Obstacle 1:Uphill and straight as an arrow for the first few hundred yards, the dirt track takes a sudden turn at the crest of the hill, a sharp 90 degrees to the right. The lateral angle of the turn as well as the dip in terrain where the turn begins can make it difficult to judge. Generous track width lessens the penalty of a mistake, but taking the long way around the turn can cause runners to lose time and position easily.
"Go!" Once the green flag went down, all eleven Pokémon burst across the line, trying to get up to speed on the long, gently-uphill straightaway. Albert and Karen raced right next to each other all the way toward the crest of the hill, everyone else falling behind. When the two saw the sudden, semi-blind right turn, they both pulled hard for their mounts to turn right. Unable to slow down enough, Albert's Ponyta slid off the wide track and onto the surrounding grass. Karen's wasn't so lucky. The other racer having trouble with the curve nudged her and her fire-type, the girl having no choice but to jump off and tumble downward with her Pokémon. They watched helplessly, the entire field whizzing by as the two stood up, got back on the track, and followed them.
After the first curve, Josh saw a Persian and rider round the first curve with impressive agility. What an interesting choice to race on...you'd think Persian wears itself out too easily for something like this. They're not big, either. He heard a cry from the Dodrio just in front of him as it was running to the outside of the stretch just before the turn.
"Quick Attack!" he heard the rider shout.
With that, the Dodrio rushed through the apex of the turn, passing the Persian in a blast of speed. At least three lengths separated the two. So fast! Man, this is a lot harder than it looks. How can she handle it? he asked himself as he leaned into the turn, passing a few of his competitors as Saber ran over the hill's crest.

Obstacle 2: After the hill crests, the track dips to around its original altitude, followed by a straightaway laid into a bumpy, rolling landscape. Keeping balance is a test of dexterity for both the Pokémon and the rider. Toward the end of the rolling, almost mogul-like terrain, gentle curves pepper the track, making it even more difficult for riders to pass through it without losing ground.
Josh grunted as soon as Saber hit the haphazardly and densely placed hills. He felt as if he slammed down on Saber's back at every trough and floated above him at every crest. Racing was definitely a lot tougher than the pros made it look--and this was considered an easy track. "Ahh!" he cried as the electric-type slid downhill into a turn. Ella and her bear Pokémon weren't so lucky, not able to handle the terrain well at all. "Saber, see if we can pass the Ursaring when you find level ground!"
"Quick Attack!" Josh heard two voices farther up the track, around two seconds ahead of him. Are they nuts?! The golden-furred pair's strides became more rapid and lengthier, hitting exclusively the crests of the rolling surface. Terri and Norman smiled as their Ninetales broke away from the trailing half of the pack, making a run at the top three once the track flattened out again.
The two Ponyta riders were frustrated at how far behind they were. Intending to make a run at the Lairon in front of him, Albert didn't slow down a bit. Once the curves came, the boy almost went flying from his Pokémon as it tripped on one of the sharper hills. He held on tight as it was barely able to recover its balance. The two fire-maned Pokémon were almost a full three seconds behind the ninth-place Tony and Lairon.

A mere ten days after the Mending, a young knight of Valeron and a young ranger of Eos made a discovery that would change Alara forever.
Obstacle 3: The track finally flattens out, and segues into a long, but gentle, 180-degree uphill curve to the right, ending at its highest point. Holding the curve for that long without rubbing the rock walls and losing speed can prove to be difficult, and hugging the inside is especially challenging.

Obstacle 4: After the peak of the long curve is the beginning of a long, straight descent in the direction of the bay. The great view of the beach can be breathtaking, but racers have to block it out, keeping all their focus on maintaining as much speed as possible coming off the large but shallow hill.

Josh heard all kinds of Quick Attack cries ahead of him as Saber accelerated down the hill. About a third of the way down, he could feel his heart pounding in fear, and gently tugged back on his Pokémon. "Ugh, I'm starting to feel dizzy..." Not understanding why, but obeying the order, Saber leveled his speed, even slowing down a bit to compensate for running downhill. He was able to keep his relative position, but lost absolute position, hearing hooves and paws trampling the ground.
Helen relaxed when her Dodrio seemingly coast down the hill, confident they were far enough ahead to relieve some tension. "Go for it, Ninetales!" Terri cried as her Ninetales burst down the right side of the track, its stride faster than the eye could see. The two were neck and neck all the way until the end of the hill, both of them heading for the left side of the dirt road that transitioned into beach at the bottom of the hill. Cathy and Norman were neck and neck as well, though around three seconds behind the leaders.
"Agility!" Albert commanded. With a burst of energy, the Ponyta weaved in and out, its strides too faster than the untrained eye could see. Its flaming mane burst so high that the rider couldn't see a thing. All he could see was the grass on the sides of the hill flying by dizzyingly fast. Once the flames died back down to normal levels again, he saw Tony and Lairon a mere quarter of a second ahead. They had made up a lot of ground, but he could also hear the fire-type's breath getting heavy, embers flying from its nostrils.

Obstacle 5: At the bottom of the big hill is the track's namesake--a sharp, 180-degree hairpin turn. Furthermore, the turn is narrow and on a sandy beach, making it very easy to slide into the outer walls. Easily the most threatening Obstacle on the track, this final turn has claimed many a racer's run.
Obstacle 6: After the crazy, sand-laden turn, the finish line is in sight, around a kilometer down the dirt road. No turns, no obstructions--just an all-out drag race to the checkered flag.

As soon as the racers came off the sandy turn and back onto the dirt track, all the Pokémon sprinted for the finish line, now in sight about a kilometer out. Well, all except Saber. Josh tugged gently on his electric-type as soon as he started feeling dizzy again. He weaved in and out as Saber instinctively responded to what he interpreted as commands to turn, when they were really Josh leaning left and right to try to keep his balance in his dizziness.
Helen and Dodrio blew everyone else out of the race, finishing ahead of Terri and her Ninetales by a full four seconds. The rest of the competition crossed the line in groups: Norman and Cathy followed Terri within a second or two; Alicia crossed on her own three seconds later. Josh led the next group four seconds behind, Bryan and Ella trailing him slightly, then the others finished quite a ways behind.
Josh fell from Saber's back, completely out of breath as his vision seemed to spin in circles.
