaced with a better smaller system.
the same goes for medicare and medicaid.
