Character Name: Beryl Liam
Gender: Female
Starter Pokemon: Sandshrew (nicknamed Scout), Male
Age: 14
Height/Weight: 5'3", 125 lb
Place of Origin: Pewter City, Kanto Province
Beryl has a standard nuclear family of a mother, a father, and one sister.
Father: Theo Liam, a respected researcher at the Pewter Museum. Theo has three Pokemon -- the regal Steelix Sheen, his gourmand Onix brother Phagus, and the bossy female Rhydon, Zeal.
Mother: Molly Liam, a shy historian with a passion for Pokemon legends and ancient civilizations.
Older sister: Chloe Liam, an enthusiastic if somewhat airheaded tour guide at the Pewter Museum. She enjoys interacting with people more than studying inanimate things, and collects Poke Dolls.
General Appearance: Athletically built, with short blue-green hair and blue eyes. Her typical outfit is a safari hat, goggles, vest, long pants, gloves, and hiking boots. After becoming a Dragoon and Suicune's Chosen, she has adopted a blue-purple suit of light armor, embellished with swirl patterns.
Backstory: Beryl grew up surrounded by Pokemon and Pokemon researchers, and she was accompanying her father on fossil digs as soon as she was old enough to have a Pokemon of her very own. One day, as her father was proposing an expedition to the continent of Ageos to his colleagues in Slateport, his leg was crushed when a heavy shelf suddenly collapsed. Knowing that Beryl had wanted to embark on a Pokemon journey for a while, he decided to send her in his place.
Goals: To explore the whole world and make discoveries about any fossils in the region. Beryl views Pokemon battles as a natural extension of endurance training. To her, it doesn't matter if a Pokemon has blinding speed, or flashy special attacks - what matters is being the last Pokemon left standing! A lover of Ground- and Rock-types of all stripes, she enjoys hiking, biking, and mountain-climbing alongside her Pokemon.
Travel around Ageos with the other Beasts and Chosen, making memories to last a lifetime. [ ]

Scout was Beryl's first Pokemon, and her closest childhood friend aside from her sister. The Sandshrew would accompany her father and her to archaeological digs, and keep her company when her father was gone on long trips to other regions. More than any other member of Beryl's party, Scout prides himself on never showing weakness, and being more valuable to her than her other Pokemon. He is stubborn, has an intense dislike of wet places, and is the most likely to disobey a direct order, but when times are tough he's a loyal friend to the end. When Beryl was battling Crimson City's Gym Leader, Scout evolved into Sandslash in a burst of immense willpower, taking down Alexander's final Pokemon and winning Beryl the Jasper Badge. Through many roster changes, Scout remains Beryl's strongest Pokemon and her constant companion.
Mystic was a Dratini from the northeast side of Twilight Isle. Beryl captured the rare Dragon-type to further her understanding of the island's mysteries. Mystic is generally friendly and playful, though his inquisitiveness makes him a troublemaker at times. He is oddly unafraid of humans, unlike most members of the shy and reclusive dragonkind, and could not remember having ever seen a Dragon-type before. Beryl trekked to Celeste City to avoid the path of the legendary serpents. Once there, the truth came out: Mystic had been stolen from the Dragoons while still an egg, and the Dragonair that Beryl faced during the Dragoon Trial was actually his mother! This sudden understanding instilled Mystic with a burst of energy that enabled Beryl to win the challenge. As a sign of her bond with her Dragoon Partner, the Dragon Fang serving as an emblem of her victory hangs on a ribbon around Mystic's neck. Their bond only strengthened when Mystic evolved during Beryl's gym battle at Harlequin City, gaining the ability to fly in the process, and when he reached his final form during flight training lessons at the Laurel City Gym. Beryl carries a Dragonite Poke Doll at all times for Mystic to remember his family by.
Trooper was an adolescent Growlithe Beryl caught in the Safari Zone. His diligence, persistence, and odor sleuthing abilities have been invaluable to Beryl anytime she needs to track someone down. Trooper responds well to kind words and offerings of bait. In battle, however, he's hot-blooded and easily angered, which only fuels his determination to win. He evolved when Beryl used a Fire Stone at the Laurel Racing Track, on her quest to seek additional funding for Wendell's initiative. Since evolving, he's grown more confident, though he's still aloof around strangers. Beryl was initially impatient when learning to ride Trooper, but she's since developed a greater understanding of his particular capabilities, calling on his aid when a need for speed is greatest.
Rumble was a Barboach fished up at a dock in Laurel City, and seeing that she was a Ground-type, Beryl couldn't resist. Rumble has an extremely aggressive personality in battle, always rushing in boldly and headfirst, and enjoys taunting her opponents -- and her teammates. True to her nature as a Whiscash, she's very territorial over what she regards as her "personal space." She evolved during a fierce battle with a wild Stantler just outside Harlequin City.
Tundra was a Swinub from the Hallelujah Plateau. As a Ground-type naturally adapted to the icy environment, he has been a helpful and industrious addition to Beryl's team. He's especially good friends with Cheeri, using his nose to sniff out delicious food buried in the snow. He evolved during a training session after Beryl's fifth gym battle, and again during the lowest point of Beryl's battle with Gym Leader Michael.
Highwind is Beryl's newest Pokemon, an eight-foot-high Aerodactyl resurrected from Old Amber found in the Slate City Mines. He was once a top predator in the prehistoric era of Ageos, and doesn't let anyone forget it. Manners are a completely foreign concept to him, which makes him uncomfortable in more "civilized" settings. In battle, he mixes his considerable strength and speed with cunning, looking for opportunities to trick the foe into exposing its weak point.
These Pokemon live at home with Beryl's family, functionally the same as the PC:
Hardy was a Diglett living in the Southern Badlands until extensive archaeological digging in the region weakened the foundation of his home. He chased Scout out of a tunnel the Sandshrew dug into by accident, and was subsequently caught by Beryl. He no longer wishes to stay in his old home, where he would miss out on all kinds of experiences. Hardy is a wise and matured Dugtrio with a strong connection to the Earth (literally), who wishes that humans and Pokemon could be better stewards of their natural environment. He evolved after a particularly rigorous burst of training at the Crimson City Gym.
Cheeri was the first Pokemon Beryl "caught," in a manner of speaking. Beryl and Scout encountered him in Emerald Forest, and persuaded the Teddiursa to come along on their adventure. Cheeri is generous and compassionate, and gets along with virtually everyone. Cheeri wants everyone else to get along with everyone, too, and is the most upset by party infighting. Cheeri believes in being a good sport, whether he wins or loses a battle. His favorite food is honey, but he's a true gourmand and will eat just about everything. Cheeri evolved into Ursaring after Beryl passed her Dragoon Trial. He sparred with Beryl nightly to build up her own skills in physical fighting, preparing her for monumental battles against the Serpents.
Slick was a wild Wooper encountered on the beachfront of Route 9. He's playful and laid-back, preferring to go with the flow rather than make waves. He lacks ambition - some could call him lazy - but even so, he's mentally agile and adaptable, and works well with Beryl to improvise new solutions to situations. Before evolving during a Trainer battle on the shores of Avalon Bay, Slick could use his Water Gun as a means of propelling himself into the air, which Beryl calls the Water Launch. His trademark battle cry was "Woop woop!"
Sayuri originated from a Root Fossil buried in a Rocket-made trap in the Slate City Mines. Beryl brought her to the lab in Crimson City, where the baby Lileep was resurrected. Sayuri is rather shy, but she's slowly gaining more and more confidence. She enjoys getting pampered by her owner, due to having spent her earliest days in a Pokemon Daycare. She loves being on and around the ocean. She evolved in a training battle near the El Ectri City Gym.
Lagoon is a Lapras from the southwest side of Twilight Isle. She's generally placid, like her namesake, through she gets feverishly agitated by bright lights. This caused her to become separated from her pod when they swam close to Twilight City, and she stayed around the island's far side until Beryl's Sayuri managed to subdue her with a confuse ray. At Sayuri's behest, Beryl captured the rare, ancient Pokemon. Lagoon enjoys creating beauty around her more than she cares for battling. Although she's weaker than many of Beryl's Pokemon, Lagoon's combination of debilitating moves and direct attacks still makes her a fearsome opponent in normal Trainer battles.
Pokey is a young Cacnea Beryl had a run-in with in the desert when she was trying to escape the pyramid. The overexcitable Pokemon tried to "hug" her, and Beryl instinctively hurled a Great Ball at her. Pokey loves being around Beryl's other Pokemon at home, whom she considers all her friends, and is very often the "life of the party."
As the Chosen of Suicune and Knight of Winds, Beryl wields a variety of wind-based powers able to both heal and harm. She channels these powers through the upgrade to her Dragoon Spear, the Crystal Lance. The lance is blue-purple in color and extremely lightweight, with a spearpoint resembling the crystal on Suicune's forehead. Beryl wears a matching set of light armor embellished with swirls resembling the wind and waves.

Dennis, tosses out his only Pokemon, a Rattata. "Let's go, Rattata! Start with a quick attack!" The little pokemon let out a squeak as it took of in a dead-on charge at the Sandshrew.
The Rattata's attack bounced off the curled hide of Scout, but on the shout of "Again!" from its trainer the little mousy pokemon proved it had agility as it spun a 180 after landing ont he ground again and continued the assault. (quick attack)
The Sandshrew remains curled up as the Rattata's attack hits his hide again, but this time, as the Rattata bounces off, Beryl yells, "Now, Scout! Use your Scratch attack!"
Scout rapidly uncurls and attempts to scratch the Rattata in its backside before it can get turned around again.
Scout's scratch attack raked the underside of the Rattata, causing it to spin wildly for a second. As the mouse pokemon reoriented itself, it started to twitch its tail back and forth. "Use your tail whip on it, make it dizzy!" The Rattata streaked in on its trainer's command, and tried to spin the Sandshrew like a somewhat large, unwieldly top.
Scout is unable to use another defense curl in time and, like the Rattata was a moment before, spins in a circle on his legs and tail. However, in an attempt to balance himself, he flings his arms out to his sides. They flail and scratch wildly in the general direction of the Rattata.
"One more time, Rattata! Quickly dodge the scratches and hit it with everything you have!" The Rattata squeaked its understanding and raced toward the Sandshrew again. While it wasn't able to avoid the scratches completely, it did maneuver in close and attempt to knock Scout out of its rotation with the force of its charge. (Quick attack)
Scout spins and rolls and topples a short distance away, then slowly gets back on his feet.
"Stand your ground, Scout! Defense Curl again!"
Scout, having had his defenses momentarily lowered by the dizzying tail whip, stubbornly curls up into a ball again. If he's winded from the force of the Rattata's repeated blows, he does a pretty good job of not showing it.
"I think we have it cornered, one last tackle, Rattata!" The mouse pokemon was clearly stating to show some signs of exhaustion, but it gathered enough energy to a final speeding dash toward the Sandshrew that was curling up tight.
"Scout, this is it! Wait until the right moment, then give it all you've got!"
The Rattata's footfalls thump the grass as it propels itself forward. When it sounds close enough that neither Pokemon can dodge the ensuing melee, Scout uncurls around to face the Rattata and winds his arm back to deliver a final, full-power Scratch attack.
The scratch attack lands true, and Rattata is sent tumbling one final time. Dennis frowns at his pokemon's fate, but returns it to a pokeball witha smile on his face. "Wow, you're pretty good. That was a fun battle, and I owe you this," he says has he hands over $80.
Congratulations, you have defeated Youngster Dennis!
The taunting sends the normally mild-mannered Cheeri into a rage. "Tedd! Teddiur!" it bellows at the Chimchar, as it rushes in to scratch the foe with its claws.
Cheeri cries out in pain as the flying embers burn his left paws. Hobbled, he still attempts to charge the Chimchar and scratch it again, but the nimble monkey Pokemon easily dodges out of the way.
Cheeri's in trouble. "Return!" Beryl calls out. "Scout, you're up. Let's try to smother these fires with your Sand-Attack!"
Scout bounds forward on on all fours until he reaches the edge of the ring of embers. Then he digs into the ground and flings sprays of dust and sand in the Chimchar's general direction.
"Scout, don't fall for it! He's just trying to confuse you!" Beryl calls out.
Scout hears his trainer and, for whatever reason, seems less agitated by the taunt than Cheeri. He looks around and can't see the Chimchar as clearly due to the lingering haze of dust in the air. Scout closes his eyes and tries to shake off the effects of the taunt.
"Remember your training," Beryl says. "The key to winning any battle isn't to be the strongest or the fastest, it's to have a rock hard defense. As long as you can weather any attack the opponent throws at you, it doesn't matter how long you wait before attacking! Now Scout! Use Defense Curl!"
Scout's curled-up hide receives a few scorch marks from the spray of embers.
"Use Sand-Attack again," Beryl says. "Then, while it can't see you, Scratch it!"
Scout uncurls before the Chimchar can release another Ember spray and tosses a clod of sand directly at the Chimchar's face. He rushes up directly behind, claws outstretched.
The combination of attacks works in Scout's favor, and Chimchar is knocked into the dirt. It seems to be having trouble standing up again, but that doesn't stop it from leering at the Sandshrew. (hp red)

Beryl challenges Youngster Dennis to a battle and indicates Scout as the Pokemon she will use.

Dennis, tosses out his only Pokemon, a Rattata. "Let's go, Rattata! Start with a quick attack!" The little pokemon let out a squeak as it took of in a dead-on charge at the Sandshrew.
The Sandshrew stands stock still until the Rattata is in close, then quickly tucks its head, arms, and legs into a tight Defense Curl.

Scout rapidly uncurls and attempts to scratch the Rattata in its backside before it can get turned around again.

"Scout, snap out of it!" Beryl commands.
"Teddi!" the Teddiursa cheers from the sidelines.

"Stand your ground, Scout! Defense Curl again!"
Scout, having had his defenses momentarily lowered by the dizzying tail whip, stubbornly curls up into a ball again. If he's winded from the force of the Rattata's repeated blows, he does a pretty good job of not showing it.

The Rattata's footfalls thump the grass as it propels itself forward. When it sounds close enough that neither Pokemon can dodge the ensuing melee, Scout uncurls around to face the Rattata and winds his arm back to deliver a final, full-power Scratch attack.

Congratulations, you have defeated Youngster Dennis!
"All right guys! Time for a real battle to put our practice to good use!"
Beryl orders Cheeri to start off with a Leer attack and see how the Chimchar reacts.

The taunting sends the normally mild-mannered Cheeri into a rage. "Tedd! Teddiur!" it bellows at the Chimchar, as it rushes in to scratch the foe with its claws.

"Use Sand-Attack again," Beryl says. "Then, while it can't see you, Scratch it!"
Scout uncurls before the Chimchar can release another Ember spray and tosses a clod of sand directly at the Chimchar's face. He rushes up directly behind, claws outstretched.

"Knock it out, Scout. One last Scratch attack."
Scout looks a little intimidated by the leer, but still manages to swat the Chimchar on the side of the head.
